I'm from Queens,NYC which is a queer thing to say but with all the locals here I just wanted to say that I think these guys are hell, pure and total. Total Macks looking for a falling leaf to spit on. I wish I was exposed to this much earlier. As an adult it's like do I cut work tomorrow and try and hold down the nearest bodega?
Never heard about (Oscar Wilde), don't want know about (and Brendan Behan), don't think about (Shaun O'Casey), don't care about (George Bernard Shaw), oh (Samuel Beckett), won't talk about (Gene O'Neil), won't know about (Edna O'Brian), won't think about (Laurence Sterne)

so true mimkyodar,a lazy slomotion version of a powerful tune.kevin's an irish poet to compete with yeats.don't stand me down is the best album ever made.
A great song from a great band, though I admit to preferring the earlier stuff with the horns to the later records with more strings (I play the saxophone myself, which must have something to do with it).
This song was written as an answer to the anti - Irish feeling that was protrayed by some parts of the British media. Rowland quotes the names of several noted Irish authors to counteract the myth that Irish people were thick. Rowland was actually born in Ireland before his family emigrated to Coventry when he was a small child. A classic song!
WRONG-WRONG-WRONG!!!!! Kevin Rowland was born in Subby Lane,Wednesfield,Wolverhampton. His family moved to Ireland when he was young, then Scotland and later the London area. They moved to Birmingham in his teens.Hes a dedicated Wolves fan-he was even a Hooligan in the 70s!-he has written several songs about his love of Wolves, the latest being MY LIFE IN ENGLAND.Check Wiki.
Mate you dont know what your on about,Rowland was born in Stuby Lane,Wednesfield,Wolverhampton. His family emigrated to Ireland when he was young, then Scotland and then ended up in London when he was 9 where he got into lots of fights because of his Midlands accent. They then moved back to the Midlands-Birmingham,he has NO ascociation with Coventry at all.Check Wiki-get your facts right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember watching this for the first time on TOTP 30 years ago. I think Kevin Archer broke a string on his guitar during this performance. One of my all time favorite Dexy's songs, especially this version of their debut single. Great posting.
we used to giggle at this big bloke carrying a trombone case around at Banff Academy in the early 70'......Big Jim Paterson of Dexy's no less....fools that we were...much much respect Big Jim
@Trude1974 I love Big Jim! He's awesome, I love how Kev mentions him in a few of his songs as well, especially when he talks about how Big Jim has respect, how he plays the trombone and he feels it, he really feels it within, and then you hear Jimmy's (scouser?) accent saying "I've got respect... I've got respect... I've got respect!"

Great ska influenced tune. Nice memories of an uncensored live version WBCN in Boston used to play in the early 80's.

This is a great song. Brings back memories. Should have been a hit. Classic tune. Bring back the 80s. Puts today's depressing pop drivel to shame
bingoace 1 year ago 3
This should have been a much bigger hit than it actually was, it only reached No. 40 in the UK charts. IMHO it was a stronger song than Geno
