It is my understanding that only Blu-ray will output 1080i video and uncompressed 7.1 stereo sound. How can any wireless mobile phone output this amount of data when my wired cable connection or satellite cannot?

He said remote controls are NOT universal yet. Remember that the phones are using what is an essentially connection agnostic system, so it is less likely they will implement their own company's interconnection system. Besides, it means you'll need to buy a new TV :P
I gotta question I have the EVO 3D and I'm on amazon and they have a cord called GTMax Micro HDMI to HDMI Male Cable.....and I wanted to kno if this was the right cable b4 i order it
Got my MHL Adapter for my EVO 3D today.. love it.. the only thing I can't figure out is how to use my tv's remote to control the phone while it's connected.. anyone have any experience with it yet?
@torosax I think you're missing the point, the MHL adapter strips off the MHL component, making it just HDMI. If you had a MHL TV it would work as described with the HTC phone.
The official Samsung HDMI adapter doesn't look to be out for quite a while yet but there's one by BizLite over at Mobile Fun that should be in over the next fortnight (website says 9-14 days)
Cheaper than the official one too. Agreed that it's quite annoying having no TV-out on the 3.5mm jack!
@anijin It might be slightly more expensive at the start, when only 1 company might be making this MHL adaptor or MHL cable, but I think this is a standard and as more MHL devices come out, the third party $5 MHL cables and adaptors in every store shouldn't be far away.
@Charbax You can pick MHL adaptors up off eBay for about $10 now. As for @anjin's "Non MHL compatible" TVs, that'd imply "Without HDMI input" as the output signal is standard HDMI, in which case you've got bigger problems.
@anijin Don't worry, when one company throws an adapter and the cable into the box with the phone, they all will. Besides eBay will be full of cheap alternatives in no time. The most important thing is that there is now a standard MHL that many companies agreed to and the beauty of this standard is that it integrated into the microUSB port, meaning less ports on the phone.
@anijin Quit your complaining. SGS2 doesn't have a global launch yet. YOU search Google Expansys, they have the MHL adaptor for 12.99 GBP free shipping as I write this, with about 3 week ETA. The Samsung Infuse 4G comes with the MHL adaptor in box.
You'll see, in a month more, it will overspill onto eBay China sales for under 5 GBP.
@rao76 From what I understood he is only referring to the CEC functionality. If you own a HDTV and a Bluray player of different manufactures you'll know that they are not guaranteed to work with a single remote but from my experience they usually do. He didn't say anything about current gen HDTV's not supporting video and audio transfer of a MHL capable phone. The only functionality that the combination won't support without a newer TV is the charging and possibly the CEC functionality.
@themillsfactor plus if the manufactures did have to match up this technology would never takeoff considering there are many phone manufacturers that don't manufacture TV's. I do agree the interviewee is a bit confusing at time's.
@rao76 No he does not refer to MHL only working Sony>Sony, Samsung>Samsung. He is referring to CEC on Charbax "normal HDMI" question. Listen closely before you complain. 6:17 for your jumping reference. ;)
@Giova86 No, because as the guy explained, it's a new technology being implemented in phones and TV's, which involves a switch recognizing whether you're inserting a USB charge/data cable, or the MHL cable. Not only does the Desire not have this switch, but it doesn't have the technology either.
Also, I was excited for this, until he noted that it would only work with TV's with the same technology. I'm not buying a new TV any time soon, so I'm out of luck. Oh well.
I was put off getting a galaxy S2 as I didn't find HDMI or "video out" in any of the specs, but apparently they're just calling it MHL so that's good news :-)
I just hope MHL support won't be crippled if you install a custom ROM...
sweet basically no need for power adapters........one day so the S II basically has hdmi out and he didnt mention the SE neo can be controlled with a tv remote
I am the interviewee in this video. Thanks for all the great comments. MHL will support gaming. MHL is tracking the popular mobile trends (including 3D), but 3D support is not in MHL 1.0. MHL will run on any OS. There are a number of phones in the market today with Android and HDMI (e.g., HTC Evo 4G, Acer Stream). It is up to the manufacturers if they want to switch from HDMI to MHL or provide both ports. Lastly, I do wear glasses for reading/computer, so I do take them off for interviews.
GREAT video. The interviewer are not that "enlightened", but the interviwee are on top of his game. Love, Love, Love.... MHL = FTW. Truly a "down-to-the-metal" guy. He knows his stuff.. Thank you to the video!!!!!
Totally unrelated, but it looks like this guy wears glasses regularly, judging by the indentation on his nose, but he's not wearing them in this video. Wonder if he was mandated to lose them for this event. Anyhoo, this sounds like a great technology. NO MORE PROPRIETARY CONNECTORS!

Who ever is thinking about connecting it to your tv, you require 2 things which does not come with the phone.
MHL CABLE: near 30quid
Adaptor (required for non mhl compatible TVs) : around 20 Quid
search google (both out june 2011)
slightly dissapointed with that.. if i really wanna connect it to my tv then i will buy it.

ok just had a thought you may not need to buy both just the adaptor and connect a hdmi cable to it....... my mistake.....................

He says both Sony and Samsung are in the consortium defining a standard.
Then goes ahead to say that MHL TVs will only work if Sony phone is connected to a Sony TV and a Samsung phone connected to a Samsung TV.
That is ridiculous. Is this how corporates define standards !!
rao76 11 months ago
@rao76 I think that was before MHL standard, but that after everyone implement the standard, then all devices will work with all HDTVs.
Charbax 11 months ago 9
@Charbax Ya, you are right. I listened to what he said at 6:20. But then HDMI is able to send signals back to the connected device.
