THANK YOU Marc for mentioning conspiracy theorists using the same bullshit no logic. I'm tired of conspiracy nutjobs getting a free pass on this stuff. Same ignorant people, different fascinations.
@MeyerL10 "If the world all is a big nothing, and If I didn't have religion holding me back, I would go Machiavellian and just say "fuck everyone, me first!" That's why so many people get into politics.
actually a lot of that stuff has been proven. Science and Christianity exist as an equal. It is not complete ignorant, one could say you are ignorant for not lending the other check to be slaped. More then an attack on religon its an attack on christianity. There is balance in science and christianity. BOth have things that remain un-seeable, and therefore people say both have things unproven. If we were all psycho in the brain we would have completion.
It's a dangerous thing to group every person that believes in God into a category where we all act the same way. I'm a Christian and there's plenty of people that believe in God that I know that make me bash my head into a wall. As for atheists, there's probably a lot of people that give them a bad name too.
I gave up on Christianity when I was able to process data logistically on my own and took fear out of the equation. I have no problem with a majority of the moral lessons taught in bible, but today, many of the ancient Christian rules and 'God's commandments' are obsolete and just wrong, (slavery, women can't teach men, earth is flat, man co-existed with dinosaurs, earth is only 7000 years old etc etc.) and simply ignored, even by the most fanatical Christian.
@electricmaster23, I'm afraid some Christians do in fact believe that man co-existed with dinosaurs and that the world is only 6000 years old. Look up the "Creation Museum". It has a model of a triceratops with a saddle on it. I'm not sure about the flat-earth thing, but there was a recent conference about Geocentrism called "Galileo was wrong". It's pretty sad.
anyway, i subscribed to the maron podcast last year when it came out and have listened to every episode. so i know about the infamous creation museum lol. peace
That was a very intelligent way of putting it. I would like to be able to see two sides of such an argument without biased opinion or sensitive reluctance. I would like to sit perfectly in the middle. I guess such an ability would be un human. For the fact that all knowledge is unknown is the soul reason this argument is even in existence.
@DomTrentproductions, if you want to see such an argument there are plenty of places you can find them. There's a public access TV show made in Austin, Texas called "The Atheist Experience". Theists are encouraged to call in and say "what they believe and why" and the hosts of the show then respond. The callers are often incoherent and their argumentation is poor. You can find many clips of it on youtube. Most religious people don't believe in the sophisticated apologists variety of religion.

These guys are both fucking assholes. I know more science than both of them. I personally dont know if i really believe in god. But thats not the point! Thats what makes people so special and great. We can do more good with just our mind and imagination than the fact s that show us how apparently alone we all are.
@DomTrentproductions, haven't you ever talked to religious people who talk the way these two describe? Sure there are sophisticated religious thinkers, including scientists, but their criticisms stand when applied to the type of people they're referring to. They do paint theists with too broad a brush, but as far as the "just believe and don't worry about the arguments against it" attitude, I think what they say stands. The problem is the lack of thought, religion is just the result of that.
I think Marc Maron really hit it on the head, with one's propensity for religious buy-in basically being about how overwhelmed you are with the randomness of the world, and how uncomfortable it makes you.
@theinquisitor no, I was just trolling. But on a serious note, you seem to make very broad generalizations. That's not good. Because it makes an impression that all religious people are equally retarded (when you made an examples on this video). Some are biggots, some are just plain stupid, many believe just because it is a tradition or has some "culture value", some are very intelligent and usually believe in belief (if that makes sense).
@MaikUniversum, well they're not really my generalisations, it's just from a podcast I listen to that I found amusing. I think it does apply to a lot of people, but not all. Smart people are just better at bullshitting themselves. Regardless of whether these people are stupid, they believe stupid things and for stupid reasons. So that seems stupid to me. No-one would quibble about how stupid this stuff is if it weren't traditional and cultural. One person believing this would be crazy.
@theinquisitor sorry, it wasn't yours, my mistake. But anyway, that doesn't mean it is ok to make generalizations like they did in this podcast. It only will make atheists look like biggots. And not believing in religion (god) doesn't mean a person doesn't believe in other stupid things. Religion is just one of them. And actually, if a person keeps his woo-woo to himself, I don't care about it. The problem arise when people try to promote their madness. Like politicians do, for example.
@MaikUniversum, do you not see the irony in criticising these guys for making generalisations about theists because it will make other people make generalisations about atheists? If it isn't valid to judge all theists stupid because some of them are, then it's not valid to just all atheists bigots because some of them are.
Anyway, I don't think criticism is equivalent to bigotry, and it's precisely because religion is pushed into the public arena that it needs to be harshly criticised.
@theinquisitor I don't see irony, because it doesn't matter who make generalizations, theists or atheists, it's equaly bad and not very good tactic to prove your point. That's it. Criticism is no way a biggotry. Rational criticism is useful for promoting healthy view of reality, however, making such broad generalizations is not what I call rational criticism. It's just rant to make religious people look retarded.
@MaikUniversum, some things don't deserve rational criticism. They deserve ridicule. It's like what Sam Harris says, if someone makes the claim that Elvis is still alive, this claim isn't met with respect but with ill-concealed laughter. That's appropriate. But religion seems to be able to make equally absurd claims and not be treated as ridiculous. People who say shit like, "well God made the scientists" don't deserve rational criticism, they deserve derision.
Funny stuff, although I wouldn't say anyone who believes is stupid. There are a lot of reasons why people believe. Fear is probably the main one. Religions have evolved to a point where their affect on the human mind is just so strong, that when you are indoctrinated as a child, in many cases that indoctrination will simply not go away despite a person having common sense and being rational in other areas of their life.
@Deathinmusic, indeed, although I think the particular theist Bill was talking about was in fact stupid. Most people are stupid and Bill is no rocket scientist himself. Smarter people just have better ways of rationalising their stupid beliefs. It is possible for smart people to believe stupid things, that's one of the most important lessons of rational skepticism. Fear is indeed a powerful motivator and rationality doesn't come naturally to us. Superstition is the more natural mode of thought.

@MeyerL10 Marc Maron is great, and Christianity did not invent the golden rule. Far from it.
And religion is the only thing keeping you from being an asshole? Sorry, but that alone makes you an asshole.
