  • I think i'm right in saying that Richard Carpenter wrote the series after writing the excellent Catweazle starring the late great Geoffery Bayldon.

  • I remember watching this every Friday after crackerjack. My mum loved this.

  • Well, they're all real ghosts now. :(

  • On the news I heard there making this again but with ben stiller that's what they said on the news

  • all dead now and are really ghosts so wierd

  • @staypress Don't think Audrey from Corrie would be too chuffed with your comment...

  • @steve998 yeah of course she is still with us man

  • fantastic

  • Ha ha audrey fae coronation street was in that lol

  • peadophile central here like

  • Ironically, most of the actors in this are real ghosts now...

  • I used to fucking hate this crap when i was a kid ? I was always waiting for a real ghost to come on what a waist of half an hour of my child hood

  • To use a well known phrase," DEY DONT MAKEM LIKE DIS ANYMORE" ;-(

  • another show as a child i loved to watch!

  • what a fantastic program used to watch this!

  • melo.DEEEE

  • OMFG! how old am I?

    DONT ANSWER THAT!

  • @KY0UJlN - Me too, scary how old we are now lol

  • I used to switch over when this shit was on.

  • @gibbo909 lol im so glad i wasnt the only one lol

  • don't call rent-a-ghost......call yvette fielding!

  • cany believ i used to watch this bit scary mind u

  • Anybbody else remember Christopher Biggins in this? He played a guy called "ADAM PAINTING" who ran department store!

  • Not sure there's much in my childhood memories of TV that tops this. Knightmare possibly?... Rentaghost rocked. We should have it re-ruined I reckon :)

  • Rentaghost the movie on its way!

  • TV gold!

  • Audrey from Coronation St was in this

  • @elafonisi08 Joanna Froggatt who was in Coronation Street for a time loved this show as well. The first time she saw Sue Nicholls on set all she could think was 'Miss Popov!!"

  • Therymasterwidnes it was an Aids-related illness

  • How did he die?? Anyone know? He was only 44 when he died!

  • @TherymasterWidnes He died of an AIDS related illness.

  • no one make great shows like anymore good proper enterainmant in the days we just had 4 channnels well in the 80s at least both BBC & ITV produced great stuff like this

  • They really have to made show like this now

  • Ah, those were the days...!

  • CAMPEST SHOW EVER

  • @JonnyInfinite Sir, surely not camper than Are You Being Served!

  • This is perfect for making love to

  • Oh wow this is so great even though vI will spend the rest of the day humming or maybe even singing the theme tune, but I don't care. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

  • I can't believe Mrs Popov ended up on Corronation St. Keep expecting her to sneeze and disappear and reappear in a tree!

  • @Guitar7mark Funnily enough Joanne Froggatt was a Rentaghost fan so she could only see Audrey Nicholls as Miss Popov when she joined the cast of Corrie

  • Trivia: The actor who played Mr Meeka also appeared in the porno theatre scene in American Werewolf In London.

  • @cottonwhiskersuk He didnt did he ? do you know what character he played i dont remember him being in the film.

  • this was the child's version of the young ones

  • i watched and loved the young ones as an 8 year old kid in 1982.

  • is it me or was this show a lot like the young ones without the swearing and adult themes

  • unknown, i hated rentaghost as a kid, but the theme tune popped into my head for no reason.

  • thats brilliant hahahahah!

  • @rocksoliddude1 Dude here gets it.

  • My God. I think I was 5 or 6 whan I was watching this. I forgot about it till I stumbled across this and heard the song and the 2 characters and memories flooded back. Gosh!!!! I want to be 5 again.

  • Universal studios are currently finalising plans for a full length movie

  • When I was wee I used to think Timothy Claypole the jester was played by Kenny Everett as they seemed so similar!!

I think his real name was Michael Staniforth but I'm not sure.

  • You're quite right. It is Michael Staniforth. With his talent of roller skating, he later went on to Starlight Express. Where he played the character of C.B.

  • Used to love this. "Don't go down to the cellar" was a gag they used to end the episodes on, and usually they did go down and got torched by the dragon!! Hilarious!!

  • Claypole's dead?

Always reminded me of that dude in Jethro Tull..

  • Yes he died of an AIDS related disease in the 80s,the other two orginal ghorsts are no longer with us now.

Lynda La Plante was the orginal Miss Popov before she left and Corrie's Sue Nichols joined as her cousin.

