Don't listen to the critics that have commented...I think that this is a wonderful approach for a second photographer to take! The results are unique and eye-catching. These photos in conjunction with the "standard" wedding photos would make a wonderful photo package! Nice work!
It's an interesting experiment. I'm not entirely sure why people are weeping bucket loads about it. And traditional wedding photographs are overrated anyway.
@UrfaTheGreat Thank you, thats EXACTLY what it was...an experiment. Nobody was out anything, this wasn't the only images they got, i didnt get paid for it, I did it as a second shooter out of the way of the primary. No harm, no foul.
Hmmmm, it's a cool gimmick but I don't think many wedding photographers will care for the look. Not to mention they probably won't get hired again if they did.
I think your composition is fine for most of your work; however, I think this style of photography isn't as appropriate for wedding photography---The depth of field in your pictures were mostly the same and I felt like it kind of obstructed the actual beauty in the picture. I understand that you wanted to experiment with the lensbaby...but I think you would have been better off taking these same pictures with real lens,
@jyw003 I would not have been better off because than that would have accomplished nothing. We shoot weddings with regular lenses all the time. Doing something outside the box will only improve your normal work. This could have been a 24mm set on f/1.2 and had super short depth of field. The point was that you need to try things that are unconventional and don't be afraid to try. I knew some people wouldn't like it, but the goal was to experiment not to please everyone.
@kerrycgarrison I totally agree with you on trying new things and not being afraid; however, a wedding only happens once---what if you were the primary photographer and you only used a lensbaby?
@jyw003 Why would someone do that? Or shoot one with an iPhone, or a 400mm lens? You use the right tools for the situation. That's only reason I was able to do this project is because there WAS a regular photographer shooting the event.
@kerrycgarrison :) with this vid, we now know not to use lensbaby for wedding~ maybe put it on a secondary cam for some unique shots :) good experiment :)
Hey, sorry to get you all hot and bothered. If the title of your video is "Entire Wedding Shot with a Lensbaby Composer," and you pour all the images into a slideshow, music and all, that looks quite a bit like a slideshow a wedding photographer might put together, perhaps you shouldn't be surprised when someone assumes this was, in fact, a wedding shot with a Lensbaby alone. Sorry to get you britches in a bunch.
This isn't a matter of "getting it" or not. This is poor work with a poor choice of equipment. Sorry, but it's just the truth. Bad framing of shots, bad selection of moments, poor angles, and more than anything, a lousy lens that is a bad one-trick pony at best. Next time, rent a real pro tilt-shift and keep it on another rented body while you shoot most of the wedding with a standard zoom or a wide prime on your main body.
@joeink37 So you didn't "get it". I was NOT the primary photographer at the wedding so I had to avoid getting in his way. The POINT was to see what I could get with the lens. It just as easily could have been an entire wedding shot with a 400mm lens, or an entire wedding shot with a pinhole camera. It was just an experiment and was not the primary images for the wedding.
I agree with all the cooperative and formulaic thinkers that are commenting about the lack of a "proper lens." Kerry, you should have known better than trying to be creative or innovate. Photography isn't really a field that's meant for that sort of thing
awful... you obviously have no idea what a shift tilt lens is intended for.... you got like 10 good pictures ... I really hope someone else took the GOOD wedding pictures
@kerrycgarrison The Lensbaby Composer IS a tilt-shift lens you can tell this by the fact its listed as a tilt-shit lens and also by the Way it TILTS AND SHIFTS!!!
But as for your project you did good I love the lensbaby's and how you can mess around with the sweet spot on the Composer and get just right also the Creative Aperture Kit's and blanks mean there is so much you can do with this lens right out the box. you have some really cool Pic's shame some miss the Point!
Amazing images. I'm planning to get the lens baby and this video tilted the scale into buying one. Emphazing the main subjects has a very dramatic effect and makes the pictures stand out.
Amazing work! The photos are stunning. I love the effect. It really helps to focus right in to the heart of the subject for each photo. I can see where some people would not like it, but I think you hit an out of the park grand slam home run with this one!
@kerrycgarrison Sorry. You're right. I didnt even read the description, before, missed the point. I love the lens baby also, and now that i see its something you wanted to do for a while, it is a great idea, and you did take some great shots. keep up the good work. next time ill read the full description.
WONDERFUL work there! there are alot of shots that came out fantastic in every way possible! though i dont think the Lensbaby should be used for an entire wedding due to alot of people being blurred around the edges of alot of the photos the ones that came out great truly came out great! alot of people now a days tend to say "but you can do that in photoshop!" but idc who you are,you cant tell me that a Photoshopped effect looks the same as an in camera one. great job man!
Really nice work, well done !! photography is all about break the rules and let the creativity come out of the lenses, not only have a really sharp photo. thank you for share with us
Yeah some "photographers" spend all their time in front of a computer screen with photoshop ~ perhaps they forget photography is about getting out there with the camera?
@TheWairarapaWildcat Thank you, I have said numerous times, I would rather do something in-camera than "photoshop it". If someone wants to be a photo retoucher than that is entirely up to them, but I don't care to spend my time adding effects later.
i like the shots but couldn't watch it all the way through.. the pics hurt my eyes. my eyes are very sensitive to light. i'm not sure if i could take pics like these ;(
@davidgzmn12345 Well thanks for explaining how wrong everyone is and how absolutely correct you are since there is obviously only one way to do things and its your way. You expertise and wisdom was proven beyond any shadow of a doubt when you said there is such a thing as a black & white lens.
No, it was metaphor. I would have said black and white film, but there actually were reasons to use B&W film.
But since you obviously think youre right, then tell me.
Whats the benefit of using the lens baby instead of just opening photoshop and applying the radial blur?
for the price of a lensbaby you could purchase a legal copy of photoshop elements, and believe me, you can do alot more things with photoshop than with this lens.
@davidgzmn12345 No, I didn't say I am right and you are wrong. I simply think people should be able to do things however they choose. If you choose to "photoshop it" thats fine with you.. That doesnt make me wrong or right, its a personal preference. it is actually almost impossible to fully recreate the Lensbaby effect without using a 3rd party plugin like Bokeh or Focal Point. If we take your stance, then we should shoot everything at f/22 and add DoF in post production..
Its cool to be able to do this with your camera alone, instead of photoshop. Im just saying thats, i believe, its way too expensive for just being able to do 1 thing.
Imagine yourself buying a 250 dlls lens with just 1 aperture setting, or just one focus setting?. Yeah, it may be good at what it does, but its still fairly limited and wouldnt be a very good thing, now would it?
@davidgzmn12345 Like a Tilt-Shift Lens which does unique things (and are quite expensive) or Prime lenses that have only one focal length. I love my lensbaby lenses and what I get with them. If its too expensive for YOU, then that's fine. The price is worth it to me and I have had four different ones. Its an effect that works great for some of the work that I do and clients love it.
@davidgzmn12345 What do you mean "1 aperture setting and one focus setting"? You've been misinformed as the lensbaby comes with about 8 aperture disk and the same focus settings as any prime lens.
I love the creativity in using the lensbaby for a wedding. It's not for everyone and I love the dreamy quality it brings the images. The compositions are awesome and the shots are quite unique.

@kerrycgarrison the only difference you get is that, when done with photoshop, you still have the original file and can do other things with it.
The lens baby heavily limits the type of pics you can take. Its akin to buying a bad black & white lens.
The lens baby is a one trick pony (and a one trick pony that performs a bad trick, by the way)
