  • @hunterathome - Oh...and 'Lend lease' was from 1941 - 1945.

We fought off the Germans without U.S help....in 1940. A year BEFORE 'lend lease.

  • the movie has cheesy effects and explosions but the real plane action is just awesome. u wont ever see that again, this would all be CGI today.

  • WHY OH WHY did the nazis try to gain air superiority with heinkels......

hey i know, we need to clear the skies for a tank invasion, lets send in bombers to CLEAR THE SKIES!

  • "SHPITFOYAR!"

  • At 1:53, the air gunners flask of 'Tomato Heinz' explodes!

  • I think every American who thinks that "America saved Britains ass in dubya dubya two" should watch this and realise that it was the grossly outnumbered Royal Air Force and it's few pilots that saved Britain's ass =)

....and they did it well over a whole year BEFORE America joined the war!

  • @englishguy2010 yes, but not a year before our massive material contributions to the UK's war effort

  • @runningcockroach - Granted, but that still doesn't mean you "Saved our ass". You just helped us out. America played no part in Britains defence during the Battle of Britain.

  • @englishguy2010 true. i dont know why people say that either, we didnt save the UK. But we did wipe up the western front after we stopped island hopping in the pacific. Our bomber runs were superior.

  • @englishguy2010 Except for Eagle pilots, and Lend-Lease P-40's, P-400's, P-36's, fuel, & food, etc

  • @hunterathome - Only seven Americans took part in the Battle of Britain. That's hardly 'saving our ass'. The U.S military and government did FUCK ALL to help us when the Nazis were trying to invade (aside from loaning us guns and food....which we had to pay the bill for).

  • @hunterathome - Plus, the RAF fought the Battle of Britain with British made aircraft - not P-40's, P-400's, P-36's and fuel. :)

  • @runningcockroach - Lend-Lease was from 1941 - 1945

1940 is a year before that

  • Love this movie. Great scene. One of the best War films Ever. I think every Brit should know the spitfire. :)

  • A truly rousing movie, great score

  • This is truly an epic war movie. So many war movies today rely on CGI, these are original aircraft (although I believe the Heinkels were borrowed from the Spanish Airforce).

  • This is by far my favourite scene from any movie, has been ever since I first saw it as a kid.

  • 23 scumbags dislike what was a superb film depicting the the most heroic act of defense ever. i am humbled by those men who are downright heros and should never be forgotten. ship these 23 wankers and anyone else who dislikes this off to an island and have a spitfire shoot at them for fun.

  • 1:52 My favorite part.

  • 0:54 oh shit..

  • Break it off. Home and tea

  • We're an island race, we're born to fight. We stood alone in 1940, lead by the greatest leader ever born. True heroes of a bygone age.

  • @cheekyboy37 When I discover how the Germans were stopped at the shores of Britain and at the gates of Moscow, I am always amazed at how just everything seemed to work out perfectly. I have a firm belief there was a divine hand in it, and whenever I study it I can't help but think of that verse: "Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed" (Job 38:11).

  • @HenryvKeiper Hey heroes, Nationalism, self-determination, & sovereignty died in 1945! You Brits were fooled into fighting a war for the establishment of a "McWorld". Churchill rebuffed Hitler's numerous attempts to end the fighting w/ Britain, & even offered to step down as head of state. Churchill would not hear it & insisted on waging catastrophic war. Sure, in the end you Brits can claim victory, but victory cost you your empire, sole superpower status, & it left you bankrupt.

  • @Wehrwolf2012 I'm not a Brit, yo, I'm a Yank.

  • @HenryvKeiper Of course you are, yanks are the most misinformed people on earth. I should know, because I'm a yank. Nearly everything you accept as a given truth is a lie that is used to enslave you. You don't know this because "the ultimate control is controlling someone w/o their knowledge".

  • @Wehrwolf2012 But how do you know that the idea that said given truth is a lie used to enslave you is not, in fact, a given truth that is a lie used to enslave you? Oh noes, up is down, left is right :( *implodes!*

  • @cheekyboy37 the story of the few who defended this island nation and ultimately the free world

  • @cheekyboy37 i would be more impressed if u did it alone and not with our american toys fuel and metal

  • How ironic his callsign is "Tomato eins" and........well.....1:53 explains it

  • @TalonMercenary LOL, tomato eins alright, all on his face!

