  • this melody makes me cry at times.

  • i've been playing this piece for a while now... and it's nowhere near as good as this. BEAUTIFUL

  • Eine der besten Varianten, wunderbar gespielt. Ich könnte sie mir ununterbrochen anhören.

  • those harmonics are amazing.

  • this is absolutely beautiful

  • I heard this on the classical music station KUSC while driving to the supermarket. I stayed in the car and didn't get out until it was over. So beautiful!

  • @afarfaglia Isn't that worthwhile? How to stop listening to it?

  • Comment removed

  • something definitely lacking here for me. of course it's beautiful and amazing but I no doubt prefer Aaron Rosand's interpretation.

  • thank God this is only audio, otherwise something would definitely stop me from say "I love his interpretation" !!

  • ВОСХИТИТЕЛЬНО!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i think this sounds like a real "zigeuner" would play it :)

    so spirited..

  • One of my all time favorite violin pieces and played by Joshua Bell is simply magnificent. Words can't describe how beautiful it is, especially played by him.

  • Hmmm nice but i think Gil Shaham's version is better.

  • Anne Sophie Mutter's version totally owns all other versions. Period

  • @tristan01101 Then you've only heard this and Anne-Sophie's recording. Or you don't play violin. Listen to Perlman's, Heifetz's, or Rabin's.

  • @Jctankk Umm.. ._. Nope, I've been playing for almost ten years. Anne-Sophie's is better. Perlman's interpretation is hard, rough, gritty, and that goes for most of what he plays. Heifetz's is alright- but he plays through certain key phrases too quickly, whereas Anne Sophie puts a kind of sweet-ish/vigorous emphasis on them. Michael Rabin's is the only one out of those you mentioned that marginally compares to her. But you're welcome to think differently... I just like ASM's much better.

  • @tristan01101 u think perlmans is hard rough & gritty? LOL u srs? wow....-.-

  • @lilrascal1999 A little more than normal, yeah. Not ALL THE TIME, but what I've heard was a little more rough than what I like. Plus I've heard that his recordings are edited a lot for errors. That could be false though.

  • los sonidos celestiales del violín oidos aquí en la tierra.jaime rojas

  • i am a guitarrist, acoustic and electric and i don't know the violin's technic but i have been listening to the music as far as i can. I tell you, this sounds great for me and i never met the player in person, but the sound is awesome and sometimes i could say "bluesy" if i can be a little bit bold. Great music, great violinist and thanks for posting. Keep up the good job. See u.

  • Does he know this piece is not a lullaby?

  • @asymp2 interesting comment.... Yes, I understand you. Romanie.

  • @ Zander Haters ...

I actually somewhat do agree with Zander. His music does seem to lack a bit of "oomph." And I'm a fairly good violinist and have played the song (so I do know what I'm talking about).

But him, like so many others just seem to be unable to play the left-handed pizzicato.

  • One of the most great piece of music in the world. I love this for ever. Joshua Bell´s interpretation is simply perfect. Thaks.

  • Joshua Bell's version of this sounds more dainty...

  • Anne Sophie Mutter's is my best Zigeunerweisen. Her's is more intense. Though Joshua Bell's sounds more feminine, I think it's nice. Softer sound. It may be reflecting his personality?

  • @PythagoreanX

I am not a Bell's fan, so i can tell a clear opinion.

Bell's is more musical, and when you say "feminine", i would say "zigeuner". gipsy music is made of charm and seduction

And sorry for her, but Mutter's is technic, and with a not-so-good musical sense.

  • @Mantikd Are you joking? Can you not feel her passion in her play? She is technically great apparently, but she is more than that.

  • @PythagoreanX

Yes, i can feel her passion, i do not say she feels nothing..

You probably did hear Mutter in Beethoven. Shes plays Beethoven like Brahms, like Wienawky, like...Sarasate, with a great sound of great intensity and a lot of vibrato. But that is not what makes music, in my mind. Hear the beginning of the concerto, when she plays the scales, and compare to Perlman (who plays with more fineness).

  • @PythagoreanX

Or compare even to Bell himself (always in Beethoven), who plays like..in a improvization (=like music?). I find Mutter a little coarse in her interpretation(s). But she plays with a fascinating sound what makes her charm, thats sure, and what saves her, maybe.

