Are these great pets? Please level with me... b/c I never want to abandon a pet. I am looking for a loving, intelligent, tame bird. If you can help, I would SO appreciate. Thanks!!
@funandeducation So you would abandon a bird if it was not a 'great pet'? Tip: stay away from animals, you do not deserve pets. Animal welfare is full of the victims of such people.
@ossminid WOW, did you TOTALLY misunderstand what I wrote!! Geez! Why do you think I am researching BEFORE adopting an animal? I have had pets my entire life, and they all love me. For the record, I adopted a 3 year old Goffins Cockatoo and we are totally in love. Quit the hate, and please... try to understand what someone is saying before insulting them. Peace.
fresh fruit really sounds better for lories & as a new lory owner my question is should i still give him the lory powder? the rescue said that its supposedly gives them extra vitamins and everything but ive been chopping up veggies & fruits for him 2-3 times daily & he actually seems to prefer that
Lorys are beautiful I have one of my own. Her name is Nikki. She is a green naped lory and is 2yrs. old. She is a real sweetie and I just love her to pieces!
Please please please don't feed wild lorikeets bread or sunflower seeds, it is very damaging to their insides because they are nectar and fruit eaters. If you feed the wild ones seed they can loose the feathering on their tongue and will not be able to eat in the wild, (they use the feathering on their tongue to get the nectar out of flowers) You can buy a lorikeet and honeyeater powder from any pet or produce store. You can leave it dry or mix it with warm water and they absolutely love it.
@kizesa Get a life and your 22 friends. A few sunflower seeds isnt bad and nowhere did she say she was using bread...she stated fruit. Do you think rainbows are stupid? Bandantic people go away and do some real environmental good
Just to let you know that this comment has come from our own mistakes and seeing a avian vet what this diet was doing to our loved birds.
When a wild bird find a source of food that is constant and reliable to them they will eat and over eat witch causes over heating, digestive problem habit to pluck feather's and this does not happen over night but a long period of time.
to these birds it is like us eating chocolate in massive doses.
It is far better for long term condition to feed them nector

we have lorikeets at our house everyday, we put out sugary water with bread and sultanas in a bowl and they love it! if we hold out bread they will jump on our arms and stay there till they have finished!
Wonderful video, thanks for posting. I've just added one as a video response of some rainbow lorikeets we saw feeding off a palm tree near where we live in Queensland. The picture quality is a little low though due to the bright sky behind.
It's wonderful to be able to catch our unique wildlife on video. There are some beautiful animals on this planet, if only everyone would just stop in one spot for 5 minutes and look at what's around. We have a beautiful country and beautiful animals.
Hey everyone, please note that these birds are lorikeets and cannot digest seed (infact it can be fatal) I suggest if you want to attract them stick to apples or try honey water or a commercial lorikeet mix from the pet store. Thank you
We originally used mixed bird seed but they only picked out the sunflower seeds. So for the last few years, sunflower seeds and our fresh fruit leftovers - apple and pear cores and what little is left on stone fruit.
We are not gardeners but there are a few bottle brush and grevilleas around that attract them as well here on the NSW south coast.
They come to my whistle of a morning and they will try to land on your hands. Currently they must be nesting as we are feeding only about 6 compared to the usual 30-40.
In the Readers Digest bird book is says they will travel up to 40 km a day to feed.

No sunflower seeds!!! These birds will starve if fed sunflower seeds. They eat powered nectur, dry or with water, fresh fruits and veg.

Yes, absoltuely agree with this post. If you want to feed these birds cut a apple in half, thread some string through it and hang it from a tree.

they wouldn't eat it if it was bad for them they are very smart birds and very nice birds aswell

@ionaoldboy And humans wouldn't eat saturated fats if it was bad for them too I guess, going by your logic that is.

If you're after specifically rainbow loris, get dry lori mix (and put a large water bowl nearby).
Keep in mind they can get very loud.
