You've gotta be kidding me. Changing the oil in a smart car is effortless. About the hardest thing to do is to open the oil bottle. This suction method is junk- made for feeble folks who are too week to unscrew a drain plug.
it does not do a proper job of changing the oil, it leaves ALOT of old oil and sludge/dirt in the bottom of the crankcase which mixes in with the new oil.
These devices got debunked as garbage years ago. The absolute best way to change the oil? Go under and use the drain plug. That way you can inspect the oil for any signs of future engine problems, and you'll get all of it out. Can't believe these products are making a come back--
Since I have a 2006, this is the only option I have. Oil filter is easy to access without a lift, though. Then again, most of my past cars have been Mercedes, with the filter canister easy to access from the top, so I have use a TopSider or similar suction device for many years. It certainly simplifies things, particularly on cars that don't need a lift to change the filter.
It's easier without using the suction device - just unscrew the drain plug and let gravity do the work. And you don't need a lift to get access to the oil filter.
@ezkeyboardkid58 you don't have to lift in order to change the filter. I suppose he just lifted the car in order for you to see the filter location. If you know where it is you can reach it by hand.
I think you miss spoke about the oils. 0W40 is thicker at operating than a 5W30, so in a hot climate the 0W40 would make more sense. The first number on a multi-grade oil is the viscosity at 40 degrees Celsius; the second number is the viscosity and 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit. That said, most people can stick with the same second number, because the engine is liquid cooled. If you drive like a maniac, than you might want a thicker oil (Second Number).
The 5W30 will also work in brutally cold weather. I would highly recommend using Amsoil over Mobil 1 for this car or any other car. Amsoil is superior to Mobil 1 in every way and that's proven by industry standard ASTM testing.
Supposedly an Amsoil EAO9 filter will fit this car or a Trasko TMR-10SS. The Trasko is the best oil filter for the buck. It's a bypass filter that you change every 10k miles. Run Amsoil 0W30 with this filter and that engine will last forever.
@Neonspinnazz30 hi your car is gas i have a2005 diesel withs has a oil card ridge and the location of the stick is on the fare right the wrench size for the oil cap is 1.1/16 inch

This is the only way to change oil in the smart, but not this version, the old smart 450 doesn't have drain plug.

What's the point of the drain pump if you're going under the car for the filter replacement?

I bought the pump, worked as shown and I changed the filter without lifting it up. Great product.

dont waste your money on this gimmick,
it does not do a proper job of changing the oil, it leaves ALOT of old oil and sludge/dirt in the bottom of the crankcase which mixes in with the new oil.

OR...you can just lay down on the ground, drain the oil into a pan, and change the filter....no need to lift anything up unless youre a lazy bum
