  • So what was it like finished? There should be a turbo 2.5 option for the Mazda5 that is better tuned for normal deriving that gets better millage while still out performing a Honda Odyssey. That should be the goal. But with today's tech a variable mileage/performance system should be in place controlling our mileage not production design politics connected to oil production. Less that 30 mpg for a Mazda 3 or 5 (136 pound difference, that's all) with a 3.2 Co/drag is a joke in 2012. Finish MS 5!

  • Just bump the hp/torque for the standard Mazda 5 to 185, and most folks will be happy. Trust this...

  • I actually like the idee of a MPV being fast...I think it can be done and it is a nice concept...If you own a MPV you should also be able to enjoy cars as much as a hatchback owner...

  • Good demonstration of how difficult things get when you try to modify a modern vehicle. The engine was a perfect fit, but the computer and harness made the job a nightmare. If Car and Driver had this much trouble with a fairly "simple" swap, what chance is there for the rest of us?

  • 0:51 uhm that's not a MS3. Its a basic hatch with 16"s. i have an '07 MS3 and that's definately not one.

  • That is a MS3 they just swap the wheels from the Mazda 5

  • It was a special Mazda test vehicle I believe... so it wasn't equipped with the go fast goodies like the 18 inch wheels and larger spoiler. It was damaged in transit from a mazda test facility when it was atop a car carrier... so this was basically a pre-production vehicle.

    pretty sure those are the mazda 5 wheels they swaped over and the ms3 had those rays you see on the "mazdaspeed5"

  • They just swapped the wheels with the Mazda 5. You can tell its a MS3 by the spoiler and its obviously a turbo because of the intercooler. I cant believe you owned one and cant tell the diff. I have an 09 MS3 btw

  • @awol09 the same reason why people put a k20 engine in a honda fit/jazz, or the same reason people put a skyline rb26 engine in a 200sx, simply beacause no one else has aone and you will have the fastest one out there.

  • I wonder how many hours went into the conversion. Do they sell the speed 3 engine alone? Would I be able to swap it into my 2000 626?

  • I'm not sure how many hours went into the conversion, but I bet it's a lot. They got the engine from a speed3 that was totaled, but the engine was fine.

  • What a pimpin wagon! I love sleeper cars, and that is one heck of a sleeper.

  • the problem with these cars is that you also have to change the key. You have to use the key from the 3. That key "talks" to the BCM under the dash which in turn "talks" to the ECM. Obviously the harness have to swapped as well. without doing this, the engine will never run right. It might even loose oil pressure and go into limp mode every 10 minutes. Then you'll have to modify every fusible link connection to the BCM (power windows, locks etc.) very interesting project guys!

  • They can probably get away with just buying an Accessport and using that to tune the engine. The FMIC is probably throwing off the stock ECU.

  • You don't need a reason to put together something like this. You just dream it up and then go at it. Its soo much better when you can do it on someone elses dime though. Its a great car the projecto had to be a blast.