  • "help yourself everybody theres no fighter escort" :) :) :)

  • love the bit when the music starts, you have to be british to understand

  • @TheDigit62 I'm American and I love the bit when the music starts :)

  • @HenryvKeiper point taken my friend

  • I agree

  • That dumbass at the end with a victory roll LOL .

  • @micklad11 I don't know if you've seen the entire film, but he actually gets put down by his commanding officer for that - so your comment is fairly accurate :)

  • @HenryvKeiper I have watched the whole film plenty of times , it is really the only older ww2 film i like and have seen loads of documentaries on the battle as well .

  • I've recently seen a documentary where a RAF vet said the 303 British machine gun was useless and described it as a peashooter compared to the ME109's 20mm cannon, bafflled how we inflicted so much damage on the Luftwaffe

  • Comment removed

  • @southlondon63 Apparently the Mk IIb variant with 2 x 20mm hispano cannon came into service in September 1940. The RAF must have fought most of the the battle with the 8 x.303's. wow.

  • @wks1978 The Mk Ib was only used by one or two squadrons however, as the early cannons were prone to jamming

  • @southlondon63 probably sheer number of guns. 8 deer rifles shooting at something will eventually make it break. everything after the first spits and hawks had cannons at least.

  • 01:08 Bad idea. Bombers shouldn't split-up- They should stay in one piece. Thus their limited gunners could support each other.

  • SPIT-FOYA!!!

  • @meganisationlubracat That's "Spit-Feuer!"

  • 1:52 my favorite part

By the way, why were the pilots mentioning Heinz Ketchup??

  • @Trashcansam123 I presume it's the name of the plane. You know, kinda like "Tomato Heinz to squadron, it's 3 minutes to target" or something like that.

  • @Trashcansam123 Codename of the commanding plane was Tomato Einz.

  • HOME AND TEA YEAA!!

  • il2 Sturmovik : Cliffs of Dover got me in the mood to watch this

  • Funny to see the spanish build HE 111 with Merlin engines. Major fault

  • @mcstaal Better that than a B-25 made to look like a 111

  • Forgot to mention that he was a Night Fighter pilot, shooting down British bombers. Actually, he shot down 57 aircraft at night and 15 during the day, flying conventional fighters. Was flying Bf109s and FW190s, during the day. I think that they shot down a few Spitfires, sir!

  • The Bf110 did well as a night fighter. My cousin Wilhelm flew them, along with the fighter version of the JU88 and he was quite successful (72 kills/57 at night).

  • did he shoot em while they were on the ground because no fuckin ju88 or bf110 would have lived with any spitfire, happen he just dreamt he shot down 72 planes eh hahaha

  • tomato einz unt alle: means tomato 1 to all

  • There was actually fighter support from bf 110's but they are no good as daylight fighter

  • gods speed england

  • And more than a squadron was stationed there grp 12 in the north had about 20% of the fighter strength..and group 13 in Scotland had several as well

  • Comment removed

  • As the Bf109's only has 10 minutes over London it it a wonder the Germans didn't think of using drop tanks. After all the Mustang and Lightnings couldn't have reached Berlin or stayed to too long over Germany without them. It's not as though they were a new idea.

  • @binaway

Funny how the RAF and USAAF didn't think of the idea sooner themselves either. Bomber command of the RAF suffered so much in the day raids they only did night raids, and the American B17's and B24's suffered tremendous losses in 1943. The BlackThursday in October 1943 is an example.

Also, nazi Germany needed all the fuel they could possibly spare for the 1941 invasion of the USSR. In fact Hitler admitted to Mannerheim in '42 that without the Romanian oil fields there'd be no invasion

  • How many gunners did the hienkel have? I've seen pictures with side guns fitted

  • Slight historical inaccuracy, the German bombers sent from Norway left their gunners behind to save weight!

  • The bombers split up and have no fighter escort. Fatal. For you Fritz the was is over!

  • Why the hell do they have no fighter escort?!?!?!

  • @StarCraftPilot they weren't expecting any fighter resistance.

  • These were heinkel squadrons coming from Norway to attack scotland and the industrial midlands. The Germans assumed that spitfire squadrons were concentrated in the south. They were wrong.

  • Die you Pashist Fig!

  • The german pilots were good but unlike the british they didnt have good leadership which may have been why they lost.britain also had good radar and communication

  • @Unstopablewrath and also unlike us Brits they are very unorganised! German fighters have 10 minutes over Britain cos of fuel.

