I've been rewatching this scene and I was surprised at how hesitant Snape was to attack McGonagall! He could have attacked back, but he didn't at all -just blocked! I'm utterly amazed at Rickman's portrayal of Snape! I get chills anytime I see him on screen because of the depth he brought of his character to the screen!
snape hasn't got any intention to fight against mcgonagall, they're on the same side. mcgonagall doesn't know that in this part of the story, the only way snape could survive without stopping mcgonagall is to flee.
Snape probably could have killed McGonagall if he really tried (while he could NOT have killed Dumbledore in combat because he couldn't 'mean' the AK that way- yes, Snape takes House Rivalry a BIT too Siriusly :p) but he wasn't really trying. Snape and McGonagall are probably about equal- think Obi-Wan vs. Anakin Ep.III. 'Evil has power, Good has wisdom, it balances'
But to engage McGonagall in a fight of that level would have risked his own life, and he HAD to survive to give Harry the memory.
Snape didn't even use a single offensive curse or spell. If he had used, McGonagall would have dead by the time but he instead used McGonagall's spells to put Carrows down. What a character.. J.K.Rowling is amazing, I must say.
Interview with J.K stated this it is on Youtube. If the teaches had no rushed in to fight along side Minerva she still would be able to kill Snape in a matter of minutes,Thus achieving its purpose.
Obviously Snape is no coward in terms of fighting. It would just be really difficult for him to fight to the death with his long-time friend and colleague. Even if he COULD defeat Minerva, he'd have still run away before he could.
It will be stated yet again to all those thick heads. mcgonagall is more powerful. fact deal with it. Snape was more skilled at occlumency having been able to fool voldemort but that hardly makes him better at duelling
i really liked that they showed mcgonagall kicking ass but i was really pissed when they didn't show slughorn giving it to them as well. fucking love his character
I feel so bad for snape . He had everybody against him. He had everybody hate him. He had everybody think he was a coward, and people never knew the truth until he died.
@TaliaxTalie Yes and No. Even when rereading the series already knowing who Snape is, there are many times that I can not help but despise him. His treatment of Harry, his friends, and others is just uncalled for.
@TaliaxTalie I never called him a coward. I said quite the opposite. I said it is quite possible that the only reason he fled is because he did not want to hurt them. That is not cowardly. When I said yes and no, i was referring to whether or not he deserved pity, as I clarified in my response. Sure he was a good guy and all, but he was still a git
@fatboy2oo I know. he did bully them. but he still died with people believing he was just another follower of Voldemort, but he was trying to save Harry all along.
I haven't read the books for a while, but I'm pretty sure overall (greatest sorcerers) the order is Dumbledore > Voldemort > McGonagall > Snape, so I think Minerva would of won. Am I right?
@nickprezzo Not entirely sure. Dumbledore is certainly first, but to order McGonagall and Snape that way... there isn't much evidence. Snape fought McGonagall, flitwick(former dueling champion), and another professor and was able to hold his own. It could be argued that he only fled because his true loyalties was with them and he did not want to harm them.
Listen everybody Snape wasn't a kind man. He was cold calculating and cunning. He just wasn't evil and I like him like that! Not everybody has to be goodie two shoes!
I'm just curious as to what exactly Snape thought he was going to do when he pulled his wand on Harry? Or was he so quick thinking that he knew it would force a confrontation with Minvera & the The Order that he could somehow confidently escape unharmed? That is either brave, arrogant or stupid.
Can't believe people are STILL having this arguement. McGonagall was the most powerful witch we saw in the series - she was a standout student much like dumbledore was when she was at school and she survived 4 stunning spells to the chest at her age. Snape is amazingly brave, strong, cunning, but he's not as good at some magic as McGonagall. Accept and move on people.
@Zebsvids11 Exactly! And Rowling, herself, said that McGonagall was third to only Voldemort and Dumbledore when it comes to dueling. Snape was McGonagall's STUDENT. She has FAR more experience in magic than he does.
