I was worried when I heard FUNi was dubbing EVA but It's a good thing they got the old VA's to make a come back. My only worry now is weather or not they make decent Boxart for the Eva DVD's. FUNi tends to only make thin card board cases for there DVD's and no good boxart... My Ouran high and one Piece DVD's look so naked.....

Its not coming out in the states until November 10 this year, FUNimation sent the fansubbers a cease and desist letter you can still find links, i just can't remember where sorry about that.

Oh, BTW. Back in the day when I was shooting my documentary about anime culture, I chatted with Matt Greenfield and was told that WETA workshop recomended that they do Eva the live action movie right. What Richard Tailor meant was, expensive. ADV did not have enough money at the time so they shelved Eva Live Action until later. So, they have been selling and gaining capital in the mean time. But frok what I sensed from Matt, don't count on it to be filmed anytime in the next 5-10 years.

I've been watching anime since the 70's. I picked up a raw version of Evangelion (original series) in the early 90's and a fansub on vhs later on and I thought to myself, this thing is gonna be huge. Sure enough, later, when ADV picked up this title it was. It's nice being right sometimes. :D

I liked the retelling on the most part.

I do think that some things, mainly the fact that they show Lilith so soon and that even Misato already knows that it is Lilith as opposed to Adam, are a big change that make things a little to compressed and perhaps even too simple.

The new Ramiel sequence finally does justice to one of the most incredible angels, and the music is great.

I just hope they don't dumb down the plot just because they are retelling it. NGE was near perfect as it was...

Yes , they are going to dumb down the plot, that was one of the main purposes of the retelling along with modernizing. This would make evangelion more accessible for non-fan audience

And Ramiel was just incredible... gave me the chills

Dude, what blew my mind was when Shinji refused to fight, Misato took him down to central dogma to see lilith, and set the record straight. In the series, Seele and part of Nerv was hiding Lilith. She didnt even find out till the end of the series when she was shadowing Kaji.

I was hoping this would add more depth to the original series, not change it--cept for the endings. The other 2 were BS and sad. Gotta see Shinji get off his ass and back up Asuka right when shes about to die.

I actually thought they edited all of the episodes into a single movie fairly seamlessly, the humor wasn't a huge loss. My biggest problem, which you didn't touch on at all, was how they revealed Lillith. It was like they just needed something big to top everything off with. But instead, it was like, "lets take the elevator down to see the source of ALL HUMANITY...well, there it is, tada!" It was very anticlimactic for such a huge scene, they could've got way more out of it. They threw it away.

I did enjoy the beautiful animation though. Ramiel was just... wow. Big plus on that.

I know what you mean. That added to the revelation that Kaworu was a tool of SEELE right at the end was a real let down. It seems like they're glossing over way too much in an attempt to shoehorn new characters/EVA's into relatively short screen time they have over the course of the 4 films. I hope it gets better.

When I first saw you video I thought that you had underrated this anime.

I just finish it. The plot was predicable and that cause it to be a little boring for me. But in my opinion the movie was better than the original episodes, because everything moves so rapidly.

The animation was really good but maybe I was expecting something like Mushishi.

7/10. For a remake it was great.

Today I watched the movie, and I really liked it, I understood the series back then and I understand these rebuild movies now. People complain that most jokes are gone for this re telling of the story, but I think that`s ok, creater just tried to keep focused on darker more movie like atmosphere for the movie theater, and I think they did it well, specially the ending. It`s kinda like what they did with Rurouni Kenshin OVAs, Tenku no Escaflowne and other animes that have been remade.

there was a FEW things I didn't like about the first movie. I thought the scene where Shinji sees Unit1's eye repairing itself and start freaking out was PRETTY IMPORTANT, but I was dissapointed they cut that out. I didn't like the way they transition some of the stuff, like how Shinji and Toji and them become friends, they shouldn't have cut out as much stuff when shinji's deciding to leave or not. that's it though.

To pinoypr1d3: There r plenty of added scenes even in the firsts minutes of this movie, and the visual and sound FX have been improved enormously! Didnt u pay any attention on the UN fire power or anything else? seriously, this Evangelion movie blew me away watching it on a home cinematic.

