Don't compare both of them, people says portishead is better because this song is their song, same thing if portishead do a creep cover, people will say radiohead is better,,the original song is always better..
@RyanTheNavigator, what's wrong with radiohead fans is that they all seem to think that radiohead is the best band in the modern days of music. I've heard from die hard fans that they were better than beatles, pink floyd etc. "it's still great compared to almost any other band,'
@xRyan5, in contrast to In Rainbows, King of Limbs was utter shit. Everything was so slow and they tried once again to tweak their music style, but it was unsuccessful this time. I can only hope they produce something better.
@YankTheYank I stopped reading when I saw "In Rainbows". You make a huge mistake when you compare a new album to previous ones. The King of Limbs isn't my favorite Radiohead album either, but I have enough sense to know that it's still great compared to almost any other band. And even if it wasn't, a band is more than just their last album. They remain my favorite band because they released so many consistently amazing albums before it.
@Dipseyy143 I get why you'd think that, but I do think they are THAT great. There aren't many bands out there who have shown as much consistent improvement and ambition as Radiohead, while still making brilliant songs; still experimenting and innovating; still making music for the right reasons; and somehow still staying popular in the mainstream. Radiohead have made me feel emotions that I didn't know existed and I think that's a beautiful thing to come from a bunch of guys arranging sounds.
@Dipseyy143 'Overrated' is such a stupid, meaningless word... Every band has die hard fans who act like the artists are gods. There is nothing special about that when it comes to Radiohead.
@superwiicrazy, wow. Big words. You might want to check on that. Because lately, Radiohead's music has been sucking pretty bad. You heard the latest album?
@YankTheYank I disliked King Of Limbs on first listen, but now I love it. Happens almost everytime with Radiohead, because something somehow mysteriously makes me stick with it.
That fucker who said covering this song is an honour is a complete idiot. David Cook, that douchebag, covered Eleanor Rigby. Is it an honour for the Beatles?
@drjandoedels Portishead doesn't need honor: they are Radiohead's peers and stand on their own (and I say this with Radiohead being my favorite band of all time).
My two favourite bands, thoms voice is amazing and so is beths, but are very different styles. I have to say though, portisheads first album and the 1st half of the second album is they're best work.
@drjandoedels they cover a smiths song.... and i thin its an honor to COVER a smiths song... and its must be an honor to cover a portishead song too...
woahh I was really wanting to cover this Portishead song and found out my favorite band did it! thought yorke was gonna play the beats thru the laptop at any moment, fuckin great cover!
Please don't think this as an honor, it's just people who love music, loving music, doing what comes natural to them. There is no winner, honor, or end. It's just understanding about what feels right and what stays strong in your head.
There is one problem here. If youtube *remove* the dislike button, how can they delete users who press said dislike button, since it would no longer exist? ;)
que increible ver la sensibilidad de los dos...la musica les toca profundamente sobretodo a yorke...hail to the softness in musicians hearts like them
Radiohead didn't play this to top the original, they are paying hommage, you complete and utter idiots, especially the people who bang on about how "the smiths" original was better, no shit, radiohead just like playing covers not to improve or better them but out of respect and for fun.
More range does not equal a better singer. What good would it do to know what squealing, ear shattering highs or growling lows Yorke or Bellamy could hit? If it helps, think about their relative merits this way: Bellamy would do better than Yorke on American Idol. But is that what you want?
@coolandthejew Right, but pmac said Bellamy was more "technically" sound. Technicality is a quantitative measure not qualitative. I wasn't making a normative statement on who was better sounding to my ear. I was attempting to establish that the only "technical" way to establish any one singer's skill is by range.
@pmac24 a while back I found both of their highest recorded vocal notes as well as the lowest. While Thom Yorke only has about 3 or 4 notes on Bellamy at the top of his range, the bottom of his range he has a full 3/4 octave on him.
Anything more than a 5th of range difference is astronomical. That's not even the same stratosphere. It's possible that Thom has recorded lower notes, but I don't buy for one second that he was '3/4' of an octave more lower range PLUS a couple notes in his upper. That is way too big of a gap for two singers who are clearly both tenors.
I'm not sure where you get that. I'm a singer myself and cover a lot of both Muse and Radiohead. They are equally challenging range-wise. Bellamy belts more and Yorke uses more falsetto. Again, I think they're both great singers, but it's the emotion and haunting quality that allows me to never tire of Yorke's voice.
Bellamy, Beth, and Thom Yorke are all amazing singers. It's all a matter of preference after that. Yorke to me, has the best voice because it has a haunting quality to it that simply can't be emulated. Bellamy is probably more 'technically' sound but to me cannot compare in anyway emotionally to what Yorke creates. Just my opinion.
@pmac24 i love beth and thom's voices but could care less about bellamy's. it's definitely a matter of preference. beth and thom have so much genuine emotion in their voices and bellamy just sounds kind of slick to me.
That's my whole thing. Making a pretty sound for the sake of it is fine, but nothing compared to when it is combined with emotion and brilliant songwriting. Beth also has that haunting nature to her voice. And to me, as songwriters, Portishead and Radiohead blow Muse away. That's what I respect most. They bring you into their world.
I dont think his singing is horrible, as someone said with modern music singing at all should be respected but I realy dont know many voices that can compete with beths.
