Grermans really now how to build a submarine..by the way..this movie is a true story about one german submarine on Atlantic.The captain was still alive when movie was made in 1981..Wolfgang Petersen said that in his interview.Submarine sailors were the bravest people of ww2..movie is a classic..

@finfred Yes I know. We use to do it on our diesel locomotives if they have been sitting for a while. GM-EMD engines... :-)

My favorite scene from this movie(the first half atleast), alongside with the one at Gibraltar, in which the IWO exclaims "Oho!" as the boat is sinking below the 210m mark...
Für mich gibt's nichts schöneres als ein U-Boot.... und Segelschiffe... - one of the greatest movie lines ever! Especially consodering the real conditions(squalor, stench etc...) they had to live(and die)in on a U-Boat! These guys really had to have a passion for this stuff!

It's indicator valves. They open them to make sure that the engine's runing on all cylinders. On large engines, you can't hear the difference if one cylinder is not fireing. They'r also using the valves to measure compression, and take cylinder diagrams