  • @Unstopablewrath What? They had Adolf Galland at the helm, leading German ace during the battle of Britain!

  • The Germans lost so many Heinkles over there English targets due to no cover . The BF109 lacked range.Goring new of this issue yet nothing was done .The Heinkel He112 should have been allowed to mass produce, its range superior by far ,yet it was scrapped. So the English simply waited for the bf109 escorts to leave the Heinkles then attack. The English flatter themselves , the reality is that ,had the Germans a longer ranged fighter things would have been different.

  • @barbenH That right yeah - the Bf109s have 10 minutes over Britain so according to books about German aircraft. By the time the fighting in N. Africa started, the Bf109 was much improvised having extra fuel tanks under the aircraft.

Later in the war both sides improved their aircraft - The Yanks have a fighter plane that can fly longer called the Mustangs which was used to protect bombers - We Brits have similar aircraft.

  • @DavBlc7 The introduction of the P51 into the European theatre was a hugh trump card for the Allies. Longer range & able to protect Allied Bombers into Germany .Germany had no answer to the American conveyor belt, that kept on producing whilst German resources dwindled. The English had nothing to match the durable P51 there contribution through out the war was basically a supporting role. The Soviets & Americans were by far the greatest contributors to the war effort .

  • I think you will find later in ww2 the p51 fighter had a rolls royce merlin in it out of the british spitfire to gain greater range over germany and protect bombers

  • @michaelstarwars45 The D series Mustang had the Packard engine , more or less a Merlin, built in the States though. If a Mustang was shot down , then in my opinion ,it was the inexperience of the Pilot; the complete fighter plane of its era.The Mustangs range was helped by the use of drop tanks.

  • @barbenH The Mustang had a Merlin in it since the P-51B

  • @barbenH who had the biggest navy in the world at the time? prick BRITIAN thats who, if we lost the battle of britian no D-Day, no liberaton of weston europe, germany would have had more time to invade russia before the winter sets in and could have easily reached moscow before december, end of the easten war Germany wins, you fucking ignorant yank, yeah you keep telling yourself England had a supporting role in WW2.

  • @cpj93070 I am a New Zealander not a "Yank"! You really need to read up on the history of the war, especially the Western front. I have , for the past 30 years.Your foul language suggests you are of lower intelligence, perhaps single digit IQ?

  • @barbenH oh so now you agree britian didnt have a backseat in the war you joined the war because we did your part of the BRITISH EMPIRE, PRICK you desend from us so do learn up on your history dude.

  • @cpj93070 Don`t waste my time.

  • @barbenH lol i love it when im right.

  • @cpj93070 What part of shit hole UK do you live in? Are all poms blow-arses? You eeeeeee-bahhhhh gumm lad! So what broken english dialect do you speak?Your profile picture suggests that you are half Pakistani,Did your Mum like it black? The English were NOTHING in WW2 ; The mighty Russians were the biggest contributors followed by the USA.

  • @barbenH U FUCKING COCKSUCKING FAGGOT, go shag a sheep you Kiwi fucking twat, thats all you new zealenders do lol shag sheep all day long look how big your countr'y is twat WE OWN YOU BITCH bow down before us motherfucker, we were up there with russia and the fat yanks so shut the fuck up asshole lol.

  • WAR; it's FANTASTIC!

  • lol @ break it off, home & tea.. for once you deserve it:)

  • honor a la luftwaffe

    luftwaffe honor

    Luftwaffe Ehre

  • The English pilots were good, as were the Polish pilots who participated, not to forget the German pilots. During the Air battle for England.

  • @EJLSWE

    And Czech pilots ;-)

  • great movie

  • Hurracaines we're great Heinkel bomber killers too.

  • thank god Fatso goring was a fool, god bless the RAF

  • God bless the RAF

  • I believe there are still a few Heinkels in service with some modern airforces; Spain i think

  • @TalonMercenary Sadly, they're all gone. The last flyable He 111 crashed back in 2004.

  • The real issue the British pilots had was the Browining .303 guns all eight when fired only caused severe damage when the target was realy close , they only had 10 seconds or so of button pressing then they were out of ammo. The German escort fighters had cannons and could shoot at longer distances, but theire flying / battle time was short lived due to fuel they carried.

British pilots were new bies , only a few were experienced and battle training was very short indeed .

  • 1:53 That's what happens when you eat too much Heinz ketchup you fucking jerry!

