The Space Pirates:

can use cloaking devices, plan ambushes on you, use mulitple weapon systems (wave, plasma, ice, & power beams), know how to operate machinery, apparently know how to rebuild a dieing Ridley (to Mecha Ridley & Omega Ridley), and they are generally an effective and inteligent species.

Ridley:

a big lizard with wings that shoots fireballs and mindlessly slices you with it's claws and teeth like a wild animal.

I think canon is something like the Space Pirates as a race are actually very ineffectual without a fear-culture dictator in charge but I like my version better.
