ha ha! we buy the big bags of unsalted peanuts at costco to feed them, the squirrels, and the stellar's jays that live around here during winter...they are such crazy birds! some of them will go along and 'weigh' the peanuts by picking them up one by one, then take the heaviest one...they are so bossy and greedy, but are so cute!
I never knew it was that rare had a young one show up while I was feeding the adults after a few days it stopped doing it to the other scrubjays and would stand on my foot making that cry till I would feed him.
its always special when little creatures trust people to have a bond with even if its for food, I think the most unusual story I've heard about these jays is Lorenzo the scrub jay. he once got back at two crows for stealing his food by getting out of his cage overturning the crows nest of eggs then going back into the cage closing the door and pretending to sleep when the two crows returned making a fuss over the messed up nest. the owner saw it all!
Young Brewer's Blackbirds also make that screeching sound when they want to be fed by a parent. I just wish I recorded it when I saw it, taking the bus to my campus a year ago.
A Steller's Jay will try to stuff as many nuts in his beak as he can. Then he will fly away and hide them for later. He wants to fill his larder while times are good. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
This is a great vid! I've got scrub jays in my backyard that love peanuts, too. They absolutely love them! I put them on the fence, and in their greed, they always knock them down when they try to pick up more than one! It must be a scrub jay thing....totally agree lol
Excellent video quality. I've never been fortunate enough to hand-feed the scrub-jays in my backyard, but at least now I know they love peanuts. Btw, are those peanuts fresh or roasted?
And what do they do with their peanuts? They bury them, depriving the Oak Tits from getting any....
Still very cute.

Very good closeup shots of the jay.
My scrub Jays only take one peanut at a time.

So true! Hahaha. They always must take 2...or 3. Even if it would be faster to eat one, then take another, or fly away and come back. Scrubbies rule.

Well done, you must make some more film. Very bright birds, you look after them.

Funny! I've never seen the two-peanut technique, but they are curious birds.

We love our scrub jay buddies too. This guy is kinda unique with his "two peanut" philosophy. Great video.
