Easy e minor riff to fall across if u play, they both have great songs and not so great, but Metallica not so great is just terrible shredding crap with lyrics that sound like they were writing by a smart ass 11 year old
@Koroar I'm sorry, how did anything I say make you think that I don't know what an opinion is. If you re-read everything I wrote, it's actually nothing more than my opinion. And what was your point? That I was dropped on my head as a baby?
Oh look, a riff that sounds similar! Woa, it's not like anyone could just come up with that easy ass riff!
Of course Metallica had to rip of a 20 year old band who was barely relevant when they were popular! Ya know, cause of all the good grunge band around them.
@ShdowSora Obviously you're a Metallica fan, but I still don't see your point. They ripped of Pearl Jam. It's really that simple. I mean, listen to it! (And honestly, man... I'm sure if it was Pearl Jam playing "Enter Sandman" and calling it something else, you would be ripping into Pearl Jam for plagiarising.) One way or the other... and I've said this for years... Metallica sucks. And now they are sucky thieves.
@Koroar Um. Maybe. But if I was, it certainly made me realize the difference between good music and bad. I didn't make Metallica suck. Nor did I ask them to rip off Pearl Jam. Don't blame me for this.
stop being such politically-correct bitches for once and accept the fact that both bands are not awesome. Metallica is some rancid shit, that is way out of comparison with PJ
This does not approach the level of "rip-off.". The melodic line is similar but not identical, and let's face it, they're both in E, by far the most common key for rock songs. Besides, Pearl Jam's riff used the perfect fifth, while Metallica's riff uses the diminished fifth, and that is a huge difference. Anyway, this is just one of about ten different musical parts in the Metallica song, and it's not even a main section, just a little transition part.
@ThorXMK are you fucking kidding? a semitone could be the difference between major and minor scale in context... so yeah, pretty big goddamn difference. As Victor Wooten put it, you're always one semitone apart from playing the perfect tune or from ruining the whole song.
@TehSorso I can play the melody from Mary Had a Little Lamb in a minor key instead and it would sound very different but it's still the melody from Mary Had a Little Lamb and it's still stolen.
@ThorXMK i'm not talking about turning a whole song from major to minor, i'm talking about replacing one single sound in a riff/melodic structure, of course with the normal rythmical changes... compare the main riff of unforgiven 1 with the main riff of black sabbath's black sabbath. A whole humungous difference made by one semitone and a rythmic change. And they're definitely not similar.
They also ripped off DRI with the King Nothing bass line. Can't remember the DRI song, but its off of Definition. Stop buying Metallica records and going to their shows and giving them publicity. They're the Carlos Mencias of metal! Are they even metal anymore?

