last year of wml. the smothers brothers would go on to piss off the censors quite a bit, mostly of tommy's doing. constantly trying to get away with as much political stuff they could. the country was coming apart in 68-70 and you'd think by television programming at the time america was still ozzy and harriet. tommy smothers is one of the greats!
The original Smothers Brothers Show was a half hour sitcom where Tom played an angel sent to earth to help his brother Dick. It was terrible, and was canceled after one season. CBS still had them under contract, so they gave them a mid-season replacement hour variety series. CBS had tried many things on Sundays following Ed Sullivan from 9-10 PM and nothing clicked, so CBS felt they had nothing to lose. The show's success surprised everyone at CBS.
As I was watching this all the sudden I felt like I was watching 101 Dalmatians...actually it was like I was IN 101 Dalmatians, this show is too much like that sow the criminals watch....
gosh, I remember watching this LIVE when I was 12 years old.....I remember when Bennett Cerf asked if "they ever get smothered by the fans around you"..... I can't believe it was already 42 years ago that this show was originally aired! And now since that time, John Daly, Bennett Cerf, Arlene Frances, & Steve Allen are all deceased! How time flies!!

I see that shameless promotion isn't a modern invention. Oh by the way, our mystery guests will be starting their new show on CBS next week.
They were one of the most overrated act of all time. They were darlings of the critics because they were one of the first openly politically left-leaning shows on TV.
giant at the networks decided that no one would ever want to see those shows again so
they were recorded over and the orignal color
versions were lost forever. What GSN and others have now are the old black & white kinascopes that were saved. This not only happened to WML? but the origianl Hollywood
"Brother, tear your mask off." Steve Allen was an absolute riot!!

I actually had the pleasure of meeting Dick and Tom a few years ago, and I have an autographed album to prove it.

Great old TV show. I wish they still had shows like this on TV. They were a lot of fun.
I love youtube for this reason - FLASHBACKS!

I'd never heard of them before seeing them on youtube, and I still think they're hilarious.

Quite a find. The following week Tom and Dick would topple the Cartwright clan right off that NBC peacock.
What a delight to see actress dina merrill on the panel. She has always handled herself with grace and a beautiful smile.

That was cute! The panelists were pretty sharp!

Actually, WHAT'S MY LINE? was supposed to be recorded live, and supposed to be in color.
dalabaso428 3 years ago
The final 2 years of CBS' What's My Line was
recorded in color, but like many of the great
shows of the '60s and '70s someone mental
giant at the networks decided that no one would ever want to see those shows again so
they were recorded over and the orignal color
versions were lost forever. What GSN and others have now are the old black & white kinascopes that were saved. This not only happened to WML? but the origianl Hollywood
Squares & Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.
