  • IT IS DREAM THEATER. LISTEN TO THE END. THE VERY VERY END. That is Lifting Shadows Off a Dream from the unplugged show in '98. IT MAY NOT BE THAT SHOW, but it is from that time... I win.

  • @Mechanix1911 you realize that it's possible to cover lifting shadows too, right? it's not DT.

  • @Sage80 It is DT. Based on the sound of their equipment and the sound of the audience, it certainly is from the Falling Into Infinity era, around the album release date, probably before it. I don't know why any cover band would imitate them, and play the songs from that era live.

  • This is a cover, so what? It's Dream Theater's music. The band played well that's all it matters.

  • great cover

  • Na, the man with the stick's not MP

  • Good for a cover, but not good enough to be DT.

  • I'm a guitarrist and a big John Petrucci fan, and I have to say that it could perfectly be Petrucci playing. I would say it's him for sure.

There are very few guitarrists with that technique level!

  • While this isn't Dream Theater, they did a damn good job at it!

  • First of all, the majority of DT fans could listen to this and tell you it's NOT them playing it... although these guys did a damn good job. On the genre thing, they are not strictly metal. They embrace many styles of music in throughout their catalog..."The Silent Man, Anna Lee, a good deal of SFAM, Solitary Shell"...I could go on for days. Their diversity is one of the reasons I love them.

  • this has to be dream theater.. its not a very good recording but it was played extremely accurately, and not only that.. that is definitely JP playing

  • If this is a cover, the guitarist really articulates Petrucci. This could be Dream Theater but somehow I get the feeling that it's just a top-notch cover. :-)

  • good version. but CLEARLY, it's a cover. with a few flaws on it but i still like it

  • Lol yeah this sounds exactly like DT would perform it.

  • This OBVIOUSLY is Dream Theater.

  • It's definitely JP...I have this whole concert on cd. Its from their "Unplugged" session in Rotterdam...6/21/98 I believe.

  • Ok before people talk more nonsense, this IS Dream Theater, from the "An Intimate Evening with Dream Theater" Shows in '98.

  • Yeah, you're not listening to 'Myung' here. If you listened to the bass you would hear this doesn't sound at all like Dream Theater.

    And it doesn't matter!

This is one of my favorite songs so shut the hell up! :P

  • First, John Petrucci would never play like that.

Second, Dream Theater would never play that song. And there's no point to.

  • That is definately John Petrucci. If u can't hear that you haven't heard enough of his solo's :-)

  • @Binze86 So listening to their whole discography+other projects John participated is "not enough"? Sorry to say, aside of this one, there are no footages of DT playing this, and I really like listening to bootlegs.

During their whole career I don't think their bass was that loud and there are so many other reasons for me to believe it's not them. Don't just run around saying "definately" (definitely) if you don't have any evidences. Videos/accurate setlists or it didn't happen.

  • @RockRulez124 What the hell? hahah How is that not JP?

    goodness me.

  • @RockRulez124 There's no point to playing Hell's Kitchen? WTF does that even mean? Is there a point to playing any song? and how do you know Petrucci woule never play like this? The picking articulation here sounds a lot like Petrucci.

  • @ShredST Err, sorry, my mistake, probably meant Myung would never sound like that. The bass is way too loud in this version.

And the "no point to" was referred to this - they haven't even included this song in Falling Into Infinity Demos (which is kinda the way they wanted FII to be), and other songs represent both feel and technique way better than this one. Looks kinda odd to me how there's only one audio footage of them "playing" this song.

  • @RockRulez124 ??? really?

  • hay algun recital en qu salga esta cancion tocada por ellos ???

  • @johnpetrucci16 yo tampoco he encontrado esta cancion en vivo en video !!!!!!!!!!! es magnifica!!

  • XD ok , is there any show where Hell's Kitchen is played by them??

(Sorry for my bad English XD)

  • sorry, but i havent find any complete video =(, and your english is bad as mine, so dont worry, im not american or britain too

  • why?

  • if its not them, they're pretty damn good anyway

  • 3:15 and on always blows me away

  • john petrucciì's bending are not so stoned! -.-

  • music is what matters.....Dream Theater are just incredible ...

  • Listen to the so called fans, it seems there are five people at the concert. DT's concerts has thousands of people.

  • Woohooh!

  • Maybe it's them, just that the quality sound sucks!

  • Si k tiene versiones de directo pero no la toca entera, solo hace medley.

  • why DT dont have live versions of this song??

  • yes this is most likely recorded in '96... It is Dream Theater... They played a lot in small clubs in that time.. this is defo in some of their bootlegs...

  • They do Gordon Ramsey proud

  • hahha, nice xD

  • I don't believe this is Dream Theatre. Whoever played this just doesn't have the same feel (it feels like rock). Also, the drums seem too simple to have been played by Mike Portnoy. Finally, this seems kind of rushed. I've never seen Dream Theatre rush before. Ever.

  • Yeah, Im pretty sure this is not Dream Theater. It really does not have the same feel.

  • The drums are exact.. Go hear the song and compare..

  • No they're not. Why don't you compare?

  • Isn't DT a rock band?

Plus who else has this same combination of sounds?

It sounds exactly like Petrucci's guitar, Mike's cymbal set ( plus snare at that LT time), plus Derek's synth.

And who says DT plays perfectly all the time?

  • rock?! they're fucking progressive metal

  • Also progressive rock.

  • @illidanwashere772 Which is progressive rock+heavy metal.

  • Man, there are several types of rock; rock & roll, rockabilly and rock metal.