@metalmonkey97 it's impossible for PJ to be in the HoF, it needs to be 25 years after a band's first release to be up for consideration. PJ will be in on the first ballot. If you ever actually listened to them you wouldn't sound like such an idiot, Eddie Vedder sings perfectly clear. eV's lyrics are way more meaningful than Metallica's as well. That being said I love Metallica, but if you want to be an uneducated, ignorant, and retarded sounding individual, be my guest.
i agree with the commenters below, its similar but its kind of a generic riff. for blatant rip offs, look up "coldplay rips off...", these occurred especially around viva la vida. i dont think they gave kraftwerk any credit but i could be wrong. at least now they're giving credit to the 'compositional elements' they lift from past songwriters.
there is no such thing as original music. you only have 12 notes anyway. you don't rip off music, you just take it and make it your own. for instance paul mccartney used a very similar progression to a classical music song he heard when he wrote blackbird.
Why are so many of you self appointed advocates for these bands? Like it? Then listen to it. Don't? Then leave it. The variations in different songs sounding similar makes them the bands own. Look over classical music there's loads of metal riffs in there but I don't hear some toff bleating on about the injustice.
guys, everything has been taken already, every chord progression, every riff, everything! its not "ripping off" if you make it your own with the rest of the song.
You shut the fuck up fag. Pearl jam has never, and never will be as popular nor as good as metallica. Metallica not only sounds better with style and rythm, but they are more popular, and are more intriquite. Suck my dick, pearljam dick hardee.
@tnn1 LOL you got me there. I totally forgot that Zeppelin ripped off more bands and artists then any body else in history. So I guess my example doesn't really count.
It's like the 'infinite monkeys' theory. There are millions, if not billions, of people writing songs today. There are only so many permutations of notes that can be played on a guitar. Odds are, eventually two songs can overlap. There's a name for that situation, I just don't know what it is. One time I wrote a song that I thought was awesome, and then I played it for someone who immediately told me it sounded like a Foo Fighters song, a band I've never listened to. It just happens sometimes.
u guys are stupid, i doubt they intentionally ripped off. did anyone ever think its a coincident? ther are tons of artists and riffs out ther, its not unlikely that they would make a riff that sounds similar
it's just simple you have a tons of riff and if you want a riff that sounds only like you it's just impossible. So you can't use certain parts in your song cause another band has token it. I wouldn't care if another riff would sound like my riff if i would have a song :P
I would be happy because it means they think it's good
lol this is like one riff jesus christ, its more likely a coincidence than anything, some riffs just sound good so people use em without knowing someone else already has, i dont think metallica was listening to pearl jam much anyway.
If Metallica RAELLY wanted to b original theyd invent there own notes and play those not rip off the same western muisic weve used for centuries. QUIT STEELING U LAZIES
there is evidence of ripoff on several metallica songs. but would they steal from a million-selling band like Pearl Jam? if they did, though, it would show the ultimate contempt for their fans, like they would never catch on
nothing is new, especially in rock, but don't complain about fans sharing music (Lars) or sampling when even your own music is questionable. even if done unconsciously doesn't it prove that ideas are just in the air, thus invalidating copyright of music? big step i know...
Wow this is unbelievable. I love Metallica, but I can't believe they would take this riff and run with it. I guess every artist has done this at least once in their career.
From a guitarists perspective, the riff used in both of these songs is relatively easy to figure out individually, and it is really fun to play around with.
yeah.. and the chorus of MEGADETH'S "endgame" song on "endgame" album says: "This is the end of the world, this is THE END OF THE LINE, this is the end of your life, this is the endgame"... SO WHAT?
big fucking deal, the songs sound similar blah blah blah. The only people who complain about bands making similar songs are people who don't know shit about music or musicians. Yes, bands take riffs and ideas from songs and make their own songs. Is that wrong? Fuck no because that's how you make music. It's not like they stole an entire song and what not. Famous musicians will be the first ones to tell you that taking bits from other songs is how they make music. Get over it.
Easy e minor riff to fall across if u play, they both have great songs and not so great, but Metallica not so great is just terrible shredding crap with lyrics that sound like they were writing by a smart ass 11 year old

@allstar340 I do listen to them my dad likes em and im with him alot so yeah

i agree with the commenters below, its similar but its kind of a generic riff. for blatant rip offs, look up "coldplay rips off...", these occurred especially around viva la vida. i dont think they gave kraftwerk any credit but i could be wrong. at least now they're giving credit to the 'compositional elements' they lift from past songwriters.
drums4ry 8 months ago
I remember discovering the similarity on my own and laughing. You know why? Because Metallica is so much better than Pearl Jam, thats why

STohill101 8 months ago
Even it is a "rip off" metallica makes it sound better
TheMetalliholica 9 months ago
there is no such thing as original music. you only have 12 notes anyway. you don't rip off music, you just take it and make it your own. for instance paul mccartney used a very similar progression to a classical music song he heard when he wrote blackbird.
blackzabbathfan 9 months ago
Sounds similar but not really a rip off
DEFINEMETALisBACK 9 months ago
tbh why are we arguing?? musicians get inspiration from other musicians/bands or it just may be a massive conicidence

The Metallica song sounds more like Animal than Why Go.

Hear the audio only. It sounds like the two songs are one.
GuitarHeroOsbourne 9 months ago
maybe the two bands were just playing in the studio and they both came up with the same riff
steelmetal96 9 months ago
Why are so many of you self appointed advocates for these bands? Like it? Then listen to it. Don't? Then leave it. The variations in different songs sounding similar makes them the bands own. Look over classical music there's loads of metal riffs in there but I don't hear some toff bleating on about the injustice.
Gibby1509 9 months ago
Yes
chords1983 10 months ago
guys, everything has been taken already, every chord progression, every riff, everything! its not "ripping off" if you make it your own with the rest of the song.

mtallica hasn't recorded a single song worth listening to for 20 years.Lars is a conceited putz.