  • I never knew Michael Staniforth died of an Aids Related illness. Last i heard (admittedly a good few years ago) he went into Starlight Express.

  • Yes sadly he died in July 87,he was only 44,very sad.

  • Rentaghost was good when it first started, when they had Fred Mumford, the ghost from Southsea, whose parents didn't know he was dead so he had to throw his dinner out of the window (very amusing if you think about it) but once it was just Claypole and the bloody McWitch.....yawn...Crap.

  • You're right... when originally there were 3 ghosts - Mumford, Claypole and an older guy with the next door neighbor that looked like Peter Sutcliffe... but by the time Molly Weir and Audrey from Corrie turned up I grew out of it.. thank god

  • God yeah, Fred Mumford and Mr Davenport, the rather nervous straitlaced Victorian spook. It was fabulous until the guy who played Davenport died. :(

  • i love that show, i never missed an ep

  • remember dobbin the pantomime horse and "dont go into the cellar!"

  • the woman on corrie were in this aswell ( gail's mum )

  • Both the actors in this video have now died, can't remember her name, but the Scottish actress who played McWitch died less than two years ago and Timothy Claypole is no more. He sadly passed away from AIDS related pneumonia.

  • Molly Weir.

  • Comment removed

  • I used to hate this!

  • gadzooks mrs meeker!

  • Absolute Class

  • i had a science teacher who was mr claypole's double..

  • you can't beat rentaghost just a great show that encapsulates time.what a wonderful show and thoughtful memories of the three original cast who have now become ghosts themselves.

  • I always liked the theme-tune more than the actual programme.

  • mr claypole damn scary,..i had a m8 who looked like him as well

  • Oh the memories come flooding back, I enjoyed watching this when I was a kid. My faves were the jester & Miss Popoff - made me laugh ;D

  • The jester used to scare the beejesus out of me as a kid

  • Loved this show!! the pantomime horse ?? Remember mrs popoff aka audrey from coronation street!!

  • Brings back some weird memories from when I was a kid!! Strange program - dont know if I'd let my kids watch it!!

  • gosh this brings back memories....used to watch this after school on YOUR REACH OUT STATION NTA2 CHANNEL 5! Nigeria....:) seems like a long time ago ..

  • lol classics i loved this when come home from school turn on tv watch rentaghost worzal gummidge and all the other classics lol damn feel old when watching these thks for sharing

  • Hated this when I was at school!

  • gadzooks master

  • wasnt the woman who plays audrey roberts in corrie in this?

  • yup your not wrong lol

  • YIP THATS HER

  • She was! She played "Nadia Popov", a Russian Ghost who popped off every time she sneezed! She had a Ghost cousin too played by no less than Lynda La Plante!

  • Gutted to hear that TC has passed on. I hope he is haunting someone some where... RIP court jester fella! You are a legend.

  • Great show shame that they dident do a longer version of the theme tune.

  • RIP Michael rentaghost was another fav of mine.sorry to hear he died :(

  • RIP Michael Staniforth (Timothy Claypole) who wrote, composed and sang this theme!

An excellent tribute would be to use this theme or a slightly reworked one in the new series of Rentaghost....

But to make me sound old the new series will never be as good as the original! Mainly cos I'm not a kid anymore...but I will watch!! :)

  • RIP Michael. One of the many early victims of AIDS but I didn't understand any of that when I was a kid.

  • Never can be m8, what we need to make us laugh has changed with the growing of that fuzzy hair - rentaghost will rock 4ever in my world.

  • They're bringing the show back! Along with Worzel Gummage.

  • yes

  • Was this on number 73...?

    Vaguely remember this x

  • No, Number 73 was a Saturday morning ITV show (1982-1984 I think). Rentaghost was shown on BBC 1 in a weekday childrens slot (1975-1984).

  • number 73 was true bilge. Rentaghost was the greatest.

  • mr.claypooooolee

  • Timothy Claypole infact.

  • the actor who played him sadly died of a HIV related illness. :-(

  • :-( Oh, I used to love him. He was my favourite!

  • His on screen antics were an early influence on my development. Maybe that is something I shouldn't admit to. Gadzooks!

  • This was awesome... used to love it. Please BBC or someone bring it back..

Does anyone know whether it's available on DVD?

  • Yes, look on Amazon. I tried to copy the link for you, but it got blocked.

