"He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." For those of you who don't get it commandments of men are those not found in the scriptures.
Suggesting that because the early church recieved traditions from the apostles that we should recieve them from later christian leaders is just like saying that because Israel recieved commandments from Moses and the prophets the Jews in Jesus's should have recieved traditions from their religious leaders. Of course the blind leaders in Jesus's day believed this. They believed that their traditions though not from scipture were just as authoritative as those in scripture
Note in 2 Thess 2:15 Pauls to "hold the traditions which ye >have been< taught" Have been taught means that those traditions had already been established. So it becomes clear from "havew been taught", "our epistles", and the tradition which he received of us", that Paul was referring to traditions established by himself and the other Apostles. To suggest that he meant the extra-scriptural traditions found in both catholic and protestant sects is a deceitful lie.
1. The apostles taught to observe traditions from themselves not just anyone. "Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. 2 Thess 2:15
" Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us" 2 Thess 3:6
if canon scripture is a collection of God inspired letters and doctrine , why is it that the canon was not expanded at following councils with church father writings ?
If i am reading you correctly the Church Fathers writings were not inspired as we could would consider the Bible to be. Much of what they wrote came from the inspired word and the things they defended such as the Deity of Jesus and the Holy Spirit came from God's word. That is not to say they were not inspired to write things but not in the same way the Bible was inspired. One of teh reasons for the Canon of the Bible was to prevent such writings from becoming Canon. Hope that helps.
Also remember that the writers of the Bible were Apostles. No such people existed after the death of the last Apostle. I don't know of any Church that accepts any other writings except those of the Apostles. I am not aware of any anyway.
could someone define scripture only doctrine . i define it as scripture being the measuring stick such as tradition is acceptable only if backed by scripture . also i define tradition as non canon scripture or writings such as church fathers beyond second generation after Christ .
I will deal with that in my next video. It is something I haven't touched on yet. I wanted to get a few things out of the way with these videos on Sola Scriptura before I addressed the text people use for the Doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Thanks
for me i think it is a familiarity issue . the nt canon is letters from those who either were in direct contact with Christ or those who were under a person who had direct contact with Christ .
i support tradition that is supported directly by scripture . im sorry , but i cannot at this point support certain dogmas that come from a church fathers interpretation of the gospel . also some dogmas come from areas of heavy gnostic influence . while filtered they still leave me wondering .
I hear what you are saying and still study them myself. The main thing I tr to do is to trace things back to the source. The source of many things people thing Catholics believe isn't veryt reliable. But apart from that any tradition must be comapred to teh Bible. Thanks
They were either ignorant, or they manipulating it to suit their own will, & ignored the will of God.
Mk 3:35 whosoever "shall do the will of God", he is my brother, & my sister, and mother.
Rom 12:2 be not conformed to this world; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, & the acceptable, and the perfect "will of God."
Matt 6:9-10 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come. "Thy will" be done on earth as it is in heaven.

This was how Jesus felt about that
"He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." For those of you who don't get it commandments of men are those not found in the scriptures.
