  • Babbitt.

  • Sorry, but you missed A LOT of aspects of this bass line. This isn't to say that you're bad, in fact---I like your style A LOT====but you transcribed the G minor 7 lick wrong----he hits that G twice on the second part of the phrase, not once. I'll be posting my version soon, and I used a program to isolate the bass----Every note is in there.

  • hey buddy do u have a finger rest der,my p bass dont have, can i ask if its ok to put my thumb on the top of the pic up,tnx

  • hey buddy do you have a finger rest in der,my p bass dont have ,is it ok if iplace my thumb on top of pick up while im playing, tnx.

  • great job. you got the groove.

  • Like I said im a die hard Jamerson fan and I think I could say that this is definately Babbitt playing. The strings are way tooooo treble-iee to be the funk machine. Jamerson's strings were a lot more dead and you never heard any fret noise of any kind. The only part that sounds like it could actually be JJ is when he is hitting that Bottom note consistantly (at around 2:30) the bottom E string is slightly out of tune. Otherwise from then on to the end is defenately Babbitt JJ didnt play liketha

  • Absolutely Babbit!! He also played bass on Inner City Blues,Wholly Holy and Mercy Me from Whats Going On.The rest is Jamerson.

  • btw this isnt james sound pretty close to james but its actually bob babbitt james wouldnt play this he would probly play it a lil smoother then bob

  • @SOUNDBOYMIKE I don't think Babbitt played on this track. I checked out his web site and he doesn't credit himself with playing on this track.

  • @tbcass hmm i could be wrong its still a motown jam

  • immaculate touch. immaculate tone

  • Is that Ron Burgundy on yazz flute back there?

  • It's not about how hard it is to play. It's about how it moves you.

  • You don't know much about music or bass playing do you bigdog0800?

  • Keep on keeping on Bro!

  • bigdog0800 Hey fuckface, I bet you can't play bass at all you jerk. Why make stupid comments like that you stupid troll.

  • hey fucko dude sucks and you are a fag so get off his dick biotch ass nig.

  • bigdog0800 Hey troll, you don't like it here and you want to insult great bass players, fuck off and get a life Loser.

  • fuck you bigdog0800

  • Niiiice man. That tone is perfect for Jamerson-likeness! Groovin' and smooth, couldn't be better.

Do you have flats on that bass?

  • You handle the change (@ 5:00) very well

    Nice playing

  • How about Stevie's "We can work it out" with Bob on bass. That is straight up Motown and Bob shows he can hang.

  • fantastic!

  • Cool!

What kind of strings did you have on that P-bass?

  • That's some sweet playing man, keep it up! I'm jonesin' for a p-bass right now.

  • This album is a must for any bass player

  • I listen to this album over and over again and never tire of it

Everything - especially jamerson - is soo tight and smooth throughout.

  • Sounds great! You played it flawlessly! I'm going to agree with tbcass this was in fact Bob Babbit and not James Jamerson. Jamerson played the 1st half of the album from What's Goin On to God is Love. Babbit played from Mercy Mercy Me thru Inner City Blues.

  • Awesome! Wow!

  • Sublime.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Bob Babbitt play bass in this track? It doesn't sound like Jamerson's usual style and Babbit did play on some of the tracks from this album. It sounds like Babbitt to me.

  • You're right, Bob Babbit played on two tracks - "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Inner City Blues". It's definitely Jamerson - his sound and feel is unmistakable, especially in the freer section in the middle of the tune.

"Inner City Blues" is probably my favorite track on the album, but the bass playing kills it for me. It's two bass tracks (both played by Babbit), neither of which are very strong. The way they conflict with one another ruins an otherwise fantastic tune, IMO.

  • You may be right but my understanding was Jamerson played on "What's Going On" "What's Happening Brother" "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)" "Save the Children" "God Is Love"

While Babbit played on "Mercy Mercy Me "Right On" "Wholy Holy" "Inner City Blues"

To me, and I am also a bass player (36 years), "Right On" sounds more like Babbitt. I also disagree with your assessment of Babbitt's bass playing on the album. I think it's excellent.

  • Upon further research it seems you may be correct as Babbitt's own web site only credits him for Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues. I still say his playing is outstanding on those 2 songs, especially Mercy Mercy Me.

  • I should clarify - I'm not saying I dislike his playing per se; I honestly am not familiar enough with it to judge it. I just think that the way that track (Inner City Blues) was produced detracts from the groove, song, etc. That was certainly not Babbit's decision.

It seems you're a fan of Bob Babbit's playing - can you recommend some "essential" recordings?

  • @arcellus I feel the same way about Babbitt. I mean he's a good player and I would much rather know its him playing on anything rather than Carol Kaye. I am a die hard Jamerson fan. All my playing consist of his guidelines. I consider Jamerson the greatest bass player in the world. I just recently bought the deluxe edition of the album "whats goin on" I recommend it to any true jamerson fan. First time I heard Mercy Mercy me where you can actually here the bass very clear. Babbitt didnt do bad.

  • Great playing mate. 5 stars! You've really got the feel in perfect synch. It really helps to watch someone like you get into it that some kid reading tabs on a piece he knows really nothing on.

And I wanted to ask, you have the most interesting name ever... Arcellus. That is your first name, correct? Where did it come from?

  • Thanks for the comment - Arcellus is an old family name, coming Denmark about 6 generations back. And yes, it's my first name.

  • MR JAMERSON WOULD BE PROUD OF YOU

  • Thank you!

  • Great! Love your playing!

  • Thanks Tacyella11, great

  • Great playing! How are you getting these videos posted? The past four tunes I've attempted to post (in the past two weeks) have been getting rejected due to copyright.

  • How lame. I had a video of mine randomly removed for violating copyright recently...total bullshit but what can you do? :(

  • looks simplier than other of yours, it's great in bass playing that sometimes it's just about playing a couple of notes and stil it sounds great, esentional playing

  • Yep, pretty simple. This is some of Jamerson's best playing, IMO.

  • Hey dude,

Great playalong - love the transcription too! What software did you use to produce it, it's nice and clean. I use Sibelius 3 for producing basslines and transcriptions - but need to get something better.

    Keep up the good work!

    Paul
