  • alfie boe is just better

  • Come to me 超感人~ 我國中第一次看就哭了...還把他的歌詞背下來... ='(

  • love him

  • Colm = Best Valjean EVER

  • they wrote this role for colm.

    bravo maestro.

  • WOAAA AMAZZINGGGG~!!

  • not easy hitting that high B note in Who Am I

  • Colm is the best in this role. No doubt.

  • this man is dashit, the best valjean ever!!!!!

  • bravoooooooooo!!!!!

  • The other scene in the book that to me demonstrates Victor Hugo's genius is Javert's suicide. I have never read a writer so capable of taking the reader on a psychological journey with a soul in despair. Les Miserables is a great work in character development. The musical inspired me to read the unabridged version of the novel.

  • her voice is beautiful x

  • He is really amazing he captures every word in his face

  • I love his high notes! Can anybody say chills? However, when the note terminates, there's that weird sound.

I'm not saying I could do better. NO ONE could. Colm is Valjean.

  • Anyone who says JOJ is better than Colm is not very knowledgable of true music singing.

I love JOJ, I really do.

When I first got in Les Mis, I thought Colm was nothing compared to JOJ like you.

Then I realized, JOJ is way too much of an actor!

Just look at his "bring him home"s

Too much hand movement and power, that's not what that song is about!

He tries too hard to sing with feeling, but with Colm, it just comes naturally.

The way you speak tells us that you are no older than 12 years old.

  • While I agree that Colm is an overall singer than JOJ, and would be better in a concert like this, if you ask any Broadway/West End performer or casting agent, they will always say that you have to be an actor first and a singer second when performing in musical theatre.

In that regard, I think JOJ is an actor who makes brilliant acting choices and has the voice to back it up, while Colm is great just on voice alone. He is not the actor that JOJ is, in my very humble opinion.

  • Really?

Hmm, I believe that JOJ has a better voice, and Colm is the better actor.

He seems to really become Jean Valjean and knows the character of Valjean.

Either way, they are probably the greatest that Broadway will ever see!

(And Michael Crawford in Phantom of the Opera)

    XD

  • That's Colm Wilkinson's signature Yelp at the end of high long notes :) lol Hes amazing :)

  • *sniff* *sniff* I did this in high school back in 2003, and man, almost half the numbers in this show make my eyes water, and the other half give my goosebumps goosebumps. one more thing: Colm = Valjean. End of story, just like Phillip Quast = Javert. Period.

  • joj is val jean, he has the whole package and is way better in the west end

colm is good but not great like joj

  • Shut up already!

You know NOTHING about the performing arts at all!

  • Colm is awsome! Way better than John Owen-Jones.

I love the passionate facial expressions, and the way he pronounces his vowels are incredible. Especially at 1:02-1:11 when he says damned, that specific part just evokes an emotion in me that I can describe.

  • you gotta feel a little bit bad for the girl who played fantine cause look how much of a fucking incredible performance she had to follow!

  • Well, Ruthie did a damn good job too :D

    lol

  • I know that it has probably been said a million times before, but Colm Wilkinson IS Jean Valjean and will always be known as the best there ever was to portray his character. And although "One day More" is my favorite Les Miserable song. Who am I is a VERY close second for me. When he confesses to Javair that he is Jean Valjean and proclaims his prison number 24601, you can hear his passion and truly can be sucked into the moment and believe that Colm Wilkinson really is Jean Valjean!!!!!!!!!

  • In Victor Hugo's novel, the chapter in which Valjean confesses is fantastic. It is literature rarely surpassed. As much as I love the play, it inspired me to read the novel. When I saw the play a second time, I knew more of the details of the story, one of the great stories of the last two centuries.

  • Agreed.

  • Bravo!!

  • He is the absolute best! One note and I can recognize his voice in my sleep! Only got to see him once, but it was life changing! He is the sole reason that I got into Broadway, and no one has yet surpassed him, in my opinion! Where he screams out "24601!" was the highlight of my young adult life! Still gives me chills to this day :)

  • WHO AM I?