  • joshua bell has the best sound I ever heard. This lightness and tactfulness is brilliant.

  • He is my favorite out of the others. Nobody can match his technical mastery in presentation, and his passionate playing. He is the Jacqueline Du Pre of the violin. I am literally in tears when I heard his playing.... so sweet, so powerful and full of emotion and beauty.

  • he kinda messed up the left hand pluckin bit

  • Trust you? But this is the internet. Let's see...you graduated from the Moscow conservatory...Oooo....In that case, I'm the Queen of England. 'Trust me.'

They don't make video cameras where you come from? If you play as good or better than Bell...then show us. Or shut up.

Don't reply to this, becasue until you can come up with proof of your ability and can also prove it's you playing, then I don't see the need to bother. If you are good, I'll apologize. But I'm not holding my breath.

  • Comment removed

  • Like I always say, Zander, go do it better and then you can talk...otherwise, shut up.

  • Comment removed

  • joshua bell is a joke who loves himself. all he does is put a production on stage to give the illusion that he's "feeling" the music but all he's really feeling is the check they give him afterwords. if you close your eyes you dont feel anything. listen to gil shaham and anne sophie mutter and of course all the masters of the 20th century.

  • @zander09401 youre jealous!

  • Hey Zander, while I'm not a Joshua Bell fan I couldn't disagree more on your assessment. Josh is IMO a terrific violinist. He couldn't have made it as far as he has were it otherwise. Truthfully I don't enjoy ALL of his playing ALL the time, but still think he's a marvelous violinist.

BTW I enjoyed his interpretation of Ziguenerweisen but Rabin is still my favorite in this piece.

  • He's dying in the screen picture

  • Don't be silly!

He's just full of emotion during his performances. (^_^)

  • i love this way to play very nice =)

  • I love his rendition. It sounds so fluidic to me.

  • that comment would basically say there is no room for new talent.

  • others might be better but you need not insult joshua, music interpretation is subjective

  • i love his interpretation of this piece. (:

  • Joshua is clearly lacking in any comparison with Rabin.......

  • impressive speed!

I love this rendition just as much as I love Rabin's

  • I liked it too, But not quite that much. rabin's rendition is pretty far up the scale.

  • i know i am nothing to say everything about Joshua Bell, but i think he put too much technique , and just no much feeling...but it sounds very good, this is very dificult to play

    (sorry the bad english)

  • are you f*cking insane? not much feeling? then show how it has to be played!

  • A little bit more strength would make it perfect in my opinion.

  • I think all of you are wrong about this recording. It was perfect, intonation was perfect and technique, very lyrical and romantic, unlike the version of Sarah Chang, who very talented has bite to her's, so it is way more showy, and some of the high notes we sharp and not in tune with Sarah, so I think that Joshua is a more mature player, even though he may not take it as fast as she does, each player is different and has their playing traits they are know for.

  • It`s not a speed problem, Dansback. I personally don`t like Sarah's version, I think it is a bit scratchy. In my case, I only say that this version of Gypsy airs aka "Aires gitanos" is not in the top five recording. Anyway he did a very very good job here.

  • I dont think Bell are in the top five Zigeunerweisen recording. I think he has technical weaknesses, and no mature. He will be a good player with time.

  • The dude is past his prime.

  • Hopfensperger.....blah blah blah...I heard Oscar Shumsky playing with the Emerson SQ live, not long before he died. Old guy. He sounded as good or better than he ever did. There are many players that play well into their later years at top notch capbility, so knock it off.

  • that is if he had one

  • jeez...what an idiotic thing to say. I have performed with him MANY times, as well as Sarah Chang, Hilary Hahn, Perlman, etc..Joshua Bell brings something the performance that not many people can bring. He might have some issues technically from his long neck and arms, but generally speaking, there is a GOOD reason that he sells out SIX months before his concerts AROUND THE WORLD. So, look, you guys can sit here and bash him all you want, but I know from experience that he is the real deal.

  • Right on. Only a fool would diss Bell.

  • By the way, you spell it i-g-n-o-r-a-n-t. Or, wait, maybe it's...z-a-n-d-e-r...It's ignorant either way.