Where does Rowling rank Moody on that scale? Flitwick? Ollivander? While Ollivander wasn't necessarily a dueling specialist, I could definitely see him being like Yoda-- 'I know so much about the Force/Magic, you actually really don't want to cross Lightsabers/Wands with ME.'
Of the Order members that come across as great duellers, Kingsley and Sirius Black might be good, but they're no McGonagall for sure...but Flitwick is another Hogwarts Prof and a known Dueling Champ, and Ollivander...?????
1) I don't know why do i need to watch this video since i own the original dvd.
2) Secondly. McGonagall definitely stronger. In wizarding world 'experience and intelligent' of the wizard or witch is affecting on their combat ability. And therefore Minerva is stronger than Snape. (Not to mention she was member of the first Order {and survive until Voldemort's dead} and Department of Magical Law Enforcement employee)
McGonnagal was more powerful than Snape so face facts people..... Even JK Rowling herself said that McGonnagal was... therefore it's set it stone. Her series her rules.
SNAPE IS NOT A COWARD! Why would he want to urt Professor McGonagall anyway? He is a kind man, that's why he didn't fight back. If it was his enemy, he would surely have won. NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO CALL HIM A COWARD. IF YOU DO, YOU ARE A COWARD YOURSELF! Than-you.
I'm finding it funny theres so many Snape ass kissers here. Go do your damn research! It's a fact Mcgonagall was always 2nd to Dumbledore among the teachers. Whether Snape was holding back or not is irrelvevent. She still woulda kicked his ass anyway!
@SameshitdifdayFails That's bullshit. That he is holding back is 100% relevant and makes whether or not she could have kicked his ass pointless because he was not going to engage (and possibly have to kill) another friend. We kiss Snape's ass because he is the baddest bad ass of them all because he possesses the greatest of all strengths - mental fortitude. Everyone else trembled at the mere mention of 'voldemort' yet Snape lied to his face for over a decade. LOL Snape is epic
Too bad Jk Rowlings Disagrees with you. She said in an interview that if the fight were to continue he would have been killed. Tell me. Why should i believe you over the Damn author?i'm waiting...............Oh and yep he lied. But eventually got destroyed by Voldemort. FUNNY STUFF
@SameshitdifdayFails You fail to grasp my point.I've no doubt McG could maybe take Snape, the point was he wasn't going to find out by fighting and poss killing another friend. It's that simple. He deflected and got away to handle important business. As to J.K. I think she's always had a bit of a hard heart toward Snape. She made him suffer endlessly then killed him off. She says he's not a hero.I doubt she'd admit Snape might have grown stronger than McG through exper as a doubleagent for decades
@GrissomLovesSara There is no COULD about it the author who created these characters stated that Minerva would obliterate snape in a matter of minutes thus achieving its purpose your views are not overshadowed its just we will take the person who created them boths word over yours. And if he were turly stronger than mcgonagall he would still be alive.
@TheAbsol123 J.K Rowling never stated Minerva was stronger. However Minerva is probably a more skilled witch. Her magic was incredibly strong and her duelling skills were on par with Kingsley, the head of Aurors. Pomfrey said that no one could best Minerva in a one on one battle, excluding the obvious exceptions. Snape however displays a wide range of deadly spells and stamina, and was personally trained by Voldemort. It could go either way.
@SameshitdifdayFails Furthermore, was McGonagall anywhere near the practiced occlumence Snape was. That xtraordinary skill could have given Snape an edge also. I just don't think it's so clear cut and don't think Jk fully grasps the life we see in the character of Snape. She makes him amazingy brave, loyal, smart with legilimency but yet doesn't seem capable of thinking he might have grown to meet and surpass other characters like McG due to his decade of serv to Vold and all that entailed?
I love this scene I'm addicted to it! Everday I watch this scene and it gives me some encourage...Minerva I loved that character since I first saw it...First scene some woman turning out from cat!!! All of you who love Minerva join my facebook group: "Minerva McGonagall: Gryffindor's pride''