    24601!

This is the most epic Musical in history.

  • His Voice is Amazing.

  • his vowels are sooooo unusual lol wheres he from?

  • I believe he is Irish ;)

  • colm looks exactly like his character should

  • COLM WILKINSON IS A GOD! if you agree click THUMBS UP!!!

  • wat is this fine actors name???? i simply MUST know!!!

  • His name is Colm Wilkinson and I was thrilled to have seen him play the part of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables in London.

  • the actors name is colm wilkinson

  • I LOVE COLM!

  • Does anyone else hear him sqeek at the end as he cuts off Who am I?

  • Yeah, its intentional though

  • What is he trying to do by sqeeking? I don't see why anyone would do that, since it sounds like a mistake. I think his voice was just a little tired and he strained a little on the B. I mean it is not a note in the chord so what would be the purpose of that sqeek?

  • It's not a note at all, thats the point. He's just showing off, adding a bit of flavour...adding his own bits and pieces. His voice is fine, as he holds that B alot longer than most other performers. It's just to end the syllable in one, 'nuh'.

  • I don't like it, but that's just me.

  • Just heard it on the soundtrack, so yeah, now I see that he did it on purpose.

  • Its his signature yelp he does at the end of most of his long notes. I actually like it.

  • I agree with JJ, but it's an oppinion thing. It probably works on some songs, but I didn't like it with this one.

  • My take on this is issue is that they both have amazing ranges and powerful voices. Colm can sing with more power than most singers out there, but his softs sound really weak. The one who makes it seem easy and realistic, as if he is singing it for the first time, is the best ValJean.

  • When Ruthie sings "when I waaaaaakkkkeeee" and becomes quiet WITHOUT backing away from the microphone...

    I get chills. Spectacular

  • I think they turned off her microphone to be honest. But still, she made me tear up the first time I watched this.

  • Hmph. Way to ruin it for me!

    haha kidding.

    I tear up too :']

  • dude, it a dream cast

  • They didn't turn off her microphone its just a talent that singers can develop over practice, since hearing ruthies version all i do in my singing lessons is practice that !

  • Not to be rude, but who the heck is JOJ?

  • John Owen Jones, the other singer who Played Valjean

  • In my humble opinion, Colm Wilkinson is the better singer. His voice, in addition to a vast and secure range, a great depth, maturity and richness. He posseses a tremendous pallete of dynamic expression, and, unlike JOJ, really understands the role (having played it for so long). This song shows him at his best.

  • you say everything I can say about this man..... please people be welcome to see my version of empty chairs at empty tables and leave your opinion. THX :)

  • I couldn't agree with you more, tamino. The amount of expression he puts in to his singing... gives me the tingles!

  • He is my favorite.

Did you know he played Judas in the early London productions of Jesus Christ Superstar?

I'm sure he was fantastic in that!

  • Anyone who says this "JOJ" guy is better than Colm must have hearing problems. I've watched a few videos of JOJ singing Les Mis songs, and, granted he has a good voice, but it's utterly incomparable to Colm's. The last note he held for much longer and more powerfully that JOJ did in his respective videos. Colm is the original and the best. They wouldn't have cast him in the Original Londong AND Broadway productions if he wasn't.

  • I have no hearing problem - I'm a professional singer (a tenor) and I prefer JOJ. Wilkinson is great, but Jones is a better actor IMHO, and it's not all about the top note, it's about the whole performance. Slight nod to JOJ overall. There are other reasons for hiring actors than straight ability-box office is king.

  • I just feel as though the singer who can hit and sustain the hardest note in the song is the better singer. And why wouldn't people hire the best actors with the greatest abilities? I'm pretty sure that is the overriding reason for hiring actors...

  • Again - it's not just the top note that counts, even if Colm has a better B. And as to hiring the best - explain why Keanu Reeves keeps getting work. He's one of the worst actors I've ever seen. If he doesn't talk, he's OK, but otherwise...

