That said, yes indeed, the UK and USA overthrew a democratically elected government in '53 when the Prime Minister nationalised it's oil industry. They didn't instate anyone though - they just encouraged the standing Shah to rule more fiercely.

Before 1979 Iran was much more secular and friendlier to the U.S.. It was lead by the Shah who the U.S. supported (which had its own issues). But in January of 1979 the Shah was overthrown and the Ayatollah was leader (which they still are). This is a MUCH more fundamentalist Islamic rule who don't take too kindly to the U.S. (the hostage crisis). I don't think anyone should have nuclear weapons least of all Iran. I think it's naive to think Iran wouldn't create nuclear weapons.
