กล้องมึงเป็นไรวะ !!!! ขโมยเค้าถ่ายหรอ ไมมันหลุดไปหลุดมาอ่ะคว....ย What the hell is the probblem with the cam!!! It was just fucking shaking all the time! Were u hiding it!!But Thankss any way.
Ruthie Henshall? The domestic starlet who has no more career? The "singer" whose voice is so raspy and ugly that she's painful to listen to - worse, she can't hit and sustain the notes? The Ruthie who at the concert stood as lifeless as a tree since she couldn't act? She can't be compared to the phenomenal Salonga; in the has-been can't even be compared to international sensation Susan Boyle...
@archieanders That's rather unfair and sardonic, especially considering the whole cast of the 10th Anniversary Concert stood "lifeless as a tree" because they were SUPPOSED TO; you want to talk about sustaining notes, why does Salonga have to put so much vibrato on the notes that she knocks them up higher than they're supposed to be. Ruthie's voice and Salonga's voice are totally different, so there's really not much whereby to compare and contrast them.
@archieanders My point is please don't deride singers on YouTube just because you don't like them; why not try explaining your arguments rationally and calmly rather than using a tone that makes it seem like you're scoffing; for instance, what is your proof that Ruthie Henshall can't sustain notes? She hit every note in this song and held it exactly as long as she should've - just because she didn't drag them all out doesn't mean she couldn't have.
@archieanders And let's not bring Susan Boyle into this, considering that she sang this song as an audition for a talent show, and - all of HER talent notwithstanding - thus she did not perform it as Fantine, so there's no basis for comparing her to anyone else who sings this song. And no matter what you think of Ruthie Henshall, it's downright obnoxious for you to call her voice "ugly" on a forum that anyone can read, and also for you to assume that she can't act simply because she stood still
@archieanders Speaking of acting, I don't see Salonga acting very much more than Henshall did, and while we're on the subject they acted out totally different sides of Fantine, Henshall portraying the defeated, dejected, and miserable side (and as a matter of fact the musical is translated as "The MISERABLE Ones"); whereas Salonga portrays the furious and retaliatory side, neither of which is out of tune with the character, so judge their acting based on THAT and not on whether or not they moved
@archieanders Oh, and about Henshall's voice being raspy, she was kind of singing a very heart-wrenching song: Is it not possible that she made her voice that rough so as to be in keeping with the character? After all, her voice is much clearer in the Epilogue, when she's not singing in such a miserable context. As another note on Henshall's acting, have you seen her in Lovely Ladies? I thought she acted rather obviously...
@archieanders Either way, let's not get into a heated debate over which singer is better, because there's a lot more to discuss in a lot more detail than what you have presented, which again comes off very sardonically; Henshall and Salonga both have their pros and cons, so can we not just leave it at that and leave more in-depth discussion for a more appropriate - and decidedly less public - forum? I didn't not intend for this to seem like a tirade, but I felt inclined to to say something.
@LuxrayShinx There was a SIGNIFICANT difference in Henshall's and Salonga's acting. Salonga acted out the part, while Henshall was as wooden as a tree. Henshall's rough vocal attack wasn't part of her "acting" - that was her natural singing voice. And as many others have pointed out, Henshall had difficulty sustaining notes. In BOTH acting and singing, Henshall was infinitely inferior to Salonga. In fact, talking about less talented performers, I prefer Boyle's naturally melodic sound.
@annief31 Again, bringing up Susan Boyle in a conversation about people who are acting out Fantine is utterly pointless and not a valid argument. And the "rough vocal attack" is not present in other songs of Henshall's, such as in Fantine's Death and the Epilogue, therefore I do not see how it was her natural singing voice. I am therefore led to believe that she was simply acting.
@annief31 Again, the "wooden as a tree bit", NO ONE in the TAC moved around on stage, not just Henshall. I do not see, anyway, how that is at all reflective of their acting ability, since voice inflection is equally if not more expressive. Henshall and Salonga both did well there.
@annief31 What is your proof that Henshall in any way cannot sustain notes? She seemed to be able to very easily in the song and every other one that she sang. Perhaps that is simply the bandwagon technique running away with itself. At the risk of being crass, it seems to me that you are simply reflecting my arguments with transparent assertions and absolutely no evidence. If you intend to argue this point, you ought to actually argue rather than simply be dogmatic.
@annief31 And by the way, once again at the risk of being not only crass but also rude, until you can think up a valid reason and logical argument for the meaningless and groundless drivel which you are currently spewing - quite defensively if I might add - I request that you please refrain from replying, as it unnecessarily clutters my e-mail. Thank you.
@annief31 Oh, and I do not wish for this to seem either prying or accusatory, but evidence seems to indicate that you are the same person as a certain "archieanders", with whom I have already had a debate on this subject. Are you that same "archieanders", because if so it seems rather odd and almost suspicious that you would attempt to rekindle this debate with me under a different username; if I am wrong in that suspicion, please prove me so. Otherwise, leave me alone, you're wasting my time.

