Hey, I'm interested in bringing back classic house and trance music. i was wondering if this would be the right synth i could use. all the VST's and software synthes i found just plain suck. i was wondering if this would be ideal for doing trance music.
i love synths. but what sucks its like record labels/companys will not sign a deal anymore with snyths. you either play the guitar or get the hell out!! i miss the 80's tho. this brings back many memories
@gridsleep yeah i was..... idk it seems like Record companys these days dont like synths or they dont want people who play them, because they think synths are for people who make music with no real musical talent! i wish we were back in the 80's where everyone played the synth more than guitar!
@mukaikof Yeah. Imagine someone turning away Geddy Lee. "Hey, screw the keyboards, kid. Let's hear some bass licks. That's real music." It's insane. Then again, the synth companies are coming out with maybe one new model a year, or every couple of years. Look at VSE's timeline. Not long ago every company was creating half a dozen new synths a year. Has the well gone dry?
@gridsleep i guess the synth is slowly dying, but i dont care much for the synths made in the past 10years. i enjoy and love the synths from the 80's and all through the early 90's. but in todays generation. music is basically dead over all, because pirating is extremely high and has basically killed the music industry and too much bullshit for music in todays generation!
I agree with you for the most part. The synths being made nowadays don't really hold a candle to those of decades past. Too many people into "preset playing" imo. Although, I would say, there's plenty of incredible music being made today. Trouble is, it's not the shit that you'll hear on the radio...you've gotta dig a little deeper to find it.
@mukaikof yeah cus pretty much most music now days use virtual synthesizer to make music and the ability to play synthesizer is considered not a big deal.
@blo0magic yeah your right, but to me music is music, even if your just beating on pans and pots with a stick, as long as people like the sound thats all that really matters!
@drecksheep Roland doesn't write drivers for anything they don't think is hip. I have to use my V-Synth GT with my Mac G4 because there are no XP x64 drivers and never will be. The last XP x64 driver Roland wrote was for the Edirol SC-8850 Sound Canvas. Korg, Alesis, Novation, and Access Music are much more liberal and friendly about supporting their customers than Roland will ever be. Roland thinks they can dictate the terms as to how you will set up your studio.
its a really bad synth, it sounds like a vst and it is your worst nightmare if you have low budget and dont know much about synthesizers... i talked with someone who is a beginner \ amature producer and he was extremely disappointed by it and trying to get rid of and buy a serious synth.
Hey Gear4Music1 - at 5:20, the arpeggiation thingy sounded like Cyndi Lauper's synth intro to "All through the night" (original studio version) - take a listen and tell me!
@V19torrent Good question, I have both ;-) The micron is great for lead sounds, especially wirh heavy oscillator synch squeals like some of Jordan Rudess' leads. The sh 201 is fantastic for spherical sounds and lush pads, since you can stack up to four oscillators. Additionaly it is much easier to program than the micron and has one more oktave, the micron on the other hand can store a lot more sounds and programs, and has a sequencer and drum machine.
@yoGregg0ry just my opinion but if you are doing EDM than i would recomend the access virus or Nord lead but they are very pricey but well worth it ! if you want to get a software synth then Sylenth1 is great ! im sure there are a lot more great ones out there but these are a few that i think rock for Trance/house/dnb/dubstep, type music !!!
hey guys im in the market for my first synth. Ive been playing guitar for 7 years and recently got a yamaha ypg635 keyboard and love it! Im looking for a VERY versatile synth with atleast 37 keys under 800 bucks with onboard effects. So far its between this synth, the roland sh01 giah, the Korg R3 or the Korg x50. I want a setup that has lots of knobs to fiddle with for quick acsess and also full sized keys! What do you guys think i should get? thx btw i like a good analog tone and look! thx!!
I'm looking for an affordable synth, that can give me analogy type sounds, I'm aiming for the kind of sounds used by bands like Motion City Soundtrack, Bomb the Music Industry, Polysics, Blood Brothers, The Hippos, or something that's fairly common in a lot of new wave/power pop/synth rock. Any recommendations?
@RLbitClassica depends on what you want to do with it. People who want instrument emulations like piano or guitar are better of with something like the juno di. If you want to create your own sounds and do a lot of real time tweaking I'd definitely recommend this one. Its also great for learning the essentials of synth programming.
