  • and I see a future locomotive engineer on his father's shoulders...

  • a great pair of 4-8-4s

  • excelente video, una gran comparacion de las pesadas maquinas a vapor ,con las grandes maquinas modernas de ahora, sin duda un gran avance de la tecnologia.

  • these really put diesels to shame

  • This video makes a perfect reason why you should not attempt to cross the track immediately after one train passes through a railroad crossing with more than one track, because there's a good chance another train going the other direction on another track could go through!

  • i hop they do this agian

  • ggod thing it came before the intermodal!

  • good thing it came before the frieght!

  • nice video the meet was a nice touch

  • @jedihunter80 lol totally

  • LOL that old lady doesn't care.

  • High a STEAM for these locos that are still running!!

  • @HaloCE14 if you look long and hard you can find photos of sp4449 hauling a couple double stacks, some railroad said that if you want to travel our rails you will do some work.

  • Locomotives like these were used more around world war 2. This train bring to mind a soldier going to fight the nazis or japs. Or even returning from war.

  • What is the horsepower for the SP 4449?

Also, what is the horsepower for those diesels?

  • @Jemalacane steam hp is classified as tractive effort 71,173 lbs

the lead diesel are sd60m series at a hp rating at 3,800

the other 2 are es44s at a hp rating at 4,000

  • Too bad that stupid double-stack train had to come along before you could finish filming the whole consist.

  • Blow the horn! In addition to the steam whistle the Daylight locomotives also had air horns that sounded a lot like the diesels. My mother wanted me to know what steam trains sounded like so she bought me a record of steam trains when I was a small child in the '60s. The recordings were made on the final runs of a number of locos, including a Daylight. Strangely cool to hear the steam "chug-chug-chug" punctuated by the air horn blast instead of the whistle. The whistle did give a peep once.

  • theres two trains SP 449 and UP 844

  • Awesome sight to behold.

  • I like the way that lady at the beginnings ignoring the train and filming the helicopter or something lol (at least it looks that way)

  • Did the crossing gate hit that dude's truck?

  • No. It just looks like it did.

  • i live in va and i love the 611 i wish they would get her running again the 1218 has been gutted she is just a " statue" now it makes me sick. it is all behind the money.

  • 1218 is not gutted, where the heck did you ever hear that? incorrect information. I belong to the chapter down there.

    Len.

  • The 4449 traveling travelling all the way to Michigan & back this summer is something special. Especially since 611 & 1218 have been silent for almost 15 years.

  • Who owns the #1218?

  • It's owned by Norfolk & Southern but on loan to the Museum.

    Len.

  • nice meeting of past and present

  • awsome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Woot, 4449's coming to Michigan in July!!!!

  • Now we have to see the 4294 restored and operational.

  • Comment removed

  • you gotta love how everybody walks away when the diesel engines show up.

ok, shows over, nothing to see here...lol

  • Random intermodal train!

  • this is retarded every daylight video is taken off

  • Awesome video!

  • Nice! i sure would like to see the 4449 make an exscursion run to so. cal.

  • @trainkids that requires a lot of money and begging the up to let the 4449 run on their tracks, the 4449 has what are called friction bearings and they need to be oiled every so often, but up requires engines on their track to have roller bearings so as not to tie up the railroad.

  • @trainman93

The spring pad lubricators on the 4449, only on the drivers as everything else has roller bearings, do not need to be "oiled every so often". The oil "sponge" underneath the axle in the oil cellar holds and retains oil while one of the mechanical lubricators continously pumps oil thru a hole in the brass and babbit.

  • Old meets new.

    Great video!!!

  • Nice, but I wish that the dumb Helos would stay out of the area. It tends to Spoil the Unique Sound of an approaching Steam train

  • Good find. Thanks.

  • @powerlinefixer oh hell yea!

  • 3751 isn't the largest.

  • Correct the UP Challenger 3985 is 4-6-6-4 search HI-Ball should be one of the top videos shows it running at close to seventy on its way back to Denver

  • Beautiful shot! Nice meet, too. Those are sometimes hard to plan.

I'm so glad the 4449 was the lead. Nothing against the 844, it's just the 4449 is so much prettier! :)

Keep an eye out for the 4449's 2008 Holiday Express videos in a couple more weeks...

  • I agree, 844 is nice but 4449 kicks ass

  • notice this, NO DIESEL ASSISTANCE!! YAY!!

  • I heard hte 4449 is going to do a double head with the nkp 587 in a midwest excursion!

  • Where/Who did you hear that from?

  • Where did you hear that?

  • We can't even get the 587 off of our own line because csx ripped up the switches to our line so we are isolated, plus there was a boiler defect found recntly prolonging the restorationtiel 2010 or 2011 for completion and there is currently nothing scheduled. sounds cool, but im sorry to tell you its all just wishful thinking.

  • As it turned out, NKP 765 (not 587) and the 4449 DID show up in Owosso MI this summer. Unfortunately, MILW 261 couldn't make it and Pere Marquette 1225 was under the weather. Otherwise, there wuold have been a couple really SWEET double headers out on both excursions!!

