Palestine was a mandate, basically one more British colony. The Arab poulation relentlessly harassed the Jews, so we fought back. The British wanted to wash their hands of the bloodshed on their soil, so they told the UN to pick an outcome. The UN voted to give the Jews a country, and on May 14, 1948 the last British forces departed.
The Jews fought against the Arabs, and somehow they won. And winner took a lot. But had to give back much.