It's o.k., but the London Fantine has just a little more grit, what i think is need for this song. Lea is a little too pretty-musically, physically-everything. I don't feel Fantine's pain.

@TheKristen1979 really? I wasn't the one to record this (also as a note for you, most musical videos on youtube, not uploaded by the person who recorded them) From the way it was covered it seemed to be more of an usher being nearby. It isn't easy to record during a performance at all.
@trojantjl hahahahahaha. that's funny. susan don't have the technique and finesse like lea and all the other great fantines to do this 8 times a week. susan is good.....but only good. not amazing.
@xNatalie24x I saw Lea in NYC as Fantine. I have seen many actresses play Fantine. Lea was the only one who made me sobbed in my chair... I will never forget Lea as Fantine!
She's my favorite as both Fantine and Eponine! But my absolute least favorite is Aretha Franklin's version. She completely ruined the song. I think I'd rather hear nails on chalkboards than her version.

@moorewjr she is definitely wearing a wig...it is rare to go to a bway show nowadays where less than the majority of women are not wearing wigs (i'm unsure about men...I would guess men only wear wigs if the character requires a long hairstyle that needs to be styled a certain way)...it makes it so much easier to make sure the hair is always perfect. @jacobian07 people on stage can easily see the little red dot on the camera, it doesnt bother most of them that they are filming. my sister is in legally blonde in london and she says EVERY performance there is a few people filming
I watched this performance of Lea in Broadway last 2007. How I wish all the millions who watched Susan Boyle on TV would have the chance to watch theater in Boadway or the West End. Then they will stop comparing the legendary performances of Lea Salonga, Ruthie Henshall, Patti LuPone or Ellaine Paige. They are of a different league.
if Susan sings for her life, Lea sings for her country and countrymen to make her countrymen proud for standing in spite of the trials in life. She gives hopes to the many dreams of her fellow Filipinos.

i don't feel any emotion listening to Lea. I do from Ruthie and Susan though. I think i like Susan best because her singing isn't perfect, and that makes it beautiful in its own way.
im not saying anyone's opinons are bad but Lea, Eliane and Susan sang this song amazingly and you can't really compare them because they are all good in different ways.
@MNBTM of course she does... what do you expect? lea's a pro. susan's an amateur. i'm not saying that susan's not good. but lea has much more experience. she might has been at par with lea if she had the same level of experience with her.
@MNBTM don't get me wrong though. i do love susan boyle. i was actualy touched by her performance. but comparing her with lea salonga is totally out of discussion. they're of different leagues. lea had won lots of prestigious awards throughout her career and susan's just merely started her's.
@H2ofreak2012 oh obviously. i was just kinda throwing that out there after the whole susan boyle craze. i mean, frankly this is the only song boyle can sing but i digress.
@SailorYavin its not like she'd stop the show and just stop. look straight at the camera. and be like "wtf. theres a camera up there! i cant work under these conditions! nevermind that you all paid to see this!" haha im sure she waits until AFTER her scene to take any action
I have spent several days to compare all singer who sang this and my opinion Lea is THE BEST. Her voice, her act, her emotion are just perfect for this piece...Bravo Lea.You can feel and hear the distress of Fantine...
That is of course my opinion.....The best Fantine...
susan brought me here but rediscover Leah was golden!
enough for the comparison ..the song is so beautiful that i guess MOST of us eps the judge and brtons caught flat footed to be reminded by themost unlikely singer SUSAN BOYLE... I agree though Susan got TALENT period.
A SECRET so sneaky for Susan Boyle uses to make us cry. Just watch 140 Tubarc - Susan Boyle Secret Code for Weeping. Give me a feedback if you were smart enough to get it . . ..
It was a difficult performance to lea because she had to voice out this song in an acting way and that should be how to sing that song when she was acting on the stage while susan boyle just sang this song as normal like other singing contestants on the stage.
i personally like ruthie henshall better i love her as Fantine more than lea being Fantine. i think ruthie h. had a better voice which suited the characteristics of fantine.... just my opinion though,... i personally love ruthie henshall's powerful yet beautiful voice. lol
hahahaha....if there was youtube before..then lea salonga video will be sensation..hahahha....she's already in Hollywood Disney movie,,,she;s the voice of animated character.and also won the 1991 TOny ,Lawrence ,Oliver et... Awards wipe out USA and UK in just 1 year.......lea Salonga is a great muscal Singer.....you will know......more of her as you wactch her video.......she's the MIss Saigon ......she won this title in a global search not only in america but global.......
I am not a English speaker. When I heard Susan sang this song,it was my first time listen to this piece. Without knowing the lyric, I just thought it is some exciting song. But when knowing the lyric, I found that though Susan have a good voice, she did not express the emotion of this song. But for a singing competition, I think she's done well.
You are right,However it seems Susan does not have the benefit of a director/conductor can we not just give her some peace and just enjoy which I know every one must
I saw Lea Salonga as Fantine on Broadway she was unbelievable! her power as a singer is amazing, and I've seen about 30 shows on broadway. For those talking about her acting and that being a disadvantage - this is a MUSICAL she WAS ACTING that's how musicals work. And I'm shocked this was even caught on film they usually kick ppl out when they see you doing that.
-_- this was put up when there wasn't any better video up or as a common DVD, all of the videos up on youtube of Lea as Fantine were even worse then this.
we do not need to compare susan to lea because susan is just starting her career while lea is already in her peak...lets just wish to god that susan also made it like lea, they are both brilliant and good singer its just that lea made it first! lets be glad that both of them are good and lets support them for bringing us world class talents! instead of comparing them with each other lets pray for them to be the best that they can be...
Susan Boyle may be old, and Lea Salonga very talented, perhaps even more talented that Susan Boyle (I am no critic). But Lea is at a major disadvantage. She is acting. Susan Boyle really meant it.
I came to this video to see some nice Lea Salonga-Fantine, not all this hate for Ruthie, another stunning actress. :\

