Teach Yourself Korean is the book I'm using! I really like it because it gives you a dialogue in korean, new vocabulary words in each unit, and lots of great exercises. You learn new words and at the same time you learn sentences and expressions. It also comes with 2 cds, which lets you can hear the correct pronunciation of words and sentences.
I also have a korean friend that I ask questions every time I finish a chapter.
Learning korean has been really fun! I hope to visit Korea one day!
@Theinnocentdream ~~ i've done it.. but i usually end up cozying up to whoever i'm next to in order to confirm who is doing what.. and why someone suddenly started crying. i can get the jist, but it's still hard for me to understand fully. in conversations, i can ask questions to confirm my understanding, but a movie just talks at you, and they go pretty quickly >.< thanks for your comment!
아니야 is informal though, right? what would be a formal way to say that i'm not good at korean, would it have to be 저는 한국말 잘못해요 or could a simple 아니요 suffice as well?
@expatkerri okay, thanks! thank you also for the recommendations you made in this video, i'm going to the library later today to see if i can borrow any of them! ^^
how long did it take you to learn what you have learned ? how many % would you say you have learned or how advance is your korean now?would you say basic, ( highly improbable ) advance, expert, or speaking korean as if you have spoke it all your life? can you talk about deep topics using korean? thanks!!
@tiochaota ~ i first taught myself to read hangul 5 years ago, but i only seriously started studying and teaching myself how to speak Korean in 2009. i can usually understand about 60-70% of conversations around me, but if the topics get political or complex, i can't understand much other than the very basic jist of the conversation. i would say i speak korean like an intermediate learner :)
@expatkerri lol ur so modest if u know how to ask people about leaving bags unattended on tables, without fear of them being stolen or mistaken as explosives, also i am curious whats ur french %
@neevar123 ~ haha! i learned french in school, in the immersion program... which means i did a lot of french! at this point, i can understand nearly fluently, but since i'm not using french at all these days, it's hard to speak it fluently.
@expatkerri, i have that problem as well, not using it so u forget it,so i usually talk to myself in the language and it usually helps, u might get branded a weirdo though by ur friends, but who gives a hoot (hoot hoot hoot now i shoot shoot shoot)
I've been looking at getting some books and things to teach myself some Korean over the summer, and I'm seeing/hearing a lot of good reviews about 'Survival Korean' but I can't seem to find it anywhere online. ):
Stephen Revere from the Let's Speak Korean show on arrirang tv. I watch the YouTube videos. He co-stars with Lisa Kelley. The show is pretty informative. Stephen is energetic and makes learning the language interesting. I didn't know about the book. Now I have to look for that. Thanks for the info.
@MateaGracija YES! he is honestly an amazing teacher, and i still remember a lot of the information that i learned in that first textbook, "Survival Korean". definitely a must have!
I LOVED Boys Over Flowers (except I wanted her to be with Ji Hoo, omg Kim Hyun Joong is to die for). I'm going to rewatch it whenever I actually start learning the language to improve my skills. ;)
@imahnobody ~~ thank you!! i think it's easier than ever to teach yourself these days, with all the resources.... and you're right, the particles are very very difficult... but we have to learn them! !!! FIGHTING!
@Apostrophe84 ~~ hi! i've never attended a class or taken a course. i learned entirely through websites and asking questions to friends!! i think it's the best way ^^
Wow there's many book for leanging korean. actually, I've never seen other country's labrary. you are very beatiful! cheer up! for your english level!

I guess that my email was one of the things that made you decide on making this video. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. I will see if I can't find those books in my area.
By the way, have you ever been using any computer-based program for learning Korean, such as Rosetta Stone? If so, what program was that and what did you think of it?
@ABombs1 ~~ ha ha you're right. but i think 남자 means male, man.. but the name of the show in english is usually written as "boys over flowers".. i guess it sounds cute!
Maybe in 2011 or 2012 I'll talk to you in Korean ! I will learn it fast because I know chinese and japanese xD. The korean vocab is so similar to japanese and chinese and the writing is ok xD
thanks for posting this vid ! I'll use the Yonsei univeristy courses which are explained in chinese as I said before ^_^, I will also try the "survival korean" you metionned
@expatkerri Yep fighting !!! One day I'll talk to you in korean !!! But I still need some time to learn the basics, but since I know japanese i'm going to start from 0 xD
@ever4one Salut Hyonwoo !
@ever4one ~~ of course i'll mention your sites!! you're a big part of my korean language journey!!! thank you again for all of the work you put into helping others learn korean!!!!!!! 엄청 고맙습니다 현우!!
To learn Korean is really tough, but your Korean is really awesome. if you have any problems to learn Korean, I think i can help you. And your Korean is not clumsy~~ ^^
I have Teach Yourself: Korean, and it's quite good. The only thing I dislike about it personally is that they don't always provide the 한글 version of their sample phrases. Their romanization also hurts my eyes. ><
Good video. :) I have the "Learn ___ Yourself," but for Irish. I think I've touched it twice. Haha. I watch a lot of variety shows (I love Misuda) and dramas, and that helps me pick-up Korean. I still don't know Hangul, though! Hangul is the only alphabet that doesn't work on my computer.
@Codylangaugesblog Unfortunately, all textbooks use very formal language... You can use dramas to figure out how casual language works xD, I did it for japanese ! If one day, you got the opportunity to get the Assimil collection I highly recommend it to you ! It's funnier than TYS which is sometimes boring, sometimes fun xD at least you don't have to play with the audio, it's all in the target language !
Because I find myself getting addicted to Korean dramas, I decided to start the process of learning the language.
I am starting to pick up only a few words from Korean dramas and k-pop - Like "aegyo" which is not useful at all. Must stop watching SNSD clips on youtube! Doh! So I am impressed with how much you have learned.
Then again I am just doing it in my off time and starting with free resources on the internet. Just to begin.

Hey Kerri.
I'd also like to recommend seemile.com
Jenny Lee's class is the best for learning grammar.
And there's a channel on Youtube called "sweetandtasty". She doesn't really teach the grammar, but she mainly focuses on expanding vocabulary.
The rest I learn at my Korean language school in my town.

Isn't that MAN over flower? or men over flowers? 남자 = man!
I've been using LIVEMOCHA (.com) another great site.
It has learning, review, listening, reading, and quizzes per unit. Really quite interactive. I've suddenly gotten loads better using it.
Great video, I really need books to be more physically into the learning, so this is useful
