Increase taxes and what will happen? Spending will increase. Maybe not on year one or two, but soon. The only solution is a smaller federal government, and this is what the tea party espouses. Politicians and corporations want more and more federal spending - that's what the tea party is fighting against.

Lowering spending on it's own is just a band aid and doesn't fix the revenue shortage and Just increasing taxes doesn't fix the spending problem. Government should do both all the time, every time otherwise they should be thrown out. You can't fix a budget problem by only concentrating on one side. Just isn't possible.

I don't think you want to see what would happen if that happens. What we need is a balanced budget with budget surpluses for the next 10-15 years. The problem is that congress and senate change 3-4 times in that same period and depending who is in power(Rep or Dem) they both don't have sense to do both.

@NoogLeader You don't seem to understand what a spending freeze is. The federal budget for 2011 is $3.8 trillion. A ten year spending freeze would mean the budget stays at $3.8 trillion for the next ten years. That's plenty of money. Normally the federal govt uses a baseline with a yearly increase of 5% (based on the estimated average increase in GDP) - so the budget would automatically increase by at least 5%. In 2011 we added an almost $1 trillion stimulus (supposedly a one-time stimulus).

You do realize that the debt is added not only by congressional spending. That part of that is money that people paid in that is owed back to them. If the government cuts Social Security and Medicare that the government would and rightfully should pay the money paid in back at least. That would cut the government fiscal budget by half easy.

@megagagnon1 You do realize part of the reason that the debt is so high is because of the concepts of quantitative easing(printing more money endlessly). If you devalue a currency the dollar amount of the debt necessarily increases as it takes more money to pay off past debts. You can't plug a hole(endless money creation) by sticking your finger in it(cutting spending or increasing taxes) but reducing debt can still be achieved by doing both. You also have to stop the Fed making more money.
