Reflected on my personal dealings with Porter Wagoner. While I disagreed with alot of what the man did and said, his right. He was a pioneer and anchor in the development of country music. He stayed true. Had several great hits. Member of the Opry . He was wrong on many occasions. But, oh so right so many others. With a humble heart and bowed knee, I apologize to you Mr Wagoner. Please except . I' ll be at Toostie's
I was brought up in a suburb called Parkview in johannesburg South Africa. We didnt have Country music. there then. So I guess I was commited to Parkview
This is the round about way Porter received the song
Twenty-five years ago, after Johnny Cash took an interest in some of Wagoner's early recordings, he wrote "Committed to Parkview," about a stay in a mental asylum not far from Nashville, where Cash and Wagoner both spent time. Cash gave a cassette recording of the song to bandmate Marty Stuart, who was instructed to pass it along to Wagoner, which he did-- two and a half decades later
@starr522 i don't agree with you, to call it pitiful is just way off base, sure he had seen better days but he still sounded great, and to say the song is pitiful well i guess what is a good song is a matter of opinion and of course you have yours, but mine is that it is a great song, and i have been in in rehabs and crisis intervention and some say i was not in a good state of mind so i can relate to it,i am happy to say now i am doing pretty good, but i thought his performance was not bad
@acadx To each their own opinion. This I deem was pitiful. One last grasp. While he pretty much sounded the same. He was pitiful. I had met the man on several occasions while in the business. I didn t like him. He was arrogant and self possessed. Wanting 50% of all that Dolly made was a freaking joke. The courts ruled in her faver. Porter loved Porter. Not all that shines as gold is gold. RIP Porter. You knew you were wrong on many occasions.
"Committed to Parkview" is the first-person account of a tenant of Nashville's legendary sanitorium, listening in on the tormented cries of his fellow inmates. Porter and Marty decided to build an album, Wagonmaster, around the song
From Amazon.com
In 1966 his doctor admitted him to Parkview, a former Nashville psychiatric hospital. His friend Johnny Cash later wrote a song called "Committed to Parkview" that was pitched to Wagoner in a roundabout way
This song did for Porter what "Hurt" did for Johnny Cash, closed out his career on a haunting note. RIP to both Johnny Cash (1932-2003) and Porter Wagoner (1927-2007)
@joshuabrooks21 Well put. Both men weren't afraid to look at the darkest side of the human experience, and put it into memorable songs. Memory Eternal to both these great figures of country music.
I was commited to 2 psych hospitals over a 3 month period. Now I'm on disability for a nervous breakdown. This song is dead on with psych hospitals. I have to allow myself to watch it otherwise the anxiety will kill me. R.I.P Johnny Cash and Porter Wagoner
yeah this was written by johnny cash an is on his 1976 album ONE PEICE AT A TIME ... this is a beautiful version .. maybe even better than the original
After watching this, a thought occured to me. If you combine every single artist in country music today, along with every concert, show, promotion, and song and added it all up, it still could not come close to touching this man and his stature.
This song was written by Johnny Cash. When I was 11 I had the chance to meet Porter at Bass Pro,he was getting his gun worked on. I didn't really understand how big he was at the time. Very plesant man.
@holt051807 Johnny cash wrote it for sure. both he and Porter Waggoner at different times spent some time in Parkviewmental hospital in Topeka Kansas. He wrote it with Porter in mind andc after recording it on The Highwaymen's album One Piece At A time in 1976 he gave the song to waggoner. And who said Country music was all the same
CAGLE123 Thanks Porter This is real music not some of todays so called stars if their voices are any good I would not know it with their damn twangy guitars I hate thiis damn crap they play now thanks for posting.
Sad too see one of my heros so down and old but hes stiil GReat in my book along with jhonny hank hank snow tex ritter andy williams conway twitty kitty wells johnny wright lefty frizzell i mean my god gearge jones said it best "who's gonna fill their shoes" that is a tall order
Thaks Man I Like some of the new guys too but this is where it started. without these guys the bnew ones would not be here. in addition the guys that and gals that are comming up now are comming from reallaty shows like idel america got talen these guys had to struggle to make and now it basicly handed to them, and some are not even that good!
Agreed on the reality shows comment, back in the day these cats had to live on bologna samiches for years just to get thier chance but the few that were good and great now made it. Anyhow i never saw that in the video until now that when Porter came out he gave a thumbs up or whatever to Morty thats very kewl.

I hope no one decides this one is a copy right infringement. RIP Porter. We love you and this is one beautiful song, you never lost your ability to sing or to tell a story..
What can we say ? Porter never lost his ability to sing. His voice was a beautiful now as it ever was. I hope that country music honors Porter in the same way they honored Johnny and June because he is in the same wonderful class as they are. Rest in peace Porter I will never again see you on the Opry but I will always know you are there!

For almost 15 years I am a fan of Dolly Parton. So of course I got interested in Porter, too. I really think he was a fine songwriter.
He should have done more albums in the years before he died. He was quite talented.
This was a touching preformance. Much better than lots of todays country-music.
