@jesse17ful they are different in some ways though. Testament is way heavier and faster, while Metallica is just as good, just a bit slower and lighter, but none the less good. They are also from different decades. Metallica 80s and testament late 90s and 2000s. I like them both equally and listen to them both avidley. I AM NOT TAKING SIDES

It was hardly new things; and while I like both bands I haven't been impressed by some of either band's works.

Testament have had two fairly bad albums, and Metallica has had a few too. I now have better insight and prefer not to compare bands; indeed, the term big four should not exist simply not exist.

Also, on the subject of Death Magnetic, I have never been a fan of it dues to bland songs like Cyanide and My Apocalypse weighing it down, but Judas Kiss was pretty decent.

This is a more logical comment. Many bands don't sound the same as when they started.

However, Testament has changed quite a bit. Their first albums were pure thrash, but now they have a death metal influence too.

Pantera is probably the greatest example of all, started as a cheesy glam-rock band and then becoming a groove/thrash giant.

The problem is that with Metallica's recent works, one doesn't really try new things (DM) and the other tries but falls flat on its face (St. A).

DM also had a bunch of songs that would have benefited from being shorter, especially inspid tracks like Cyanide, which generally are dull, as well as otherwise great tracks like The Judas Kiss, which could have benefited from just being a bit shorter.

Oh, and Kirk's solos were pretty bad. Not as diverse as earlier works and he had constant wah. Lars' drumming wasn't great either, it was a little too straightforward.

Are you REALLY using popularity as an argument point? That's like saying that Lady Gaga is better than Nuclear Assault because she sold more albums.

Secondly, Testament did actually come very close to matching the popularity of the Big 4 in the very late 80s since Practice What You Preach was a very popular thrash album at the time. In many ways, Testament was superior, as they right more technically demanding music while staying catchy and melodic.
