Never have seen a decent vid that lists and explains or prioritizes the suitability of various woods, for the constituent components for drill-sets and saw-sets. Best as I can tell, so far, yucca stalk is prolly the best spinle material ... no idea, tho, which materials are "next-best" ... I am supposing that the top piece can be made out of anything, so long as it has the proper shape and does not impart any appreciable friction ... I belive cottonwood makes best hearth ... Alternatives ?
i had mine all sent, saw a ton off smoke and powder building up, i cut a notch and i went at it again and the spindle was polished as well as the fire board and it created no smoke or ember.. what can i do to stop it from polishing?
@Snbkr you may also have to occasionally scratch the head of your spindle stick with a rough rock or something too so its not a smooth polishing kinda action. The wood type could also be the issue, here are some good woods to use for a Bow Drill, Eastern White Cedar
Staghorn Sumac, Most Willows, Balsam Fir, Aspens, Poplars, Basswood , and Spruces
I think it mostly depends on your location to which you decide to use.
I think his feet are in for big trouble eventually, I went barefooted around my place for a couple yrs and got bone spurs on both feet, heel and ball of my feet, it was painful just walking, I used different methods to get rid of them and it took me almost a yr. Even the indians knew that they needed foot protection.
@pcjsleader Or you can be a woman and give birth to a "living breathing thing" that will eventually grow up and have the power to give birth as well. Thats being more like god then slamming to stones together..
It never gets old, and you still have your eyebrows...:0
I wish you guys would do some different types of fire pits on DS...like the Dakota Fire pit, etc...keeping that fire contained is important at times dont you think...?
Take just a knife, show me the entire process from scavenging the wood, to making all the parts, the burning in of the spindle and fire board, cutting the notch and then film the ember smoldering in it, THEN blow it into flame.
The hard part is foraging for the entire bow drill kit. anyone can do this with a peice of cedar bought at the store.
Honestly, based on how little smoke I saw, the screeching sound, and how loose the spindle fit into the board, and how short his strokes were, I don't think fire was actually made here. I think they faked it.
Can't help it, it's in my nature to question the man on the pedestal.
Besides, the clip shows every mistake one can make...and it still supposedly worked? Come on...
Also, the vid never actually shows a successful ember either. It just cuts straight to blowing the tinder nest into fire....he didn't get this to work. It's fake.
Here is one that actually worked, and was not faked. Look close at the difference. Look at the form, the position, how deep he makes his stroke, ho tight his hand it to his shin. This is what it looks like when it's done right., same as when i use my bow drill set.
Now, compared to the Cody Lundin
Not me in the vid btw, just someone who can really do it.
Not if you can make sharps from stone as he can and does demonstrate in other vids. To butcher, cut, kill etc like folks have done since we could walk upright.
Whats this fixation people have with "survival knives"? Gotta be some primative gene acting up. Far as survival, given the choice between a knife and a large garbage bag, the bag is worth alot more.
It is awesome isnt it! Making my 1st flame is one of my top achievements in terms of personal satisfaction. Much better qualification than any other crap on a c.v./resume. Every flame i get i cant help smiling even now. Watching others do it makes you remember the feeling and how important and great it is.
@seanmulhall im still working on a first time lol, my damn string keeps slipping around the shaft even though tight and even shaved spindle to shape of octagon, maybe ill try the notch Cody made , have yet to try that.
@seanmulhall I feel that. First time I made fire from friction took me a long time to figure out. I first heard that you can make fire from rubbing sticks together when I was about 5 yrs old. I tried right then with no success. Then I did an experiment in 6th grade with a dowel and drill which was smoking but unsuccessfull. I lost hope till I found out about the powder collecting notch. Long story short, I have been trying for a lifetime and at 27 I finally made fire by friction. It blew my mind
"Quest For Fire" was actually a good movie.

@Snbkr rough up the end of the spindal with a knife edge by dragging the edge across it (same effect as sandpaper.)