  • Joshua Bell has such passion for the music. He finds a way to make the violin actually sound like it cries. He has such superb technique and passion...it makes me tear up every time I hear him play this piece...

  • Splendide interprétation ! Sans aucun doute une des meilleures qu'il m'ait été donné d'entendre (avec celle de Perlman) !

  • Comment removed

  • Very wek rendition. Listen to Szeryng, Kogan, Oistrakh or Rabin instead!

  • Right, bubblyviolin11, this is THE real strength in Bell´s playing-his flow of emotion really makes the music live and touch our hearts. In live events he sometimes shows some disturbing technical weaknesses, but I have not found out why in the world this weird JoshBellKills-guy has such hatred for him-actually I think he is bored and plays games with the unfortunate kisaiscute. I like the "romantic" musicianship of Bell a lot more than a dry, ever well-studied burocratic way as often heard...

  • I don't understand it too. but a couple of monthes ago we had a very similer argument about Anne-Sophie Mutter, who ever he is I'm glad his account is closed perhaps people can finally enjoy the music...

  • i like joshua alot. i feel that he lacks in the mature aspect of the music though. i have the same teacher as mimi zweig so i know alot about him. i feel that anne sophie mutters version of these is most likely one of the best ive ever encountered. you guys should take a look at it.

  • u guys r such fricken weirdos. gee just appreciate the music and stop making up bullshit!!!

  • I agreed with bubbyviolin. ive watched all version available on youtube, this is one of the best. such passion he has!

    btw jbk ur mental

stop paying attention to this guy

  • JoshBellKills u are messed up and need to go to a mental instutue! He plays music that has such passion i think you are jealous of his skills because u dont have them.... i also think that u are a cocky son of a b*$#@ and u have no class or taste so just stop being so heartless

  • out of all the renditions of this piece that i have heard, bell's is probably the most unique simply because he plays with such passion and love. passion that one can truly hear. as for u, joshbellkills, u need to get a life. and what is up with all of this dramatic language? if u don't like joshua bell, than don't bother to listen him. ur just jealous.

  • 1. then why the heck is your username Iheartjoshuabell...?

    2. Omg. Open my eyes!??!?!?! Everything in our world is devised by stupid people like you nowadays!!!! Sides on a topic are devised by opinion!!!! whether somthing is good or not, the prices put on supplies, AND OPINIONS ON HOW WELL PEOPLE PLAY! I think you are the one in the dark. At least I don't crtisize you for hating joshua bell. Just stop lecturing people who are! and don't give e any of this "bell's darknesS" crap.

  • kisaiscute, my username is a euphemism for "I hate Joshua Bell's performances more than anyone else's".

And you did criticise me for hating Joshua Bell: you called me a 'meanie', a 'meaniebutt', and a 'meaniebananabutt'.

Bell's darkness is very real, and it is Bell's darkness which made you say "stop lecturing people" to me. For your own education, and protection, I will ignore that.

kisaiscute, PLEASE, I BEG you: open your eyes to the musical freak show Bell produces on his violin!

    IHJB xxx

  • omg, you sure do LOVE sugarcoating your words. Heck, I can't even believe you like don't even know what euphimism means! GET A DICTIONARY AND SEARCH IT UP SO YOU WON'T USE IT WRONG AGAIN! and how was I to know that you were the same guy as ViciosCallousness!??!?!? hauh?!?!??! If there's anything I hate about bell, it's his hair==;; (it looks like my despicable brother's...lol) and omg. you are weird. How would you know that you're not the one in the darkness!??!?!

  • My dear, I know exactly what a euphemism is, the problem is that you don't appear to have a sense of humour.

As for "sugarcoating": well, this is how I always speak. I'm sorry if my PhD-level education makes me sound pretentious, I can't help it. I'm not going to apologise for it.

I know I'm not in the dark because I am able to hear; that is the only skill required to form the correct judgement on Bell's ridiculous fiddling.

Talking of Bell, he couldn't earn five quid playing in a subway.

