It is so gorgeous to hear someone that talented actually say - objectively, honestly and without ego - how great something was that they did. She wasn't full of herself and she wasn't oozing false modesty; she was just speaking the TRUTH. Too often, people get criticism for just admitting something they did was really good.
5:15 - A comment on her timing - Yes, she had it - she truly was a master of timing. Thank God she liked the Norman Lear script or else someone else would have played Maude and that is just unimaginable.
she's my favorite actress who could easily beat the shit out of me. RIP Beatrice, you will be missed by millions and will always be known to me as Dorothy Zbornik
@cheeriosinabowl Indeed. When I think of Maude, I think of Mrs. Naugatuck's first episode. She mentioned to Maude that she'd found a vase full of old dust lying around, and flushed the dust down the toilet. Maude gave her that deadpan look, and held it for the longest time... before saying... "That was my second husband".
She may not know what folks are talking about referencing her 'timing' but I sure do! She is right that it has to do with courage. She will wait and wait until SHE thinks the next moment is right for a line, rather than having it determined by the tempo established by some director or clock. Arthur does not rush for a laugh or for exterior validation tat the expense of her character. Very few performers have that kind of courage
Arthur's denial of her honorable Marine Corps service during WW2 is hugely disappointing and reflects badly on her character. It makes one wonder just how profoundly Hollywood's anti-American and anti-military bias infects not only the industry, but the people involved with it. Bea was obviously a casualty.
@mso88 mso I love movie stars and their movies but their actions sometimes bewilder me. But what I think is that they are just human like the rest of us with the distinct difference being that the press makes them think that we want to hear everything that they think.
I'm a service connected vet and don't find any of them offensive except Jane Fonda's...and she's been forgiven.
Love you Bea.. Thank you for many thrills and laughs.. You're missed and unforgetable.. Love Maude are at least the (1st season) on dvd and can't get enough of The Golden Girls...
I have never seen her show Maude, since I saw her on golden girls I was curious someone said Maude was a great hit, so I thought I would watch some of them and she was a great actess in Maude I just wish I would have been up with the times however I was like 7 when this show Maude came out so I was not interested in this till I am now in my later years lets just say and I wish now I could have see this while she was doing this at the time, thanks for posting loved it
@dobb673 - I'm sure her two husbands made sure before they married her.... That's one of the things that makes Bea Arthur unique. She was masculine and feminine at the same time--strong and vulnerable. Don't knock it!
RIP, Bea. I loved the joy and happiness you left us with all of your amazing work. There will never be another one like you. Thank you, Maudie/Dorothy/Yente!
God i loved maude ! She was the only one who could tell off archie!!!! Bea Arthur was a one in a millon, there will never be another talented " 5'9 woman in her stockinged feet." WIth a low baritone voice like bea arthur... there just won't ..... because in Bea's own words from this interview " Dammit we were good we were really good." God she didn't realize just how true those words were and still are up to this very moment.
I LOVED Bea Arthur but, the Golden Girls was the ultimate ensemble cast. They were ALL great, and worked so well together. They were all funny in their own way. Maud was great too, I wish they had done more episodes. We'll miss you Bea!
I grew up watching Bea on Maude. I WISH they would release the rest of the series on DVD. I also WISH TVLand would stick to its roots and program classic television.... Miss you Bea!
Absolutely loved her - I will miss her...I grew up watching her on the Golden Girls- she was awesome! She made the show the success it is!! I just a few years ago started getting into Maude and I love her character too! There will never be shows like there used to be....
She was great in All in the Family, and her show Maude, golden girls wasn't for me, and dont' remember much, but she is Maude.
It's strange how people leave comments saying RIP and thanks to people who are gone, as if they're watching and reading this, but I guess it's to help US cope, huh?
☆☆βεα ☆☆ Thank you for all your work, To bring such happy entertainment into our generation's lives! From the start of All in the Family, Maude & Golden Girls. Rest in Peace Pussy cat #1! £ονε γα!
I'm sorry to hear that she has died! But looking at this video, I say to myself how much she aged. But she was a great actress in everything she's done! RIP Bea.
I loved Bea Arthur in both "Maude" and "The Golden Girls". Also, on 'All in The Family'. The couple episodes she starred in, and sparred with Carroll O'Connor, as "Archie" were classics. I always wished that she had interacted more with "Archie". He and "Maude" had great fights! I loved the one about Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
The facade of the house shown is actually 89-70 Cooper Avenue, Glendale, NY. the semiattached house at 89-70 Cooper Avenue in Glendale has a "estimate" (its supposed "market price") of $565,000 as of January 2008.
What about the house use as the exterior shots in the opening of 'Maude'? Anyone know if that house was really in Tuckahoe? Is the house still there?
Loved her. You can't do perfect any better. She was into that character!