  • @AwesomeSauce64 Dude, that was my grandpa :(

  • @HenryvKeiper

You have the best comments ever

  • @HenryvKeiper My Grandpa shot to Spitfire with a Flak :D

  • @HenryvKeiper really

  • @wolfgagger No, I was kidding :P

  • @AwesomeSauce64 tomata one

  • @AwesomeSauce64 Read A British Book called Fighter by Day, he was the main quartermaster for Brits, very clearly, the Brits lost 1680 Spitifres and Hurricans and Germans only lost 120 ME 109, that's sad, considering 10-15 min fight time and 60 % of those ran out of gas, luckily it was poor leadership by that idiot gorpig, but the Americans and Brits suffered the same in the beginning also, but not for entire war. it took 7000 rounds to down a Heinkel 5 -20 rounds to drop any allied heavy

  • @MrBritdog2 You are talking absolute rubbish, this is concerning the Battle of Britain. How did the Brits lose when the whole strategy was to stop German invasion, the Germans had far more aircraft yet failed in their mission. Quite clearly the RAF were victors. No point mentioning America, they only had 9 Battle of Britain pilots, we are far more thankful to the Poles, Czechs and Commonwealth allies.

People don't half talk some crap on here just because they have read one book!

  • @AwesomeSauce64 Jerry had the best planes , Tommy.

  • @MisterMarcoX debatable.

  • @AwesomeSauce64 that was very rude

  • @thekill847 Yeah, but the Nazi's were dicks.

  • @AwesomeSauce64 right about that

  • @AwesomeSauce64 damm straight lol

  • @AwesomeSauce64 hahaha too right!!!

  • 1:54 = red paint

  • @FanOfDnB

This film is from 1969 ;-)

  • @celticthunder10 someone gets shot in the face and it looks a heck of a lot like red paint. There are really fake sound effects. I dont think the film was made to be realistic, somehow

  • You really have to respect the brits because they did not give up even though they had so few compared to the Luftwaffe

  • @celticthunder10

Wikipedia: 15 August was "The Greatest Day" when the Luftwaffe mounted the largest number of sorties of the campaign. Luftflotte 5 attacked the north of England. Believing Fighter Command strength to be concentrated in the south, raiding forces from Denmark and Norway ran into unexpectedly strong resistance. Inadequately escorted by Bf 110s, bombers were shot down in large numbers. As a result of the casualties, Luftflotte 5 did not appear in strength again in the campaign.

  • At the end of the BoB. Britons did'nt know that they lost and the Huns didn't know that they won. Cheers

  • This was Luftflotte 5 flying from bases in Norway, they actually did have a fighter escort of Me110's with their rear gunner removed to save on weight, which was a fatal mistake.

  • Excellent video this film was a true testament to the sacrifices made by many young men on both sides of the conflict. As much as hollywood would like to portray that Ben Affleck won the BOB single handed historical fact shows us otherwise. It takes a lot of courage to face the things those young men faced everyday and I for one will always have respect for them after all they gave their tomorrow so that we could have our day and stopped the world falling under the whim of a mad man.

  • it would be obvious that the Heinkel He111 without fighter protection would be an easy target to fighter planes such as Spitfire & Hurricane. Any bomber would have a hard time, even the B-17 equipped with 12-17 50 cal machine guns for protection suffered tremendous losses during their missions over Germany since the fighters at that time can't escort all the way. That changed when P-51 Mustang became operational. This was what the Luftwaffe lacked also, a fighter that could escort all the way.

  • In hindsight, the bombers should have approached the objective below radar coverage and departed high and fast, taking advantage of the Spitfire's (Hurricanes, more likely) short range.

  • @westlock

They'd have still got mauled. A Heinkel wouldn't be able to out-climb a Spitfire, even if it WAS given a head-start...

  • @steffankim In the case of there being no fighter escort, and given the bombers are Heinkel He111s which were obsolete even during the battle, plus the fact that its portrayed as a surprise attack...actually the chances were pretty reasonable that the spitfires wouldn't have sustained any casualties in reality. With a load of Bf109s swarming around of course things would have been different...

  • @steffankim The He111 was badly under gunned. With out fighter escort it was a sitting duck.

  • @kolchack55 did some have side gunners as well?

  • @skintrade No. One of the major short comings of the luftwaffe was the lack of a decent heavy bomber.