  • I never asked you to apologize for it. I enjoy yor stubborn spirit(which I also have) but I'm not back down to it. "I'm sorry if my PhD-level education makes me sound pretentious, I can't help it." oh yeah, by the way youalready did apologize. Look for the words "I'm sorry" in that sentence. Don't worry you'll find it somewhere ;D. And yeah, bell won't earn that much in a subway, he'll earn that times 50 in a concert hall. Sense of humor? HA! Excuse me, but you're the killer of humor.

  • "oh yeah, by the way youalready did apologize."

So I did! It seems I don't pay much attention to my own YouTube comments.

Carelessness aside, Bell's preposterous shenanigans are risible. What is there to like about this man's performances? His bowing is stiff and uncoordinated, if you want a real laugh go and watch the Tzigane video. Unbelievably funny!

The fact that he plays in a concert hall only tells us that he has lots of delusional fans. People pay money for old rubbish all the time.

  • ==;;

He plays a heck lot better than me. You dont' have any freaking ears!!! omg. safety!??! what am I gonna do!?/!/ die from hearing this!?!?!?!

  • Yes! You will die from listening to Bell, that is a statistical certainty. I myself developed a vaccine which enables me to listen to Bell safely. Bell has his own graveyard where he buries his fans. It's a terrible place, I nearly went there myself. It was only the persistent warnings of my master which saved me.

Now I am the master, and I am warning you, kisaiscute! Stay away from the Bell; he rings in illusions of happiness followed by certain death.

  • don't lie. GET REAL. There are no such statistics. I'M NOT FREAKING DEAD AND I LISTEN TO THIS GUY EVERYDAY CAUSE YOU ALWAYS COMMENT ON THIS VIDEO.

  • kisaiscute, the only reason I keep commenting on this video is because you refuse to wake up and smell the bacon. Bell's violin antics are endangering not only your life, but your loved ones' happiness; what will your family do when Bell's evil spells finally take their deadly toll? I am appealing to the diminishing part of you which can see Bell for who is: an insult to all classical-music lovers.

I am trying to mass-produce my Bell vaccine so I can get a plane and spray it everywhere.

  • Wait, JoshBellKills, how does music from a violin kill you? I've seen in some fantasy stories, but...In the real world? Seems a bit unreal ._.

  • "and omg. you are weird. "

Oh no, please don't call me weird, I've got a real complex about that. Every time someone calls me weird it brings back so many painful memories of all the other Bell fans who called me that and who wouldn't leave the Bell cult. I've lost a lot of Bell fans to his dark magic, please don't be the next one!

Bell's burlesque interpretations are fit only for the cruellest mockery.

  • STOP. COMPLAINING. THEN DON'T HEAR HIM PLAY! Let others hear him play because they have more different thoughts when they hear him. And you don't have the decision to decide whether I like Bell or not. Fortunately, you're not god. You have no control over me whatsoever.

  • "THEN DON'T HEAR HIM PLAY! "

My dear, I don't want to hear him play. I only want YOU to stop listening to him too. In your anger with me you are losing sight of the fact that I care deeply for you and other Bell fans. I will take you by the hand and lead you to safety, if only you'll let me.

Joshua Bell's unrelenting slaughter of composers' masterpieces is an afront to all civilised people, not to mention an insult to the composers. They turn in their graves as he plays, I hear them.

  • (fine! I'll fight good english with awesome english!)

Rather, I think that the composers would be "composed"(haha) in their deathbeds. I shall commit suicide delightedly rather than be guided out by your flthy hand of lies.

  • Filthy lies! I know not of that which you speak! Every word out of my mouth is like cool water for a parched throat on a dry summer's day. My warnings are like a lighthouse for ships on a stormy sea. My compassion is infinitely deep, and my wisdom knows no bounds.

In short, kisaiscute, I am your saviour, calling out to you in loving desperation. Why do you insist on pushing me away?

I now know how Jesus felt as he lovingly warned of the dangers of Hell, only to be laughed at and ignored.

  • don't compare yourself to him. He is wAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than you. lols. Your wisdom? You 're a pea-brained idiot with no ears.

  • Excuse me! That is so rude. I have done nothing but point out Bell's atrocious crimes against music to you, and STILL you do not thank me. Indeed, you are not only ungrateful, you are rude and abusive.

