Wow, I thought I was listening to a review of the second Sherlock Holmes movie. I didn't realize it was a review of the first one until the last minute. They're really similar.
I like the fact that Mark Kermode did seem to be genuinely pleased to have derived pleasure from a Guy Ritchie film! Could the infamous sea have parted? Personally I can see where Mark is coming from on some points. I liked Lock Stock and Snatch and thought they were interestingly done and amusing. Sure, its all geezers and guns, but I first watched it as almost a caricature of that world, and it was funny, it was only when I realised Ritchie was serious about it that I began to worry.
I'm so glad he liked it cos I thought "I liked this movie, but Mark is gonna hate it, and then I feel annoyed the next time I watch it". But low and behold, he likes it, too!
Oh man I thought this movie was a stinker! Love Da Holmes literature, agree Holmes and Watson's chemistry was great, and the comedy was well played but the storyline was fucking turd. Oh well...
I actually loved this film, it looked convincing and the acting was spot on. Id also liek to say that fight scenes always bore me, but not in this case, the fights were amazing to watch
I don't think the relationship between Holmes and Watson was that great. I think it's mainly about Holmes. And the interesting way that Downey plays him. I was surprised that Downey did not play him with his usual ticks and winking at the camera. He was very un-Tony Stark, yet fascinating and watchable nonetheless.
@skinwalkerxxx True, but to me, Downey is only ever as good as his straight men/women. He needs solid actors to be his anchor while he goes crazy (i.e. Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gwyneth in Iron Man, Jude Law in this.)
@TulseLuper Perhaps. But I just don't think Judd Law was that good or his part was that well written. I was surprised how invisible he was in fact. I've seen actors will less to play with and they came off better, more sparks, at least. I would have loved seeing Seymoore Hoffman in that role.
From that clip it sounds pretty terrific actually.
I think Holmes fans have a problem with seeing any other interpretation of Holmes than they're used to. Which is weird because he's always done wrong, he's not stuffy and sophisticated, he's a slob and he's rude.
Also the books are very adventurous, they're always running after people. We never see them fight mainly because they carry a gun with them. And there are occasional physical brawls.
Well it's like with James Bond; nobody wanted to see a grittier version after the Pierce Brosnan era, but it took Daniel Craig and Casino Royale to prove them wrong.
What I like about the clip is their timing. Most comedies nowadays are totally lacking in this department. The snappiness of their relationship is on display beautifully there; you really get a sense of interplay. Maybe because Law and Downey really know what they're doing unlike the geezers Ritchie normally works with.
I'd pay to watch a film about the geezerish antics of Jimmy the Snout

Who is the other guy with Mark? I wish he'd just stay quiet. His constant interruptions are infuriating.

Is the Kermode/Mayo show coming to an end?
badhead 2 years ago
No it's still going. Mayo is leaving his usual daytime slot for Radio 1 but he's still coming back to 5 Live every Friday at 3 with Kermode.

radio1? he's on 1?

No he's moving to Radio 1 for the Breakfast show.

Rubbish, there's no way 1 would rid themselves of that fat, mouthy, twat they have!

Yeah, I admit I enjoy Lock Stock and Snatch, but I haven't liked anything since then. But if Kermode likes it then it couldn't be that bad.