McGonagall had always been a very powerful wizard, but what is this? Former Gryffindor headmistress VS Slytherin headmaster? Why did the others move away when they could have killed Snape? They outnumbered him! (Although they should really not kill Snape... No spoiler intended)
Guys, stop fighting over which one would win. They are both incredibly powerful, McGonagall took 4 stunning spells and managed to survive. She and Snape are most certainly equal.
Truth is whether or not Snape could defeat McGonagall is irrelevant. If there was a way for him to safely disarm her, I'm sure he would have but McGonagall is a talented witch. All in all they are pretty evenly matched if you compare talent and experience. One thing is for sure from this video, she was prepared to fight until the end and he wasn't.
Honestly, I think Snape is the third strongest wizard in the series, besides Voldemort and Dumbledore. Perhaps Bellatrix is a close fourth, but Snape is highly skilled.
She was the only one to escape the Ministry when Dumbledore showed up. She deflected his spell. She also took on many other wizards effortlessly. Molly got lucky, well, Molly got lucky because it inflicted a huge emotional response to have her kill Bellatrix.
@UnknownXV Um the author already stated and i quote. Even now that Dumbledore and Voldemort are gone, Minerva Mcgonagall takes over as the most powerful wizard and now new headmistriss at hogwarts.
it pisses me right off. The films could have been much more true to the books and more detailed. But no they changed everything added their own shite and took away good stuff. But i did enjoy this scene. But its nothing in comparison to how amazing the other fights would have been had they been included.
I personally love this scene cause we never actually get to see her fight in any of the other movies. she is an amazing witch which is said throughout the books and movies and this scene shows that she is as good as Snape who we also know to be an exceptional wizard.
mcgonagal would beat nearly everyone in a fight but have u all not read the books? snape is incredibly clever! apart from dumbledore and voldermort snape would beat anyone
snape's no coward. Esp in the book where he fights 3 at once. People that haven't read the books and have only seen the movie and call themselves harry potter fans are greatly mistaken. Harry potter fans are when you can recited the books and movies by heart.
McGinagall will win whatsoever, she is such a more experienced duelist than Snape, you don't get to be Deputy Headmistress without knowing how to madter magic.
Hmm, I don't know who could win in this fight, but I have read the book... In the book Snape was against three... Minerva, Flitwick, and Sprout... But here it was shown almost too easy for Minerva... Because Snape didn't fight back... And of course he is NOT a coward... As Harry says his last words in the movie, he says he is the braviest man he ever met... Poor Snape, he had a sad life. His happiest moments was with Lily, but it was Snape's fault that he lost her. Read the books to learn why!!
@Ainstain2008 In the book there was a duel just between McGonagall and Snape, and it's made clear that Minerva is third to Voldemort and Dumbledore when it comes to power. JK Rowling herself said that once Voldemort and Dumbledore died, McGonagall was the most powerful wizard alive.
@Azlaier I don't know it exactly but I think you are wrong... Yes, Rowling said something about the most powerful wizard after Dumbledoor and Voldemort but she said that Snape is, not McGonagall. Don't underestimate Snape. While all the other professor were just doing their lessons in their class those 7 years, Snape had to spy to lord Voldemort. Do you think that McGonagall could manage it as well as Snape? Yes, she is very powerful but Snape is more powerful in my opinion...
@Ainstain2008 Um no i have a pottermore account and i am quite sure the next after dumbledore and voldemort is mcgonagall as even stated in the books prisoner of azkaban and a quote Mcgonagall second to dumbledore and voldemort siezed control of the problem taking actions into her hands. so no snape isnt
I was yelling at screen: "Can't you people see, that he's not even fighting back?! He would kill her if he wanted to. McGonagall wouldn't stand a chance. Where are your eyes growing from?" I just wish people in the movies would listen to me!
ok people read the book...he does fight back, and he's fighting against mcgonagall, flitwick, and sprout...i think that's all..anyway, the book is better in every way. this was still a good scene tho
@SirGrodusFTW lol your comment made my day ^^ it is so true though