Perhaps you think that by insulting me you are wearing me down. Nothing is further from the truth: I am with you to the bitter end, kisaiscute. Your master knows that behind your hositle exterior lies a vulnerable little girl who has been taken captive by Bell's malevolent sorcery.

    JBK xxx

  • Just out of curiosity, when did art appreciation class become VIOLENT DEBATE TEAM WITHOUT JUDGES?

JoshBellKills, i see no point in your endless self-praise, and kisaiscute, your insults have not found their proper target. As the only mediator, I find nothing better to say than CEASE TO COMMENT!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I played Zigeunerweisen before

    it's really funny and excited!

  • Dude, this guy has skills that kills. :D LOL.

  • Yes you are quite correct. Bell tortures to death and then mutilates every work he elects to apply himself to. This was god-awful.

  • lol. is that a compliment or an insult? waiit, ok considering form your last sentence...it's an insult?!!! YAHOO WHOO HOO I FIGURED IT OUT! ANYWAYS! well, I don't see the reason to insult him if you can't do any better. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all! You know, Bell is putting all that work into playing the violin, I'm sure anybody in youtube would agree with that(maybe not you) but I don't see any reason why you should abase his playing. 1 word. MEANIE!!

  • kisaiscute, I literally cannot understand your love for Bell's remorceless culling of every composition he elects to try and play.

I do not have to be able to play the violin better than Bell to be able to determine that his musicianship is little better than that of a rank amateur. If Bell put as much effort into practising the violin as he did into practising his stage antics, maybe he might sound tolerable.

I am not a meanie, I am on a mission of mercy to guide Bell fans out of the dark.

  • dude, just because you hate bell dosen't mean others have to hate him too. If he had better stage antics, then he would be an actor, not a violinist. If you think he's soooooooooooooooo bad, then levae it be like that! Don't say anything against bell. Meaniebutt!

  • kisaiscute, just because I hate Bell, it does not mean that it is for merely subjective reasons.

The reasons that I hate Bell's fiddling are OBJECTIVE and, as such, should be shared by anyone with an appreciation for fine music and quality musicianship rather than silly body movements.

Bell could easily be a mime artist, I've no idea why he chose the violin.

As for my hatred of Bell, I will not "leave it like that"; I will continute to open the eyes and hearts of Bell fans to the truth.

  • "Don't say anything against bell."

I will say what needs to be said about this man's rank amateurism. You and others need me and my profound depth of knowledge about these things. Learn from me kisaiscute, there is much I can teach if only you open your heart to me.

  • oi oi. Just so you know, the reason we're watching this video in the first place is because we want to HEAR bell. So if you don't want to listen to him, then DON'T. Not everyone is going to share your opinion if your going to keep rantng about him like that. Nobody is going to share your opinion just because you tell them that bell sucks. and what did I hear? Rank amateyurism? Look at yourself! How do you know that you know the difference between real music and crappy music? meaniebananabutt!!

  • kisaiscute, you have called me a 'meanie', a 'meaniebutt' and now a 'meaniebananabutt'. I regret to inform you that I am unperturbed by your insults. I am wise enough to understand that being called hurtful names by Bell fans comes with the territory. Rest assured, my dear, that I will continue to open hearts and minds with me wise words, regardless of what Bell fans call me.

Bell is guilty of gross incompetence augmented with grotesque ineptitude. Listening to him is like being skinned alive.

  • :D...

anyways, dude, me insultung you is just hurting you. You insulting bell is hurting bell AND all of his fans. so 1 against thousands? wow.

If you don't want to listen to him, THEN DON'T! If you don't want to be called names, THEN DON'T PROVOkE HIS FANS GOSH! get. some. freaking. sense.

  • kisaiscute, I am at the end of my tether. What will it take for you to wake up and smell the excrement? Bell's playing is musical excrement. I am happy to be insulted in the course of my duties of insulting Bell. I have already helped 13 Bell fans see the light, you will join them soon enough.

Bell is to compositions what Jack the Ripper was to prostitutes.

  • now who are you?!?!?!?!! lol.

  • kisaiscute, I am just your average musical genius attempting to lead Bell's fan to safety: it's a known fact that listening to Bell kills. That is my only purpose with these comments, I hope that one day soon you will join me and the rest of humanity in mocking this man's ridiculous shenanigans.