And for u haters: plz dont judge Rebuild from wacthing it on a crappy low resolution youtube screen. It is the stunning effects and the visual details that makes this movie exceptional compared to the series.

I am not a hater, but I thought the film was a mediocre disappointment. It had nothing to do with the animation or any of that, it felt redundant storywise.....Thats my issue is with repetitiveness of the story, and it felt badly edited....I will say that the second half of the film is very good, but the first half is very weak....

thanks for the review....i saw the first couple of minutes of this movie(but it was subbed in fucking spanish)and got to the point when i thought i was watching the 1st ep of the series because most of the scenes were left unchange and or nothing was added in it and the art and lighting looked closely the same as the series...but anyway thanks for the review

I personally thought the movie was rather poor. Great music and great animation doesn't make a "Rebuild". It should have been an entirely different universe from the original Evangelion... but instead, we get a movie that just feels like a giant piece of fan-service to usher in the dawn of Anno's new animation company. It has Star Wars Special Edition written all over it. Hope the second film turns out better then this.

lol that was my two year old. If you never seen Evangelion, I reccomend you see the series first before you see anything else as far as it comes to evangelion. The series is brilliant, but this movie is a retelling of that series or the first part and its ok...but the series rocks!

I've just seen the movie, right here on YT. The audio/video quality was awful of course, but that wasn't a factor and the movie was dissapointing to say the least. Your review its right on the money. The first half its barely comprehensible for someone who's not familiarized with the concept. And what happened with the voice actors during the last 10 years?! They sound completly off. Excepting the last battle, as an Evangelion fan, I realy realy hope the do better on the next film. 6 out of 10

Glad you agree, I liked the ending to this film alot and how they introduced Kaworu. Glad you could see though that the first half was not good at all...but, did you see the previews for the next film? In the bootleg I saw those and the second part looks alot more promising as there seems to be alot more new stuff as opposed to just redundant stuff as we saw in this film.

One of the primary factors in enjoying NGE is the character development. Voice and inflection influence one's perception of the characters personality. That's something that is difficult to perceive via subtitles. To summarize its important to be captivated by a film. Watching a camera recorded video on a computer screen with fan-subs can seriously harm the experience. It would be nice however if you could elaborate more on the differences between the original series.

I know how exactly to enjoy Eva, I am not stupid by any means....my issue with the movie was that it felt redundant and repetitive. The first half was quite boring to be honest, I will give you an example. Imagine the first episode of eva, with alot of edits...yes a lot of edits. Yes I elaborate on the differences of Eva in the video. Eva the series and EoE and even Death were fantastic for characterization, this on the other hand felt redundant in a very weak first half....

Yea Lilith was revealed alot sooner then she was in the original series...I think it was in the late teens that she was revealed to even the audience in the original series.

i just noticed that there are 2 liliths shown at the end well... one in the begining looks like sachiels face but the other one is on the moon with its original mask....and kaworu says something like "you still havent changed" well this is going to be more shown in 2.0 which is coming out this year i think in japan.i go with you magus because the first have to me was crap but the second half was soo good i couldnt stop watching it.i give it a 7.5 :D

I haven't watched it yet. I don't think many people watched it yet which is why you don't see reviews yet. I'm probably going to wait until all the new movies to come out to see them. I'd like to see them in one sitting when I get the chance.

The number one thing I'm interested in is who shot Kaji and want to see if the new movies will reveal that. Especially when he's my favorite character.

Great review, Rebuild also disappointed me since I watched the whole version right before I saw the movie to refresh myself... and it felt like I was watching exactly what I just went over with some scenes removed.

Man you should download a series of Doujinshis called "Evangelion RE-TAKE" If you haven't read it yet. Even though its a doujin and has a few sex scenes it (imho) gives the series the best ending yet.

Yea, thats what I felt the first half of the movie was like..though what sort of saved the movie for me was the stronger second half since it had more of the new scenes and the fight at the end was done. The scene with Kaworu was interesting, but I agree it was sadly rather disappointing. I did get to see the previews to the second movie, and it looks intersting. Lets hope the second piece is much better.