  • @kolchack55 thats exactly what the Focke Wulf 200 should have been used for

  • @steffankim Heinkels are like shooting fish in a barrell

  • @Ismalith

In one of the northern raids (which this scene portrays) the RAF suffered virtually NO losses against the Luftwaffe, who'd flown from Norway with inadequate fighter escort. Look it up.

  • @DazDaMan Not inadequate escort....No escort thanks to the range limitations of Luftwaffe fighters and the misjudgements about the strength of RAF.

  • @VeeGlo Umm, look it up. The Norwegian bomber raid depicted in the film had fighter escort in real life - Messerschmitt Bf110Ds. But, because they couldn't get a flying '110 (and weren't going to use models), the film company did without them.

  • @DazDaMan The messerschmidt 110 was a complete fail as bomber escort, later in the battle it was escorted itself by 109's

  • @Ismalith ...and the BRITON, bright spark.

  • @Ismalith Oh do pay attention, please! A lot of Nazi Heinkel 111/Messerschmidt 110 light bombers tried to attack Northern England without any fighter escort. They were massacred by several squadrons of spitfires/hurricanes. Any questions?

  • @Ismalith your saying its a stupid message that a spitfire didnt get shot down when they could reach speeds of around 362 mph and were designed for dog fights against a bomber which sole purpose was to bomb and not to take on high speed fighters.

  • @Reverbful

Sure the HE111 hadn´t a real change agains Spitfires, but over the Channel the german bombers never fly alone until 1943.

The german escortes turns over britain, because of too short range.

  • @Ismalith They weren't over the channel. They're over the north sea

  • @TopGunSGA

Why north sea, wich targets should they attack here?

  • @Ismalith They were heading to the north of England and Scottland

  • @TopGunSGA

Ok then is channel wrong, but there still the question why the bombers fly without escord although they are still in the range from BF109 hosts.

  • @Ismalith The He-111s in the video would have been flying from Norway. The Germans didn't have any 109s there though. The 109 only had enough fuel for about 30 minutes over London, the northern raids were well beyond their range. In reality the bombers would have been escorted by Bf-110s, but there weren't any 110s flyable at the time or now for that matter

  • @TopGunSGA

Remember the line in the film? Not even a spitfire can be in two places at once!

  • @Ismalith the reason they came across the north sea was to hit scotland ,,the first city bombed in britian

was glasgow because of the clyde shipyards..to try and disrupt the shipbuilding

as the wanted to curtail the alantic convoys

  • tally ho chaps

  • Does anyone else like the spitfire/ hurricane victory roll?

  • God bless the Royal Air Force!!!

  • ME 262 ftw...

  • german losse in battle of britain 1550 aeroplanes 2000 pilots killed 500 captured,, result a new generation of english aircrafts

  • 1:53 LOL. Now I know why no movies before the 1970s were rated R. There's no way kids will believe things that fake!

  • The Mustang was also a British design too.

  • @DaveAtherton Mustang designed by North American Aviation at the request of the British Purchasing Commission.

  • @VeeGlo and they did not like the mustang

  • @DaveAtherton no it was built for britain, the only thing brittish on a mustang is it's rolles royce merlin v12 in line engine

  • @packr72

And engines are the main thing on a plane, so you could say the P51 is a brithis plane.

  • @Ismalith designed by north american aviation, not hawker, not supermarine, not dehaviland, NORTH AMERICAN, flown by american pilots, firing browning .50 cal guns

  • @packr72 The Mustang was used by the RAF, RCAF, RAAF and the RNZAF to name but a handful, so not just American pilots. Yes it was designed by North American Aviation, but it was designed to meet an RAF specification, not an American one

  • @packr72 ...AND powered by an English Rolls Royce engine!

  • @packr72 Most of the merlin engined Mustangs used the licensed built version of the Rolls-Royce product from the Packard Motor Co. Before the end of WW2, Packard reengineered and improved the Merlin and ended up supplying engines back to Britain for use a/c like the Lancaster.

  • ENGLAND FOREVER

  • Thumbs up who gets a lump in their throat when the theme music starts!!!

The Heinkels going on to the North Sea was done by Radio Controlled models. They had to insert the shot of bullets hitting the cables to give a reason for the R/C antennae protruding out the back in a long shot.

  • Can't see a B17 carrying a 22,000lb bomb!!! Hail the Lancaster!!!

  • @anglosimon Hehehe! B-17, the 4 engined MEDIUM bomber :D :D :D

  • More Realastic then todays CGI O_o