Yeah, DT is progressive metal... Therefore, progressive rock metal :)

  • of course is not dream!.... deaf!!

  • before you guys kill yourself trying to find out if this is DT, why dont you try to find out where this audio clip is from?!

  • holly shit.... awesome tottaly.... this song makes me want to cry i don't know why

  • awesome ..... off course is dream theater, only john petrucci's picking sounds like this.

ps: no need to mention people in south america

  • you guys are sure it isn't DT?

if its dt or not, for me this fucking rocked. If its a tribute band, you guys rock, it sounded really good.

  • This is obviously not Dream Theater.

It's a damn good cover though.

  • this isnt dt drums sounds off, if its petrucci he cant do his solo properly so obviously its someone else. Keyboards are using different effects.

I'm 100% its not them. Overall the bands performance was average.

Dream Theater does not play average they are ball to the wall everytime!

  • i didnt want it to come to this, but dude, youre a fucking idiot!

  • lol, music noobs make me lol

  • again, especially people who say "noobs", are gay..

you think the people would be cheering that loud for a cover band? get your ears together faggit,.

  • so your calling me gay?

your calling him a fag when thousands of straight people say noob.

here try this your a frigin n00b get over it and get over yourself

  • very right, they have good songs but this put is the entire universe in your ears

  • people in south america would murder you for saying that

  • this is not DT, drummer sounds like he doesn't have double base drum. Anyhow, the band plays well.

  • Portnoy doesnt use double bass in this song.

but this is not DT I'm almost positive

  • i cant believe people are all saying this isnt DT, to all of those guys, you have no ear! have you ever listened to petrucci or protnoy play? its very obviously Dream Theater, im a DIEHARD FAN, trust me!

  • ive been listening to dt since 1992 its not them....

  • questi non sono i DREAM non fate i furbini è una cover. si sente che non è petrucci. bravi veramente. ma spacciarvi per i dream theater...questo è peccato. andrete all inferno per questo. ahahaha

  • If this is Dream Theater (wich I doubt), they really had an off day XD

  • next time you do a cover say it is a FUCKING COVER and not disguise it as the real thing.

    asshole.

  • What he said.

  • Can't be them at all. As soon as i heard the snare it was a dead giveaway. Also, the real song doesnt end that way with a low chord. It ends brilliantly with a high note or chord on the guitar and a run through the drums. Even if it wasnt done the same way, it still isnt dt.

  • It was a good cover, but next time, specify.

  • Definitely not the real DT. You can tell first off by the drum's sound. Portnoy is a goddamn perfectionist and would never allow a show to go on with a snare like that. The guitar work is off key a few times, especially in the solo. Lastly, the solos aren't Petrucci-clean. You know what I mean. Petrucci doesn't do sloppy solos. EVER. The guitarist is good, no doubt about that. He doesn't play as well as Petrucci though.

  • Just listen to the first seconds, DT never test their instruments during the show. Great cover though

  • dt doesnt play hells kitchen live

  • They have played this track live in the past -- just very rarely. See the "Acoustic at the Electric Factory" bootleg. This version doesn't sound like the one on that cd though.

  • they did on the FII tour

  • Re - "anyone who thinks this is not DT is deaf."

Dead on. Anyone who does sure is deaf

  • Absolutely,this is a cover!!!the sounds aren't the DT's sound's,first the Mike's drum,the keyboards and the speed of the song...everything isn't in Dt's style!!!it's a beautiful cover,really..it's not easy,but this isn't an original DT's performance!!!

    P.S.Mike portnoy can't play so fuckin'normally!!

  • anyone who thinks this is not DT is deaf.

  • This is DT. You can tell by the feel and articulation of the guitar parts. It's most certainly John Petrucci on the guitar. I would be willing to bet that this can be none other than Dream Theater.

  • if this is Dream Theater (and i really doubt it), they were playing without Mike Portnoy.

  • Well, there are some reasons that I think this song is a cover.

First, a realy small crowd. Second, the guitar solos doesn't sound like Petricciss's. Third, drums, it sound to smooth. And finaly, the effects that Jordan uses on the keys are way diferent that we hear in this one.

    Great cover though

  • Yep, DT never played this song live.

  • First off, it's spelled Petrucci, and second off, Jordan didn't record with Dream Theater during FIF, it would have been Derek.

  • Even if the drums may be a little sketchy, I think you're gonna be hard pressed to find anyone who can quite play the guitar like the guy does on here.

I vote it IS Dream Theater.

  • for the solos i think is not dream theater

  • Def DT, this was back when DS wasn't kicked out yet i think.

No one, and i mean no one, except for DT can play hell's kitchen and sound genuine.

  • It's definitely Dream Theater. It sounds like this is from the shows they did before Falling Into Infinity was release. At the end of this video, they start to play an unreleased track "The Way It Used To Be." It's DT. This is probably one of the first performances of the song.

  • This IS Dream Theater. It's a very old live, and that's how bad they can arrange songs when there's only one guitar. Sounds better when you're there though. About Portnoy, well sometimes he just isn't inspired. It is not rare for him to play HK with a pure shuffle feel, which sounds like shit compared to the syncopated stuff on the studio version.

  • this is a cover version..,and not Dream Theater.

    and i'm sure about that.

  • Well, then it's a nice cover.

VERGOGNATEVI IGNORANTIIII

  • I have it hard to belive It`s Dream Theater who is playing this liver performance!

It`s not at all Mike Portnoys way to play drums...

  • Yeah. You might be right.

  • agreed not him playing like that

  • Best song ever!!!

  • God I love this song

  • where do you get it?

  • I downloaded the song using ares. It said it was a rare version.