Fantine dies from disease. Lea's character in Miss Saigon, Kim, kills herself.
anyway, what's striking to me is that all of Lea's high-profile characters die. :(
pinoyidol2006 2 years ago 7
Lol im sorry about the miss understanding yea im getting confused with miss saigon with Kim lol!!!

kim kills herself? D:
i really havent obtained much of the plot from listening to the songs repeatedly have i? Wikipedia it is.

I think i like Susan best because her singing isn't perfect, and that makes it beautiful in its own way.

are u serious... u r perhaps apathetic by nature if ur saying u dont feel any emotion listening to leah.

im not saying anyone's opinons are bad but Lea, Eliane and Susan sang this song amazingly and you can't really compare them because they are all good in different ways.

she beats susan.
MNBTM 2 years ago 37
@MNBTM of course she does... what do you expect? lea's a pro. susan's an amateur. i'm not saying that susan's not good. but lea has much more experience. she might has been at par with lea if she had the same level of experience with her.
werfhu 1 year ago
@MNBTM don't get me wrong though. i do love susan boyle. i was actualy touched by her performance. but comparing her with lea salonga is totally out of discussion. they're of different leagues. lea had won lots of prestigious awards throughout her career and susan's just merely started her's.
werfhu 1 year ago 4
@MNBTM LOL! I wouldn't even dare compare Lea to Susan! Lea is Fantine!

If she could see the camera the video would have ended much sooner. She mentioned in her blog that she does tell ushers about any cameras she sees.

That is of course my opinion.....The best Fantine...

enough for the comparison ..the song is so beautiful that i guess MOST of us eps the judge and brtons caught flat footed to be reminded by themost unlikely singer SUSAN BOYLE... I agree though Susan got TALENT period.

I love the idea of a petite Fantine. She's amazing. She's a star : )
lexomil17 2 years ago
It was a difficult performance to lea because she had to voice out this song in an acting way and that should be how to sing that song when she was acting on the stage while susan boyle just sang this song as normal like other singing contestants on the stage.
lovencare62 2 years ago 4
i personally like ruthie henshall better i love her as Fantine more than lea being Fantine. i think ruthie h. had a better voice which suited the characteristics of fantine.... just my opinion though,... i personally love ruthie henshall's powerful yet beautiful voice. lol

heard ruthie, i agree she has a magnificent voice..but leah's version is far more magnificent.

I am not a English speaker. When I heard Susan sang this song,it was my first time listen to this piece. Without knowing the lyric, I just thought it is some exciting song. But when knowing the lyric, I found that though Susan have a good voice, she did not express the emotion of this song. But for a singing competition, I think she's done well.
antidinosaur 2 years ago 5
You are right,However it seems Susan does not have the benefit of a director/conductor can we not just give her some peace and just enjoy which I know every one must
arthurdonachy 2 years ago
Totally agree she doesn't bring out the emotion as someone like Ruthie Henshall does

Dawnabelle13 2 years ago 3
best version i've heard of this song, followed closely by ruthie hensall, and then susan boyle's version.
this woman is amazing. that was spectacular.

acting is not a disadvantage, FYI, this song is made for stage play that requires a basic form which is acting!
hattorikate 2 years ago
we do not need to compare susan to lea because susan is just starting her career while lea is already in her peak...lets just wish to god that susan also made it like lea, they are both brilliant and good singer its just that lea made it first! lets be glad that both of them are good and lets support them for bringing us world class talents! instead of comparing them with each other lets pray for them to be the best that they can be...

Lea Salonga brought me here.. the best Fantine ever... Susan Boyle is an old granny....
gobitz 2 years ago
Susan Boyle may be old, and Lea Salonga very talented, perhaps even more talented that Susan Boyle (I am no critic). But Lea is at a major disadvantage. She is acting. Susan Boyle really meant it.

Okay, but, one can act better when acting oneself.