I've heard 6-year-olds outplay Bell, he is that bad. Hell, even I could outplay Bell. kisaiscute, I implore you to listen other soloists so you can compare their true quality to Bell's pitiful produce.

  • musical genius? You call yourself a musical genius? hmm, let's see you play. the rest of humanity? I'd rather see myself die than become one of you guys. Other soloists? hmm, let's see about that. Joshua Bell, is my fav solist. IYeah, I liten to MANY others, thank you very much. I see true talent behind bell though, and 'm not willing to step down for your continuous ranting about his "pitiful" produce. I'm not willing to see you try to trample over all of his hard work in becoming a violinist.

  • kisaiscute, I weep for you. It is clear to me that Bell's dark magic has a tight grip of you. But in spite of my tears for your safety, rays of hope do penetrate my despair: After all, I am still alive and well to guide you out of Bell's evil darkness!

So fear not, young kisaiscute, your loving friend in England has your best interests at heart and so will continue your education!

When I bite into a lemon my face contorts with displeasure. The same contortions cross my face when Bell plays.

  • HAHAHA. You've got to b kidding me! If anyone has dark magic It's you! Displeasure? DISPLEASURE!?!?!?! If that's how you feel about bell, how about this? When I look at flies, my face contorts with disgust. Just like what I look like when I read your comments. Let's see you do better than bell! Post a video!

go wild! and show the world that you are a world class musician!

  • Your anger betrays an inner conflict.

Yes, a part of you knows I speak the truth, but Bell's darkness keeps this part of you weak and imprisoned. Bell's darkness is angry that I am trying to nourish this part of you and make it strong. You are bravely struggling to rouse yourself from Bell's debilitating evil magic! Yes! I am standing here by your side as you make this transition, kisaiscute! I will not give up on you.

    Your truest friend,

    IHeartJoshuaBell xxx

  • anyways, if I'm in the dark, then I'm willing to stay in it!!!

  • *note:this is all put into euphimism*

You spoiled my happy mood today ==;; Don't give me this poetic crap about weeping for me! This dosen't change the fact that you are an anti-bell. evil darkness? "loving friend??!?!" are you an idiot? When have I ever called you a friend?? Dude, I freaking love bell!!! Do you even know how long he's played!?1?1/ this was a lifetime thing for him. Stop trampling over all of his hard work!!

  • This is Bell's lifetime achievement? Well he can look back on a life thoroughly wasted. If he'd chosen to dedicate himself to something which he had some talent for, such as mime, instead of the violin, we'd be sitting here celebrating him as the best in his field.

Hard work cannot make up for a complete lack of talent.

And I am your truest friend! Do I not try to open your eyes to the true nature of Bell's miserable efforts? Do I not give you my advice free of charge in spite of your insults?

  • I do not celebrate that I made you sad - but pain is sometimes necessary for a greater good. Supposing you had a thorn in your side: it might hurt as I pulled it out, but afterwards you would thank me. So it is with Bell's musicianship: the thorns in your side here are Bell's ludicrous performances. Having me open your eyes to how terrible Bell is may hurt you now, but once you have realised that I speak the truth you will begin to thank me.

Bell is responsible for heinous crimes against music.

  • Oh my gosh! This is wonderful. I have this CD...it's to die for. I am playing this piece at the moment, and it is very difficult, not just the technical aspect, but getting the musical side to be very fluid. Bell did a fantastic job. It is also a very unique interpretation; but one that makes sense. Bravo!

And bravo to darong23 for his great comments.

  • Very nice Job! Bravo!

  • Comment removed

  • There are people like you who can't get over their own fixed ideas.

How well can 'you' play this piece?

Can you make everyone like you playing this piece better than Bell?

Don't say nasty words about Joshua Bell only because he does not understand the music the same way you do.

Just be quiet and listen to him :)

  • No way. Bell does not understand the music period. Uncle June should be listened to and respected.

Thsi is literally the worst performance I've ever heard of Sarasate's masterpieces. This man has a lot to answer for. I awake at night sometimes from a nightmare of being at one of his concerts.
