The big picture is that in order to know who you are you need to learn who you were, and as a species we are still in our adolescence so yes we are still making childish mistakes any kid would make.

i'm actually planning a career in teaching as well, with one yr left in my undergrad and one of my majors happen to be in history. tutoring a grade 7 history lesson, i found the textbook to be oversimplistic stating merchantilism as the reason for european settlement in north america. only after doing 3rd yr canadian history course i learn there were millions of natives at the time. most ppl will never sit in a university level canadian history course and think, where are all the natives?

That's a very shallow view you are taking.

If you studied history looking with an open mind for ways how the messengers of God have positively influenced the world, I think you'd see some of the countless ways.

For example you can thank Islam for uniting the all tribes of that area and having them get along well enough for them to establish the first universities, where they developed modern medicine, chemistry, algebra, etc.

A lot of you can easily measure, and some of it is harder.

The books seem to contraditct themselves because you can't have the same solution for every problem. Parts are relative. Jesus said for the person that has not sinned to cast the first stone, not to stone people for working on Sundays. Have you ever tried to measure the good done by people that believe in God and his books instead of just thinking about the killing people have falsely done in the name of religion? Ever thought about how much civilization has advanced because of these Books?