I have owned over 400+ synths, samplers, modules, etc, over a period of 30+ years. I would say that for the retail value (MSRP) for this amazing little 'ieWorkstation' from Roland, is worth every dollar invested! Not only is this a great first-synth for someone new to piano playing, or music ideation/creation as a whole, but is a great addition to a studio, or for live performances, et al.
I bought one when they first came out, & later added this to my live performance gear
M-Audio's Axiom Pro 61 USB/MIDI C&DP (I included this last synth in because of the drum/MIDI pads).
I hope this information is some what helpful. Your ROI from your purchase of the Roland SH-101 cannot be measured alone in dollars/years, but also how this unit brings you as an artist to a new sonic level, to really make your sound unique & amaze listeners! I would rate the Roland SH-101 (shown above) a staggering 9.9/10!
Why do they always do this? My SH-201 is capable of so much more than just these tacky Trancey Patches.
These are Presets & useless in a song. It's the Sliders, Knobs & the LFO/HFO that are special. As well as the fact it has 2 Osc, a third if you use the PW/Feedback Wavform Genorator & then.. You have Dual layer in the sense that many Patches have 2 tones (each with 2 Osc) & if you put that with the 3rd PW/Feedback Tone.. You have 5 Tones PUMPING out sound! It sounds Fucking amazing! Not this
IT depends what you want out of your Beats. I like to get creative when making beats, I take my time, slow the tempo down a bit, use samples, FX, etc. There's lots you can do. I use my fantom for that. It has loads of kits, many sounds etc. But Keyboards arn't really designed for that specialy. If you want to make beats really well, then I'd recommend looking into the new Roland Octapad SPD-30. That kicks ass & I'm going to get one after the Deopfer Dark Energy Modular Synth. It's only £350.
Yes. Buy a Stage Synth, Not a modeling Synth like this one. And for gods sake, when you get it, don't just play the Piano, Organ & Strings. It's an insult to engineers.
well I want good sounds like this for live. I already have a Fantom and its perfect for piano organ and strings. but now i need to pick it up with a solid synth like this but with presets, unlike the microkorgs or alesis micron where you have to choose a sound when changing instead of just hitting one button
I've done some live work with this machine, & it produces some random results, due to the fact there's so much to ulter of a sound. But you can also play around before you go on, & save the patch in User Memory. There's no Piano, organ presets. Just so your aware. The Fantom's SRX Platinum Tracks is a Poweful Add on, I recomend it. Have u concidered the Akai Miniak?
Otherwise the SH-201 will compliment your Fantom (X? Or G?) very well. It doesn't have Drums though.
my plans were to make whatever lead or bass synths and arpeggios previous then save them on a preset so i can bring it up quickly
I have probably the cheapest Fantom XA. but I want to create my own sound like on this one. the Fantom just has sounds to choose from and very little to tweak. I will check out the Akai but I haven't considered it because I thought they make only midi controllers instead of real synths
Trouble is there isn't much of a Market out there for Sound Pioneering, Moduling or Sculpting Synths because all too often the synth Market caters for the Rock Musician who just couldn't understand how the synth worked, So what they do now is make it all easy for them & give them all a Hundred Stage Synths that have all the Presets built in for them. they listen to what Rock Musicians say now, even if it's stupid. So Blame them! (/watch?v=uFyQ2WFUneg at 6:51!)
haha yahh thats how i started since im pretty much a guitarist. but what would you think is best for my situation? where I need to switch sounds quick by the press of a button? and save sounds and arps i create??
Well the 201 does all that. You have 32 Presets, & another 32 User memories. You can also create Arps & save them. And all are redeemable by a push of a button. As long as you remember where you set it to, U haven't got a problem!
The MicroKorg Also does this aswel tho. So you might wana look in to both of them. It Usually boils down to these 2 bad boys as they are cheap, yet sound stupidly Poweful! I can't tell you which one to buy! It depends which sounds, & Looks u want!
mmmmm my band has a microkorg but its way too confusing with sounds and cheap like a couple buttons are already broken. so yah ill probably go with this synth it seems like i already know it since its a roland like my fantom. thanks for the advice now im conpletely sure when i buy it
Hey, I'm interested in bringing back classic house and trance music. i was wondering if this would be the right synth i could use. all the VST's and software synthes i found just plain suck. i was wondering if this would be ideal for doing trance music.

In the case of SH-201 - this synth can produce sounds, which typical VST can't because of polyphonic "feedback oscillator".
