Matsudaira's strategy was simple. He attacked Ma Lin's backhand since he doesn't have a consistent reverse penhold. Then he suddenly switched to his forehand to have Ma Lin go running. But at the end, Ma Lin's skills and experience proved to be better than Matsudaira's. Great match. :D
Interesting strategy from Matsudaira Kenta. Would not work at all against Wang Hao though, would it, with his insane rpb. It's rare to find a pen holder of Ma Lin's caliber to be this vulnerable to attacks to his backhand and concomitant opening up of his far forehand side. Well done by Matsudaira, even if it wasn't quite enough.
That was so intense, at the start of the final game I was thinking WOAH! Kenta Matsudaira is a beast, he's got this, and then you remember Ma Lin's fucking mental and just turns it up a few notches in the last dozen points. One of the best matches I've ever seen.
@gabraham12 Interesting! I like little facts like this! Must admit he is a tiny man! Ma Lin is one of the smallest in the China team and he's much bigger! Matsudaira must be about 5' 3"!
I think Kenta's serve is a superb innovation. Every time I play against someone using the Tomahawk serve so long as you can read the banana movement it it actually easy to flick back. Kenta's got it so that he can banana to either side.
@hkjkdsifu I totally agree with you kenta's service, is a complex service full of differents effects at the same time... you que see the side spin, the bak spin .. and sometimes the topspin in the service ... I wouldn't like to play agains him!!!! Lol !
@MrPawany yea. kenta isn't a blocker either. modern technique in japan teaches shorter compact strokes. kenta was trained in this way so he takes the ball early off the bounce.
furthermore, the japanese emphasize usage of the backhand as a primary counter.
if you watch JTTA, a bunch of em play similarly. there's this guy who was in the finals of a jp national open recently who beat ma long 4-0.
Who the hell cares what country produces the best players ??!!! This was a game between 2 world class players which we all enjoy tremendously, that's IT ! The rest is bullshit, and by the way, as I am typing this, Timo Boll is #1 in the world, not anyone else from China or wherever else./ Peace to all
@farofir Yeah! Thanks to the lingering injury on Ma Long. At any given day he's 100% healthy, Ma Long will defeat Timo astoundingly. As such, Timo Boll deserves to be #1 now. But to retain national pride, Timo's fellowmen of younger generation has to step up and keep their banner fluttering, as what you can say of China's.
@AragonAgapao But that also shows the mental toughness of Ma Lin, does it. He makes the points that count the most under the most stressful circumstances. That's a sign of a true champion.
in my opinion ma lin was very mentally weak in this game. he was up 3-1 and then choked, and it became 3-3. ma lin does have a bad mental game in the wttc. look in 2007, he was winning 3-1, 7-1 and ended up losing 3-4 11-8. ma lin is an extrodinary player no doubt, but his cockiness and weak mental game(especially when hes leading the game) cost him many unforced errors, and allowing kenta to go to 7 games with him. if ma lin played strong throughout the hwoke match it would have been 4-0 ma lin
Kenta is so talented, to get so close to beating a legend. At the end though, that is why the Chinese are really the best, it's the ability to force a win on several points in a row, sort of an overdrive/kill mode.
watch my video, you can earn FREE money online and then buy blades and rubbers! I already earned more than 2000 dollars and I bought 3 Timo Boll Spirit ALC, soo cool!
While Kenta never developed due to lack of power and sub-par forehand even in Europe, I still think his style of variety of counters and close to the table blocks, like an evolution of Oh's style, is the future of opposing the Chinese. Here Ma Lin just kept feeding balls to his backhand and make it needlessly close.
@Opalance ma lin's looping is just particularly weak in terms of power. ever since the 40 mm ball, it is very hard for a penhold player to get enough power. so it's not ma lin in particular.

It is fun to see the Chinese a little unsettled! Kenta certainly played a game of chess here with Ma Lin! I only wished he had won, are we seeing a resurgent Japanese presence in table tennis?
matching of play style...? i beat players rated at 2000 back when i was first started but i lost to players at 1000 too. that's more out of my own inexperience, but it just shows if someone has a play style that is dangerous to yours, it would be a tougher match