  • The 4449 is operational and usually runs a couple excursions a year, sometimes more.

  • that was way cool, vintage meets modern

  • Old School meets Modern Machines.

    Great catch of both trains.

Awesome shot of the SP 4449 and the UP 844.

I really wish I could ride that train.

  • to hear this while my bluegrass rails CD is playing gives mew waves of goosebumps!!!!

  • that is america!

  • wonderful sounds there and nice camera work ... amazing what can happen in two minutes ... sure were a lot of flat wheels on that double stack...

  • i just can't get enough of the different and awesome sounds in that video... (minus the whirlybird in the beginning)

i play it almost once a week.

when the second train goes by, my whole floor rumbles from the bass of the diesels from my subwoofer.

  • Awesome video. Thanks!

  • Old School meets New School.

    Impressive Video.

  • What a beast!!!!!

  • @TIRtilt i agree haha

  • Thas cool as hell!

  • yes. Those steam engines are indeed more powerful that the modern engines. However, they cannont access 5000 hp from a standstill without slipping.

  • Although some steamers may be more powerful on paper, a modern diesel has more workable power. A steamer develops peak horsepower near it's top speed only. At low speeds it's just a fraction of it's peak rating. Diesel-electrics can produce peak power from low speed to maximum speed. That being said, I still would rather see a steamer.

  • Well said. But then again, no machine gives you spiritual and preformable satisfaction than a steam locomotive.

  • @powerlinefixer actually diesel/gas powered motors as well as electrically powered motors produce their max hp at a their minimum rpm but you were right about the steam reaching max at high speed. which is why they can easily go 110 while pulling a load

  • it appears the UP 4360 is K5LA equipped! nice catch all around!!

  • It does have a K5LA but it's engine 4380.

  • Everyone stops tapeing when the modern UP comes! LOL.

  • 2 of the world's largest operating Non articulated steam locomotives in the world coupled together! Wow! I hope theses beasts keep running until the end of the world!

  • now we can only hope that N&W 611 gets out of the VMT and back onto the main.

  • Yhea really. I just got a model of the 611 and I am thinking about getting the 844. Did the 611 and 844 ever run together? If so I can double head the models like this but with the 611.

  • No the 611 & 844 never doubleheaded.

  • What are the odds of getting that shot. Even had an ACe trailing the consist on the freight.

  • nice speed. i also like your first pass too with the amount of speed. know how much these things can get up too?

  • The SP4449 has 80 inch drivers and 5500hp which gives it a top speed of around 110mph. In the video it's going about half that speed, maybe even a bit slower. I don't know about the 844.

  • Was probably a 'hot' freight- if it was a UPS train, they have priority above anything else on the line.

  • true but a nuclear waste train has the highest priority overall

  • I love the trash train!

  • Great Video. I thought the woman in the white top was funny - she didn't even look at the locos until they were right there. She most probably thought - 'Oh, its just another Northern.....' !

  • NICE VIDEO

  • cool Double header! That freight train was mosting fast. Great video!

  • geez that freight poped out of nowhere, could of caused some injury if you were not paying attention and crossed the tracks...

  • Very true. I think most of the trains in that area pass at 50 to 70 mph

  • yeah why didn't the UP intermodal stop and wait for the 4449/844 doubleheader?

  • I noticed that too. It also cycles slower. They must have dropped the voltage to it.

  • hey, where in castle rock is that?

  • It's the Cowlitz Street rail crossing. I was north of the crossing

  • how come Union Pacific never uses the ditch light flashers?

  • i wanted to kno about that too. im mean CSX NS CONRAIL use all the time .

  • Knowing UP, it's probably because ditch light flashers cost .000002 cents more than regular ditch lights.

  • NICE CATCH!!!!!!!!!!! Two great steam engines and a freight!!!!!! Nice job!

  • Nice job! What was with the lady taking a picture of the chopper when the steam engine is right next to her? She is at the right in the beginning of the video.

  • Thanks! I tell myself that the lady is taking a picture of the kid next to her. That way I still maintain my hope for humankind.

  • Nice timing for the frieght to come in

  • Cool stuff! That intermodal train really kicked up alot of dust.

  • That freight train looks just like the one that derailed in Dupont recently!

  • Thanks for the comments and ratings!!

  • Good quality video. Nice job. Was someone chasing the train in a helicopter?

  • I think the chopper was chasing for the local news. I was a bit disappionted because it fouled up some good audio. Oh well.

  • I noticed that. Nobody wants to hear a helicopter when you can hear double headed steam.

I also noticed that UP 4380 had a 5 chime horn, only about 40 of the SD70M's do.

  • dont recognize where at in c.r. this is??

  • It's the Cowlitz Street rail crossing. I was north of the crossing.

  • AWESOME!

  • A1 Doubleheaded MAINLINE Steam Meet!! over the top man

  • Mixing a little of the old and clean with the new and dirty. I like it.

  • Funny- The containers on the southbound freight were full of garbage. LOL.

  • are you sure? They could be loaded with goods made in Taiwan, China, Singapore or Japan

  • Yeah, like I said, they were full of garbage.
