This song is based on an actual fight and homicide that happened in 1895 and became African American folklore.

The original version was made by blues man John Hurt in 1923. But Price's version is the all-time classic and still sounds great after 50 years.

LOL! This was terrific. Stagger Lee and Billy Lyons were real people and this is a true story (happened in St. Louis in the 1890s). There are a whole lot of different versions of this song (Mississippi John Hurt did a great version in the 20s). This version's always been my favorite though.
