5-strings are used especially in classical music, although I do know a few jazz bassplayers that use one too, with a lower B-string or a higher C-string... But I've never seen a full size one, the biggest I've seen is 7/8... All I've heard is that full size is just not handy to take with you, and difficult to play if you're not a giant... And terribly expensive :p
