(take 4:19min) -The B-17G A239822 that appears,it was piloted by LT. Donald D. Sharps (94th BG, 333rd BS), shot down about ten minutes after bombs away over Brunswick, Germany- Jan 11, 1944 and crashed Fladderlohhausen, Germany. I don't know the nose art but de number was 42-38922 - MACR 1887 by Lockheed Vega. Two KIA in attack by FW 190's.

Outstanding film, particularly the gun camera footage and the recovery of the wrecked bombers, which were quickly salvaged for strategic materials after air intelligence recovered bombsights, weapons, charts, etc. The German homeland defense was augmented by select veteran fighter groups brought in from the Eastern Front in early 1944. But by mid-1944, with the introduction of USAAF long-range escort fighters, even those Luftwaffe groups were severely depleted & offered little defense thereafter

I dont know german but it seemed like the subtitles said american pilots but the german voice over appears to say "gangster" a couple times thru out the video when reffering to the pilots.

Im in flight training out here in the US and sometimes I think if i was born earlier and i had to pilot one of those bombers over Germany or the pacific. Kids as young as me were flying those missions, God damn that war was awful....... The greatest generation thats for damn sure

Notwithstanding the crimes the German army and SS committed elsewhere and no matter who shot or bombed first, carpet-bombing densely populated civilian targets where your main victims are women, children and elderly since adult men were at the front, is hardly an act of heroism. So the German sentiment of US bombers as "gangster" is understandable.

And if you say those airmen were simply doing their duty following orders, then you'd have to extend the same excuse to German soldiers earlier.
