Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i dont understand how somebody can say birelli has 'no felling', that his playing 'doesn't swing', or criticise him for overplaying. Jazz is all about showmanship after all, as footall is, and to watch a player 'dribble' with such, skill, authority, and so steeped in the history of the bebop idiom, is what it's all about for me. If im not in the mood, i go listen to something more poppy.
OMG, this is the best ever version of donna lee !!!
i have the cd from 1994 and i love the sound of all three , the solos and the great atmosphere. bireli is such an amazing talent and Andrei and Chris just make him sound so good. in my opinion much much interesting than the gypsy project.
totally - Bireli just dribbles about all over the place like a footballer who just wants to beat the next opponent but is incapable of passing the ball, is not a team player and ultimately has little to offer the team. I have really tried to like the guy but at the end of the day he just plays crap. Not only that but his sense ot time is very poor, he may play fast but he does not swing. Jimmy Rosenburg / Fapy Lafertan are by far and away better musicians.
@johnnylance not at all. He's just crap, end of story, he lacks musical talent and gets by, in the same way that many gypsy / Django based people do on flash that blinds musically limited people who cannot hear the depth and power that people such as Django have. Bireli was thrust into the limelight too early, it meant he never developed anything like the musical maturity of McLaughlin. Metheny, Pass and others.
@Boldstrummer Coming from Joe Pass, that is quite a compliment. I do believe that Joe had a better command on arrainging for the guitar, and that translated into amazing Melody-Chord arrangements. I think that Joe had a better idea of Motive, Theme, and Variation on the Theme...If you couldnt tell by now, I am a big fan of Joe...
@highlandbrian McLaughlin and Dimeola are one-dimensional...and mistaken all too often as Jazz Guitarists...they are not. Pass is in a class by himself..he mastered all dimensions of guitar....
@highlandbrian I have seen much of this at YouTube: someone posts a sincere and educated comment about a video and gets spearheaded by a legion of fans who think that everyone has to like dogs, even though dogs bite. I concur with your opinion 100%.
@rmoraespinto haha yea youtubers do that all the time lol.
personally, I find this concert (it came ou on cd) too dribbly at times as well; but check out the album "standards" (same songs, but with NHOP on bass): it swings hard and has awesome solos!
If you think bireli isnt a good team player; look up his stuff with sylvain luc (2 cd's and youtube videos): theyre constantly listening to each other
but end of the day, think what you want of course :)
@highlandbrian lmao, crap, right, Bireli is a horrible guitar play. I mean listen to him, totally doesn't know his instrument, te tune, I mean really, why does he play at all. Thank god for folks like yourself with your hundreds of videos show your awesome skills. No really, thank you, thank you so much. This world is so much better now. I mean, I've been playing guitar for 12 years, I think I'll put it down. You are wise highlandbrian, very wise.
I try to find something of partially right in ur comments,(it has been difficult)
you wrote "Bireli was thrust into the limelight too early"......maybe this is true. This is true for all the young gipsy guitarist
you wrote " many gypsy / Django based people ... limited people who cannot hear the depth and power that people such as Django " ..... also maybe is true.
but that" his sense of time (beat) is very poor."......i'm sorry but hahahaha haahaha
@rooseguitar64 my comment was based on truth, he has sense of time.
This is a fact. His sense of time is comparable to Steve Gadd?...Ok!...they have both sense of time. These are facts. Pat Martino has sense of time like a metronome but not much feeling in my opinion. If you want, read my comment on Pat Martino and John Scofield "Sunny" maybe you will find that we have the same opinion. Bye
@highlandbrian I was sitting there and believe me, apart from that solo part, the concert was excellent, and definitely not flooded with fast scales... His slow playing was absolutely heartfelt and really did swing!

I've been playing for 40 years and have never heard anyone come close to Birili's genius.
He is the Oscar Peterson of the guitar. McLaughlin and Metheny have the highest respect for him. Including Joe Pass who I studied with.
Django's son Babik thought that Birili was as good if not better than his father.
You have no discernment nor respect for your elders.
I suspect your projecting your own CRAP onto Birili.
You must have had some horrible s--t happen to you. . .
