I like the fact Edith knew that Archie did not want to show his tender side so when he broke down a bit she gave him his time so she waited until he was done. Very Beautiful
Wow... I grew up on this show in the '70s, and I don't really remember this scene. I just wept... hard. What a beautiful TV moment. Thanks for posting. PS: Please stop ragging on Sally Struthers' weight gain. It's just mean, and definitely not in keeping with her compassionate spirit. People have problems... what a shock.
She was a dutiful and loving wife who knew what her man needed and accepted him for he was, flaws and strengths alike. A true, strong woman. Something most of the 20-something whores out there these days wouldn't know the first thing about.
great show, powerful characters, not afraid to deal with social issues at all, and most of all hilarious through and through. this show was for everyone who wanted to laugh and have a great time.
i laugh just as hard now as i did then growing up with the show. sure i saw the re-runs but that didnt mean i couldnt enjoy the show. as millions of others do now
Archie always reminded me of my own father. My dad could be very gruff at times but his heart was always in the right place-he just didn't know how to show it. My sister has been estranged from our parents for the last two years-I know my folks both made mistakes but they did the best they could. Last week my 80 yr old father was in hospital for surgery and having to tell him that his daughter wouldn't even call him, much less visit, was one of the most painful things I've ever had to do.
hi friend i am 35, and i got teary eyed and then cried the last 2 minutes.if i may speak for the both of us, we are damn lucky and privilaged to have gorwn up with such shows like all in the family.at least i feel that way. IMO,tv today has seriously gone down in quality.it is all about making money fast, yes i sound like an elitest but i know i am not the only one that feels that way. yes there have been great shows too but not enough room to mention them here. take care friend
I'd say AITF started jumping the shark after this, then it got higher over the shark when Edith died and the series' name was changed (RED FLAG) to A.B.P., and when Martin Balsam left the show, it practically touched the sky and landed safely on the other side of the shark. At least they FINALLY pulled it shortly afterwards!
Oh this makes me cry. I can relate to how it felt. When I was a kid we moved from Wisconsin to Virginia. Grandparents, aunts uncles and cousins were still in Wisconsin.
the last few weeks I felt like shit because it the show was coming to the end. now on tv land they are back to care free bunkers. why did they do this to great shows. even roseanne. I watch all in the family for the laughs but fell in love with the family.
An extraordinary scene that pretty much is the conclusion of the great All in the Family run. Forget later seasons of the show and Archie Bunker's Place, this is the end. The kids have left home and all of the tension leaves when Archie and Mike part. Once the joking stops about 5 minutes or so b4 the end of the scene, just watch Carroll O'Connor brilliantly keep the stiff upper lip until the very end where he almost breaks, but not quite. Television has never been better.
Damn, I'm a sucker for departure scenes. Whether it's All in the Family, Boy Meets World, Friends, or even Toy Story 3, I just can't handle them well. :(
Hell, I hadn't even SEEN any All in the Family episodes until I watched a bunch of clips on YouTube tonight, and this scene STILL made me intensely sad. *sigh*
@PsychLion with all respect, that show was well cast, but nothing like this. Estelle Geddy's chair isn't in the Smithsonian, and the "Golden Girls" didn't create immediately recognizable phrases such as "dingbat", "meathead", or "stifle it!"
words can't express the sadness....amazing acting....i watched the show but never saw this episode....the thing the writers got right was that the great tension and emotion was between meathead and archie.....so glad they didn't go for a cheap laugh to lighten it up....
This is the reason this show is one of the greatest comedies of all time. It could have you laughing one moment then tear your heart out the next. Very few comedies can do that. All in the family and Soap were 2 of the best at doing that. Just fantastic acting
This episode was so unexpected because of the superb acting, almost genuine emotion between these 4 epic characters; it just seemed so real & still does.
The show wasn't the same after this episode, not to me anyway, which made it like the end of an era...It wasn't as funny w/out Michael driving Archie batty, and the tender relationship with Archie & his only "little girl gone" "Archie Bunker's Place" was OK, but a different show, w/ the character's natures transformed a bit too much.
It would have been a nice touch at the end, if Archie reached out his hand across the table and held Edith's hand to console her as they were sitting there together.
@ZamfirChannel I agree. What you describe, however, was used in a previous ALL IN THE FAMILY episode. In that episode, Archie and Edith have an argument before two house guests arrive, another married couple. Then they find out that this couple, whom they thought had it made, are getting a divorce. At the end of the episode, with Archie and Edith in their respective chairs, Archie reaches over and takes Edith's hand. She takes his hand with both of her hands. Great final shot!
These nine minutes show why these four actors make up the greatest casting in sitcom history. The chemistry is almost unbelievable. Whoever put these four wonderful actors together deserves a freaking medal.
That moment when Archie gets choked up, Edith comes out of the kitchen and sees it, then goes back into the kitchen to give him a moment to regain him composure...man...that just tears me up every time I see it.
The very end of this scene was captured very well by Norman Lear. That last moment really summed up lonliness for Archie and Edith. It was very emotional
I am a huge all in the family fan. I truly think that Carrol Oconnor was genuinely moved in this episode. He came off as a tough guy but really was attached to rob reiner both as a son-in-law on the show and as an actor... i get emotional when i watch this. GREAT SHOW!!!
ahhh, i bawled i have to admit. I agree that his chemistry with sally struthers is undeniable, they were a great father-daughter match. but i must say the toughest to watch is Archie after Edith's death...that's almost unbearable..:(
Extremely powerful episode!!..my all time favorite....agree with all of you...you have no soul if this didn't grip you in some fashion given mike's & archie's history in the show's series in addition to identifying with the scene as well as superb acting all around....masterpiece episode & great post! (yes, I got tearful)
More than 30 years later and it still makes me cry. What a series climax...television at its best. I think they all knew that they were actually ending the show. For all of his faults, Archie Bunker's redeeming quality was that he really loved his family. Everyone who watched this show over the years felt an emptiness in their homes at the end of this episode.
I agree, accept that I would say that the point of Archie was not that for a hard guy he loved just his family, but that for a man who was so rough on the edges, deep inside there was love - period - just love at his core :) at least that is what I take from O'Conners portrayal of Archie. Archie wanted to love, but he was afraid to show it for fear of being vulnerable. Again, just my two cents. I cry every time I see this.
Archie and Gloria scenes together when it was tender always bring tears to my eyes. The bond between Carroll O'Connor and Sally Struthers were true and genuine like father and daughter.
Why did Mike and Gloria have to move clear across the country? Couldn't they have been written out of the show with a move to Jersey or the Bronx. That way, they could have been out of site but close enough for Edith to have visited them and Joey.
I have seen interviews with Rob Reiner, saying that he didn't have to act and that the emotion of the scene and the fact that they were leaving the show, made the scene work so well.
In his TV archive interview, Rob Reiner said that one of the most important things Carroll O' Connor taught him, as an actor (and a writer) was the ability to take what was given in the script, and to make the most of it. This particular episode is a great example of that. O'Connor did more and better things with silence (body expressions, facial reactions, pauses) than a whole bunch of his predecessors or contemporaries. And when he spoke, his words meant more because of that.
American drama of the highest order, right up there with Arthur Miller. It hits all the right notes and with subtle shading along with the strong emotion. This scene culminates something like 8 years of these characters and their behaviors brilliantly--especially the character of Archie, who now, left alone with his own existence, is facing a very different world, and 8 years later, a very different America as well. This level of drama is all but extinct on network TV today...
Geezes this always makes me cry like crazy and walliepeanuts you are so right, that last part probably makes me cry the hardest. Incredible acting. I love this show so much.
