  • "Quest For Fire" was actually a good movie.

  • I used to make friction fires, but I took an arrow to the knee.

  • I want to learn how to make a friction fire because i feel like we take too many things for granted now days.

  • kinda surprised to see Cody using a Mora knife.

  • Never have seen a decent vid that lists and explains or prioritizes the suitability of various woods, for the constituent components for drill-sets and saw-sets. Best as I can tell, so far, yucca stalk is prolly the best spinle material ... no idea, tho, which materials are "next-best" ... I am supposing that the top piece can be made out of anything, so long as it has the proper shape and does not impart any appreciable friction ... I belive cottonwood makes best hearth ... Alternatives ?

  • It is one of my dreams to attend Cody Lundins survival school.

  • i had mine all sent, saw a ton off smoke and powder building up, i cut a notch and i went at it again and the spindle was polished as well as the fire board and it created no smoke or ember.. what can i do to stop it from polishing?

  • @Snbkr Add more surface area m8

  • @Snbkr rough up the end of the spindal with a knife edge by dragging the edge across it (same effect as sandpaper.)

  • I think his feet are in for big trouble eventually, I went barefooted around my place for a couple yrs and got bone spurs on both feet, heel and ball of my feet, it was painful just walking, I used different methods to get rid of them and it took me almost a yr. Even the indians knew that they needed foot protection.

  • @pcjsleader only difference is you cant see or feel "GoD"

  • This is not easy, and needs to be practiced many times to get it down.

There is nothing easy about this. Don't over look that tinder bundle, very crucial.

  • I was born and live in arizona :D Its great here lol ive never been in snow other than less than an inch lol

  • Creating fire ( a living breathing thing ) is as close as man will ever be to being a god.

  • @pcjsleader making a fire is as close as you'll ever get to being a man.

  • @pcjsleader Or you can be a woman and give birth to a "living breathing thing" that will eventually grow up and have the power to give birth as well. Thats being more like god then slamming to stones together..

    Food for thought

  • Way to go Andy good to see Cody helped you learn friction fire.

  • what if you put a notch on the drill where the bow line goes will that keep the drill in place better

  • bowdrill=easy-ish

    handdrill=hard as hell x)

  • @punbaca getting the form down for the bow drill is a lot harder though.

  • @jakef805 true, but if you practise it becomes pretty easy

  • @punbaca yeah it actually does. it took me a while to get it down now my record for a coal is 5 secs

  • i think its time for him to get vibrams lol

  • what city in AZ does he live near ?

  • @mattc941 chicago

  • not enough light in the video and not enough detal on how to do it

  • Making a bowdrill vs. drilling with your bare hands.

Which way is more sufficient in making fire?

  • That's what level 99 fletching and firemaking looks like IRL.

  • @XxSDKinFAMOUSxX thats why runescape nerds die first

  • Ahh....irritating noise at :32.

  • It never gets old, and you still have your eyebrows...:0

I wish you guys would do some different types of fire pits on DS...like the Dakota Fire pit, etc...keeping that fire contained is important at times dont you think...?

  • I see Cody uses a Mora knife. Cool!

  • What i love about Cody Lundin is that in almost all of videos that he is in it shows a shot of his legs and bare feet haha!

  • Take just a knife, show me the entire process from scavenging the wood, to making all the parts, the burning in of the spindle and fire board, cutting the notch and then film the ember smoldering in it, THEN blow it into flame.

  • The hard part is foraging for the entire bow drill kit. anyone can do this with a peice of cedar bought at the store.

Honestly, based on how little smoke I saw, the screeching sound, and how loose the spindle fit into the board, and how short his strokes were, I don't think fire was actually made here. I think they faked it.

  • @RoyalDragonusa are.. you questioning... Cody? wtf is wrong with you..

  • @cjoIIProductionz ,

Can't help it, it's in my nature to question the man on the pedestal.

Besides, the clip shows every mistake one can make...and it still supposedly worked? Come on...

