Dave's book is worth the read for any VH fan. Sammy is awesome as well. I like both incarnations. To bad they can't work together double the music at half the price. I'd like to see it happen.
Balance was what turned me off to VH after being a fan for so many years. It sounded like they were just going through the motions. I saw them on that tour for the 5th or 6th time, and found it to be the weakest they ever sounded. Didn't get to see Roth with the band (too young), but these videos blow away the Sammy era shows I saw...
Hi Dave! Want a really good pic of catwoman? Go to Lee Kennedy on Facebook.com and you'll see the only photo of me I will allow anyone to see as I too have a few things I hate about the age thing...♥♥♥ wizzzeeee iz catwoman who iz crazy too!!
Dave actually sang live and did all kinds of crazy martial arts moves at the same time. Eddie played guitar and keyboards masterfully well. The band was fun, humorous and energetic. Gotta love Van Halen, musical medication.
I give credit where it's due. Sammy had some big shoes to fill and had massive success. He's a real nice guy and makes a great tequila. I am a DLR girl but Sammy deserves credit. The reason I prefer Dave besides the fact that he's one of my fave frontmen of all time is because there was a youthful rebellion to the Dave music that was kind of lost on the second incarnation of the band.
Sammy blows. Van Hagar was a joke. Dave was/is the king. Sure they sold records, but is was mostly pop radio crap. They can't hold a candle to the real thing. These muther fuckers were truly bad ass!
@Abadox8 Excuse my ignorance. Secrets never made the top 40, but that crap song did. Think? OK. I think you have no taste in music. I think you like generic shit. I think you have no taste. Go see Sammy, but stay away from Van Halen shows, cause thay aint gonna play that garbage ever again. IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
relax buddy again you miss the obvious sarcasm. VH's coolest album in my opinion is Fair Warning.
I have the whole dave era catalogue, but "Balance" (1995), which is with sammy of course, is a really interesting album. Listen to it. if you cant get past your hatred for mr hagar, then you are the idiot that has no taste in music. Eddie was at the peak of his playing on that album. Give it a listen.
@Abadox88 Personally, I find Balance to be VH's weakest effort. There weren't any particulary stand out songs, and I'm not a fan of the way the alnum was mixed. To loud, compressed, and is very far away from the "live sound" Van Halen started with. Humans Being, released after Balance, is an excellent song, and was really Hagar's last horah. Van Halen 3 was like a different band.
i agree, there were no stand out songs, and the mixing was just a sign of the times unfortunately, the 90s started compressing sounds to shit, im sure the record company wanted to "keep current" with production styles. But you dont find eddie to have a really cool style on that album? i mean.. i think that was his final peak in playing, style wise, since the '84 album. Live, he also had a kick ass solo during that tour!!
Darth, you're a simpleton. Van Hager had more sales, so what. Amerian Idol gets more viewers a week than 60minutes, Roth runs rings around Hagar in every manner possible. Sammy's a nice guy but he's a light weight. Dave is one of a kind. Period
i just completed my david lee roth days van halen colletcion with ths album, and i gotta say all 6 albums are fucking amazing... it really doesnt get much better than this lineup

It is no wonder they broke up, from a stage stand point, dave could not remember the words to the songs. He also is a great studio singer. His style is Frank Sinatra on steriods. But he sucks on stage, he loses the pitch very often. Basically a show boat.
he needs the 12-string to play the main part of 'secrets' and it doesn't sound right to tap on a 12-string (i.e. the solo), so the 6-string below can have him do both instead of switching guitars mid-song or having another guitarist.
VH should definatly remaster this footage and release it to the fans, along with Oakland 81, and us festival. I think we hardcore fans deserve a good Roth era DVD collection am I right?
I was 11 when this came out. Diver Down was the first record I ever bought. I hope my 5 month old son (my first) has a band like Van Halen to love when he is 12.
I was around 11ish too when this album was released.Hope when my son is born next week he will appreciate all great artists. They are far and between now.
I like both eras but yeah Roth era was the True "Van Halen" Sammy fit in well I thought .. just not the original! This song is one of those unsung Gems! Nice chord progression .. Eddie's songwriting skills are really the top reason they were always successful cause it gave him a platform for riffs/melodies that then turned into the legendary solos we all know him for!
Yeah, many other artists put their energy into making singles, while filling the rest of their albums with junk. Van Halen filled their albums with quality from start to finish. Even thier cover songs were better than the originals. I think Eddie said "Secrets" was one of his favorites.

i just heard an old recording of ed and some telephone interview with a writer from giutar world or something. ed sounded very proud of his work on writing this song. ck out the 9 part- phone conversation at 5150EVH5150.
David Lee Roth is known for many things, some good, some bad. But one thing that he had a unique monopoly on was a SUPREME rock falsecetto. I dont ever hear people talk about the fact that its gone. He lost around 1988. Why I dont know. If drug and alcohol did it than it would have gone away much sooner. People now say dave doest have the range he used to but on the contrary his natural voice is just as good he just cant rely on his falcetto.
I noticed it too! Even 'Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love' from this concert is five billion times better, and that's saying something since Ed's guitar is a little out of tune. Not knocking him for it by any means, it's just one of those things that can happen in live performances.
Diver down tour... one of the best show's that they had pro shot... I really hope 'someone' gets over things and they release a real version of this Largo show...
Dave's book is worth the read for any VH fan. Sammy is awesome as well. I like both incarnations. To bad they can't work together double the music at half the price. I'd like to see it happen.

Agreed - an underrated gem from the Roth-era.
EVH was always far more than a shredder and a tapper and this really shows it. Great melody.

Diver down tour... one of the best show's that they had pro shot... I really hope 'someone' gets over things and they release a real version of this Largo show...
