The two forms of radioactive iodine that are set free at Fukushima have a half-life (the time until the they lose half their radiation) of 24 hours (iodine-133) and 8 days (iodine-131). By the time they reach the US they will have lost most of their radioactivity, no to mention that it will be heavily thinned out through the wind.

It is much more dangerous to blindly supplement high doses of iodide, that can harm your thyroid and wreak havoc with your hormones.

@skybirdbird good advice because now there are reports that the iodine 131 levels, in drinking water, in some states are many times over the official 'safe' limit, and we have also had readings in the UK. The problem is that the emissions from the fukushima plant are constant, and, as yet, we do not know when they will cease. . which makes the claims by some authorities that everthing is OK, and the levels will be gone in a couple of months, a tad ridiculous.

You cant buy Potassium Iodide. All my friends that are pharmacists across the United States say they were ordered by the GOVT to return to distributor. Shouldnt we be prepared for the worst? Just wait 10 years and studies will show increase in cancer rates in California's and then it's too late.

@Customademan Its really hard to mix the 2. If you have a lab and your a chemist you may have more luck but its better to have the real deal. Only take it if you know you're in immediate danger by checking RadNet (which for some reason impossible at this time to view online) If you go to EPA website and try to see RadNet readings, you first join, but its not allowing to join for some reason. Ebay has it for high prices but its better to be safe than sorry. Fresh Rosemary Teas good, try it.

@Customademan BTW, I dont want to discourage you. Nothing is impossible. It's just difficult creating the molecular bond. Simple Example: 1 oxygen and 2 hydrogen molecules bond make H20(water) In order to make a snow flake, you need freezing temperature and more bonding. So each of the 2 hydrogens from H20 will separately bond with an additional Hydrogen molecule over and over again creating a repeating Hexagon shape grid like pattern which is a snow flake. It sounds like the Rosemary is the safest one. I ended up buying some an hour ago. The three questions that I'm trying to find out are: how much is safe to take, how much do you need to take to get the protective benefits, and then what does it have in it that makes it protective against radiation.

With kelp you would want to use Kambu not Nori. Nori is much lower in Iodine and also has bromine so it is not as effective. Kambu (Kelp) is VERY high in iodine, BUT it has been used to induce labor so you have to be really careful with that. You can also get very ill and destroy a thyroid if you take too much iodine so be VERY careful.

@1112223333111 iodide is a pill you swallow... you can put an iodine solution on your skin... you do not want to take iodine solution internally... they are similar...but not the same...

I am in the UK, cannot find any potassium iodide for sale anywhere, all sold out wherever I look. I went for a natural option having done a little research. I found the following if this is any help to people also having trouble finding potassium iodide/iodate: The brand name is 'NOW' and I ordered 1 - Kelp, NATURAL IODINE, 150mcg x200 Vegetarian tabs and it advised to take these combined with the other product I bought - 'Thyroid Energy' x90 Vcaps. Hope this is of use to anyone out there.

@ChunkyDesperado i am not sure of doses.... you can get kelp (seaweed) raw or dried... as food and as capsules.. i think it is also in miso... rosemary i have heard you drink as a tea... i have also heard you can get an iodine solution such as betodine... you DO NOT take this internally... but you can put it on your skin... i think the recommend the abdomen... it can also be absorbed as a vaginal douche... i am sorry but i do not know the dosages.. try googeling it... best to you....

Amazing how they are out of stock on everything (even online), but I found a place 20 miles away from where I live that had some kelp so I drove there this morning & go their last 3 bottles. When I went into the pharmacy last night looking, they said I was the 3rd person in there that day looking for the same things (PI, kelp, etc). They didn't know why so I explained to them the sudden interest & explained things that I've learned about it. They were so interested in hearing about it; glad :)

put iodine tincture or betadine now on your pet's ears, rub it on your stomach..there are even things called betadine vaginal suppositories and studies show that it IS taken up in the bloodstream readily...it will protect some glands, but potassium iodide is needed for the thyroid.

I tried to find potassium iodide all day. Most all online I see are GONE, as well as locally and I live on the east coast. I looked for hours. I did buy kelp today which I hear is just as good. The dosage is recommended at 120mcg per day. You can buy kelp with a higher dosage, your body will simply not absorb the rest.. At least get the Kelp while you can because this too will be gone in no time all across the US when people learn about it!

I ordered mine on line early, and then went back to the site and they were sold out. I went to my local pharm, and they ordered it for me, I come home the phone rang and they told me they couldn't get it. But I need the dosage information, because it can be very dangerous ingested incorrectly. I was looking at geiger counters, wonder if that web site, is accurate? I know individual people do the testing. So the site should be accurate. But then, what if no internet. Do your homework NOW peeps!
