The Official Language Act made Sinhalese the official language of Sri Lanka. It began with the state sponsored settlement of Sinhalese in traditional Tamil lands. Then one million Tamils lost their Sri Lankan citizenship and many were repatriated to India.
Tamils were systematically removed from government jobs, parliament, and denied access to higher education.