The end of the line isn't that popular of Metallica songs, and stop worrying about who rips off who, just listen to the music and enjoy it.
TheHyperactiveGaming 10 months ago
Yeah, but the Metallica version dounds better.

dounds better? shut the fuck up the better song is with pearl jam
damanjoseperez 10 months ago
@damanjoseperez
You shut the fuck up fag. Pearl jam has never, and never will be as popular nor as good as metallica. Metallica not only sounds better with style and rythm, but they are more popular, and are more intriquite. Suck my dick, pearljam dick hardee.

Pearl Jam ripped off Led-Zeppelin but no one complains? Get a life losers, bands always get inspiration from others.
Theothersound 10 months ago
@Theothersound That's because led Zeppelin rips everyone off, so there's no need to complain.lol
tnn1 9 months ago
@tnn1 LOL you got me there. I totally forgot that Zeppelin ripped off more bands and artists then any body else in history. So I guess my example doesn't really count.
Theothersound 9 months ago
metallica has faded, pearl jam is still the best live band on the planet. typical of pearl jam playing chess while other bands are playing checkers

@SpaceRitual Yep, a generic riff for a generic album.
otutitsnileameuQ 6 months ago
It's like the 'infinite monkeys' theory. There are millions, if not billions, of people writing songs today. There are only so many permutations of notes that can be played on a guitar. Odds are, eventually two songs can overlap. There's a name for that situation, I just don't know what it is. One time I wrote a song that I thought was awesome, and then I played it for someone who immediately told me it sounded like a Foo Fighters song, a band I've never listened to. It just happens sometimes.
MarKSlamS621 11 months ago
u guys are stupid, i doubt they intentionally ripped off. did anyone ever think its a coincident? ther are tons of artists and riffs out ther, its not unlikely that they would make a riff that sounds similar
giglfoosm 11 months ago
Angel Witch - Angel of Death (main Riff) - Metallica , For whom the Bell Tools (Main riff)
check out that rip-off if you haven't heard it.
we could go on and on...

Look up nightmare by crooked x and wasted years by iron maiden the corus in nightmare totally ripped off wasted years
Acemaster803 11 months ago
man, anybody does that riff, just think, a normal drums riff, and a normal scale of bass/guitar (;
habborico1001 11 months ago
it's just simple you have a tons of riff and if you want a riff that sounds only like you it's just impossible. So you can't use certain parts in your song cause another band has token it. I wouldn't care if another riff would sound like my riff if i would have a song :P
I would be happy because it means they think it's good
VinCeXMS 11 months ago
@VinCeXMS yes nd i wuld be happier cus i can sue them for millions :)
ChineseTOP 11 months ago
lol this is like one riff jesus christ, its more likely a coincidence than anything, some riffs just sound good so people use em without knowing someone else already has, i dont think metallica was listening to pearl jam much anyway.
metallicatilldeathhh 11 months ago
ya too similar..SUE!
petefader 11 months ago
If Metallica RAELLY wanted to b original theyd invent there own notes and play those not rip off the same western muisic weve used for centuries. QUIT STEELING U LAZIES

@CDMVette
Invent their own notes..........
HOW THE FUCK DO YOU INVENT NOTES!!!!!!!!!!
Clike666ness 11 months ago
there is evidence of ripoff on several metallica songs. but would they steal from a million-selling band like Pearl Jam? if they did, though, it would show the ultimate contempt for their fans, like they would never catch on
nothing is new, especially in rock, but don't complain about fans sharing music (Lars) or sampling when even your own music is questionable. even if done unconsciously doesn't it prove that ideas are just in the air, thus invalidating copyright of music? big step i know...

Wow this is unbelievable. I love Metallica, but I can't believe they would take this riff and run with it. I guess every artist has done this at least once in their career.
dtbjjrb 1 year ago
i think they were just using their riff because they thought it sounded really cool and wanted to make it their own.
cgmnb2010 1 year ago