Also, the vid never actually shows a successful ember either. It just cuts straight to blowing the tinder nest into fire....he didn't get this to work. It's fake.

  • @RoyalDragonusa Go watch dual survival youll see.

  • @RoyalDragonusa ur fake

  • @cjoIIProductionz

Here is one that actually worked, and was not faked. Look close at the difference. Look at the form, the position, how deep he makes his stroke, ho tight his hand it to his shin. This is what it looks like when it's done right., same as when i use my bow drill set.

Now, compared to the Cody Lundin

Not me in the vid btw, just someone who can really do it.

  • Here is the absolutely BEST bowdrill making vid on the web, or anywhere else. I can only wish I was as good as this guy.

    youtube.com/watch?v=vmipIIBpzMk

  • Is that Mora Classic he uses?

  • hahahahahhahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm gonna try to make a fire in my bedroom. :)

  • @Forsure3333 hahah i did that using this method and my room smellnig like a campfire for two days lol, luckyly i have hardwood floors lol

  • One must be screwed when he loses his only knife...

  • @Forsure3333

Not if you can make sharps from stone as he can and does demonstrate in other vids. To butcher, cut, kill etc like folks have done since we could walk upright.

  • Amazing cody!!!

  • Cody, are you and little Dave going to have another season together, I hope ?

  • @thomasbigfoott I hope so!

  • @achilles444 I left a comment on the Discovery Channel and will get others to do so. Hope they get the hint !!!! Keep up the good work...

  • @thomasbigfoott

If you haven't heard already, they are filming right now.

Season 2 should air summer of 2011

  • @jscanyon I

Thanks for the good news, cant wait to see the new season. I'll tell everyone!!!!!

  • Indention? What happened to the word indentation?

  • actually thats daves sustainable home

  • you dont need matches when you can use a lither

  • The best plant in my area for me for the hand drill method is mullien plants in there second year dead dry.

  • Whats this fixation people have with "survival knives"? Gotta be some primative gene acting up. Far as survival, given the choice between a knife and a large garbage bag, the bag is worth alot more.

  • @actonbath thats funny

  • i saw the fire saw on Dual Survival. not bad.

  • OUTDOORS = WINDSCREEN

  • Looks like this video was shot at an old hippie commune.

  • are you just gonna find a fire board w/ a perfect indention in it? how do you make all the parts?

  • well having a knife helps...

  • Good advice!! Sharing National Sunday Law by A. Jan Marcussen=)

  • What's the knife he uses? is it a mora or something?

  • ya it is a mora #1 at least i am pretty sure

  • yes, Mora #1 i think

  • Awesome! I need to learn how to do this.

  • he does it so fast and well im mad :0

  • nice vid!

  • what woods were used for the drill and hearth board? I live in arizona so this would be very nice information to know.

  • Juniper... listen to what he says in the vid.. -_-'

  • No matter how many times I see this I still love watching people make fire for the first time.

    Sean the Silver Fox

  • I remember all my first's; it is empowering!

  • @seanmulhall

It is awesome isnt it! Making my 1st flame is one of my top achievements in terms of personal satisfaction. Much better qualification than any other crap on a c.v./resume. Every flame i get i cant help smiling even now. Watching others do it makes you remember the feeling and how important and great it is.

  • @seanmulhall im still working on a first time lol, my damn string keeps slipping around the shaft even though tight and even shaved spindle to shape of octagon, maybe ill try the notch Cody made , have yet to try that.

  • @seanmulhall I feel that. First time I made fire from friction took me a long time to figure out. I first heard that you can make fire from rubbing sticks together when I was about 5 yrs old. I tried right then with no success. Then I did an experiment in 6th grade with a dowel and drill which was smoking but unsuccessfull. I lost hope till I found out about the powder collecting notch. Long story short, I have been trying for a lifetime and at 27 I finally made fire by friction. It blew my mind