Snape kills the Carrows! BEAST! GO SNAPE YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!! REAL OF ALL 7 BOOKS!!!!!
ps3Nerak1001 2 months ago
McGonagall had always been a very powerful wizard, but what is this? Former Gryffindor headmistress VS Slytherin headmaster? Why did the others move away when they could have killed Snape? They outnumbered him! (Although they should really not kill Snape... No spoiler intended)

Guys, stop fighting over which one would win. They are both incredibly powerful, McGonagall took 4 stunning spells and managed to survive. She and Snape are most certainly equal.
benjazikinzie 2 months ago
@benjazikinzie True, plus, neither were putting in much effort into dueling eachother.
GranfaloonIncarnate 2 months ago
Truth is whether or not Snape could defeat McGonagall is irrelevant. If there was a way for him to safely disarm her, I'm sure he would have but McGonagall is a talented witch. All in all they are pretty evenly matched if you compare talent and experience. One thing is for sure from this video, she was prepared to fight until the end and he wasn't.

i'm really into the effects of harry potter magic...but is snape a bad guy, like one of those guys who turn into black smoke....

Honestly, I think Snape is the third strongest wizard in the series, besides Voldemort and Dumbledore. Perhaps Bellatrix is a close fourth, but Snape is highly skilled.
UnknownXV 3 months ago
@UnknownXV Bellatrix is not one of the best! She was easy killed by: Molly! XD
RooX94 3 months ago
@UnknownXV Fan fare.
She was the only one to escape the Ministry when Dumbledore showed up. She deflected his spell. She also took on many other wizards effortlessly. Molly got lucky, well, Molly got lucky because it inflicted a huge emotional response to have her kill Bellatrix.
UnknownXV 3 months ago
@UnknownXV I don't say she is bad at all! I just say that she is not one of the best ones and the lucky thing you say is just pure bullshit! XD
RooX94 3 months ago
@UnknownXV Um the author already stated and i quote. Even now that Dumbledore and Voldemort are gone, Minerva Mcgonagall takes over as the most powerful wizard and now new headmistriss at hogwarts.

it pisses me right off. The films could have been much more true to the books and more detailed. But no they changed everything added their own shite and took away good stuff. But i did enjoy this scene. But its nothing in comparison to how amazing the other fights would have been had they been included.
myeyeswillburn 3 months ago
I personally love this scene cause we never actually get to see her fight in any of the other movies. she is an amazing witch which is said throughout the books and movies and this scene shows that she is as good as Snape who we also know to be an exceptional wizard.

good observation about snape aiming the spells at the carrows. i love the fight scenes in the movie but i like them better in the book. :)

mcgonagal would beat nearly everyone in a fight but have u all not read the books? snape is incredibly clever! apart from dumbledore and voldermort snape would beat anyone
GAYSCOUSER23 3 months ago
I would pull out a pistol, turn it sideways to ensure a killshot and shoot everyone.
Sorted.
xXSamPlummerXx 3 months ago
snape's no coward. Esp in the book where he fights 3 at once. People that haven't read the books and have only seen the movie and call themselves harry potter fans are greatly mistaken. Harry potter fans are when you can recited the books and movies by heart.

GO MCGONNAGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only does Snape not fight back, but also notice how he doesn't reflect the spells back at Mcgonagall, but at the Carrows.
sirmoorgate1994 3 months ago
McGinagall will win whatsoever, she is such a more experienced duelist than Snape, you don't get to be Deputy Headmistress without knowing how to madter magic.

Notice:
Snape only blocks he never sends anything back.

Mcgonagall would have defeated snape. Rowling said it
toonslifer 3 months ago
Hmm, I don't know who could win in this fight, but I have read the book... In the book Snape was against three... Minerva, Flitwick, and Sprout... But here it was shown almost too easy for Minerva... Because Snape didn't fight back... And of course he is NOT a coward... As Harry says his last words in the movie, he says he is the braviest man he ever met... Poor Snape, he had a sad life. His happiest moments was with Lily, but it was Snape's fault that he lost her. Read the books to learn why!!

@Ainstain2008
I think Snape was second only to Voldemort. But he did not use for evil. He was a good man.
Songoty9582222 2 months ago
@Ainstain2008 Actually Minerva dueled Snape alone and then Flitwick and Sprout showed up.

That wasnt Voldemort?
kedvesa94 2 months ago
@kedvesa94 No Voldemort was not there while they fought. They were as you said... Snape against the 3 professors...
Ainstain2008 2 months ago
@Ainstain2008 In the book there was a duel just between McGonagall and Snape, and it's made clear that Minerva is third to Voldemort and Dumbledore when it comes to power. JK Rowling herself said that once Voldemort and Dumbledore died, McGonagall was the most powerful wizard alive.
Azlaier 2 months ago
@Azlaier I don't know it exactly but I think you are wrong... Yes, Rowling said something about the most powerful wizard after Dumbledoor and Voldemort but she said that Snape is, not McGonagall. Don't underestimate Snape. While all the other professor were just doing their lessons in their class those 7 years, Snape had to spy to lord Voldemort. Do you think that McGonagall could manage it as well as Snape? Yes, she is very powerful but Snape is more powerful in my opinion...
Ainstain2008 2 months ago
@Ainstain2008 Um no i have a pottermore account and i am quite sure the next after dumbledore and voldemort is mcgonagall as even stated in the books prisoner of azkaban and a quote Mcgonagall second to dumbledore and voldemort siezed control of the problem taking actions into her hands. so no snape isnt
TheAbsol123 1 month ago

I was yelling at screen: "Can't you people see, that he's not even fighting back?! He would kill her if he wanted to. McGonagall wouldn't stand a chance. Where are your eyes growing from?" I just wish people in the movies would listen to me!