  • aaahhhh memories

  • well i had a striker,which was better than a boxer.Strikers were the best,liked grifters too

  • I didnt watch too much of rentaghost either. I used to go out on my Grifter bike, The heaviest bmx in the world lol.

  • rent a ghost got on my tits , i used to go out on me yellow chopper lol an my mate had a go-cart lol

  • Simply spiffing!

  • Nice! Shame it was cut short, Timothy Claypole laugh was fun to hear!

  • I watched this!...back in the days lol..

  • loved it

  • How old am I??? OMG... I used to watch this all the time! :D Happy Days LOL

  • Why oh why, did they try and feed us this garbage!!

  • Because you don't a classic tv series if it kicked you bum and said it was a classic series

  • oh i bet you were a joy as a child

  • I certainly was. I thought Educating Marmalade was much better. I think the girl who played her is dead now though.

  • This comment is for webbhead92. The girl who played her was called Charlotte Coleman who appeared also in Worzel Gummidge. She died at a very young age.

  • Yes, Charlotte Coleman (Marmalade Atkins) died in 2001 after suffering a severe asthma attack.

  • is that lulu dancing round the table with timothy claypole

  • No, she is a Scottish actress named Molly Weir. She often appeared in comedy roles.

Molly died just a couple of years ago aged 94!

  • Michael Staniforth died in 1986. See if you can guess what of. What an awful world this is

  • who needs to guess when you have wiki you blend he died of aids and it was in 1987 genius!

  • I should have checked it on Wiki and got my facts straight - sorry shakey.

  • This always made me feel uneasy as a kid!

  • Molly Weir was suposed to open our shool fete during the 80's...but she never turned up. She was known as Bitch-Hazel from then on!!!

  • Ru-Ru-Rent-a-ghost.

I was always slightly disappointed when I got home from school and this was on. Having said that. I can safely say I haven't thought about it ONCE since 1982, so nice one for posting it.

  • Michael Staniforth used to give me the creeps as a kid and i ain't talking about his Jester outfit. I didn't think it was possible for 6-year-olds to have Gaydar but i sure did. Whatever could've given him away?

  • Yes - likewise! I remember Michael Staniforth making an appearance on Blue Peter, in which he revealed his flair for roller-skating, having just landed a part in the then new Lloyd Webber musical "Starlight Express". Stripped of his motley, there was still something decidely "not right" about him - as my less than liberal father never missed an opportunity of pointing out whenever got in from work early and found me watching "Rentaghost".

  • Agreed - I always thought there was something not right about a grown man prancing about in a jesters costume, for the amusement of children.

  • dont go in the cellar...lol..

  • is it just me or does anyone else think of rentaghost when they see audrey off corrie?

  • She played Nadia Popov, who popped off whenever she sneezed.

  • Shown when there were only four channels not like now..

  • Four channels ? Luxury ! When I were a youg'un we only ever had three channels ! And when we got home from t'mill, our Da would make us watch Play for the Day on BBC2

    ...etc...

  • Remember the modern ghost couldn't walk thru walls as he was only recently deceased ;)

  • What great kids tv in the 70s-80s, being a kid then was ace fun, wish they would re-vamp them back again so the kids of today could see what kids tv should be about....

  • Monkey Magic! I'm going to look for that now as well.

    I loved Rentaghost.

  • Total concurrence re late 70's - mid 80's being top time to be a kid. So many clips of growing-up-programmes on here...I'll be on this thing all night at this rate...Going to look for Monkey Magic now!

  • they just don't make kids programes as they used to.

  • Gar - Mind thy language.

  • Wasn't it great bein a kid in the 80's?

  • I just bought the first series for my brother's xmas from Ebay lol

    .............its from the heart

  • I was telling my hubby about this tonight..he hadnt heard of it (he is 8 years younger than me!) Made me feel old!!!

  • RENTAGHOST!!!!!!!!! The 80's were the best time to be a kid.

  • I remember my big sister and neighbours used to watch this when I was very little, about 3 years old in 1983 and that jester bloke used to freak me out! ..and the music

  • I liked the pantomime horse that sleepwalked

  • Dobbin.lol.

  • bloody nora! its brings it back home! but all good though.thanks for posting, you put a smile upon my face

  • rent a pump you full of it

  • I used to fucking hate this as a kid.

  • Timothy Claypole, now sadly a real ghost but he was cocking brilliant. What a top show.