  • I disagree. If one singer cannot hit and sustain a high note and another singer can, the latter is the better singer. There's no real debate there. I feel like Keanu Reeves was near perfect for his role in The Matrix Trilogy...and don't forget Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Movie acting is completely arbitrary anyway. An original Broadway and/or London actor is the best actor for that particular role, otherwise, he would not have been hired.

  • I agree with KiraCat im a professional singer in musical theatre too and it is true bow office overrides everything however i personally think that Colm is the better of the two in this role. but it has nout to do with his final top B its the overall way he is the character rather than just playing it like JOJ sometimes appears to be. the reason they used Colm in both casts is because he is both amazing and his box office success was phenominal!

  • colm is the best

  • JOJ did this soooooooooooooooo much better...he is the true valjean

  • JOJ might be the best Val Jean, but Colm IS Val Jean.

  • Nothing? Both men are superb in the role but from what I've seen, Colm just has that extra 'umph' which lets him pull ahead.

  • Just listening to these beautiful voices gives me goosebumps!

  • I recently saw Les Miz and i was blown away. The last note of who am i just makes me shiver. Truly incredible!

  • You can get the whole video of this tenth ann. performance; or DVD. It is wonderful.

  • i love his lips so dont gip them!

  • OMG...I've got goosebumps!

  • they're so talented

  • lol, very true! I love to listen to his voice but I can't watch him because of how he sings.

  • when comments like this are all people have to say about a performance like that... it makes me a little less proud to be a civilized person.

this performance is incredibly moving! Ruthie Henshall gives me goosebumps

  • that last note is bloody great. go colm

  • where is the song before this?

  • ruthie henshall is amazing

  • Why has'nt anyone posted the Les Mis scene that has the Bishop, candelsticks, and police? That is the scene that supports the whole story line. That simple act of charity turns Valjean's life around for the better!

Is it an anti-catholic thing? People want to forget the part of the play that has a GOOD portrayel of a catholic clergyman?

BTW- if anyone does know of a video of it will u please let me know. Prof. theatre only- no hs musicals. Thanks-

  • If you're talking about the 10th anniversary version, it's on here. I watched it, so yeah, I know lol

  • xx- Yeah I found it and posted it to my faves. Someone at another video told me how to track it down. It is hard to find because it is under the technical name that name does NOT include "bishop" in the title.

    Thanks-

    GBM

  • Can you give a link? I've been looking for that for ages :P

  • such an amazing voice. what is this mans name?

  • Colm Wilkinson I think. He's really awsome

  • That "one" is like the greatest note I've ever heard. I a creepy amount of pleasure out of listening to it.

  • zthat was a cool note wasnt it i like rewinded 10 times

  • Who am I? ftw

  • I'm too fond of him as The Phantom but as Valjean... wow. I love his 24601. When he does that crack he almost looks surprised. :) Colm is amazing.

  • grawr i cant type! i mean i am *not* too fond of him as the phantom

  • no one else will ever be valjean.. he made the part this own.. beautiful voice

  • I CAN SEE IT NOW!!!

i couldn't NEVER see it before, it wouldn't load right or something, wow, i'm super happy!

  • i can't watch any other les mis clips other than this concert edition coz it is bloody awesome

  • he is valjean to me. nobody's better, nobody.

  • I just LOVE les miserables! saw the show in Cape Town at the Nico Malan theatre. AMAZING!!

  • Oh my gosh he is incredible I have the audio of him as the phantom and I didn't like him quite as well in that but he is amazing as jean valjean When he hits thet 20461 I'am blown away every time He gets A 5 star from me

  • anyone else love that small crack at the end of his 24601?

  • that crack was intentional when you lisson closely it adds dramatic clause

  • Yes I do. And I like the way Colm did in other songs, too. What a scream! LOL

  • lol yea, i had to repeat it to make sure it was there :X

  • that 24601 was really good.

  • sureisn't Colm Irish! would you expect any less from him! What a legend!!

  • How in the world would an old redneck like me understand the words without the Chinese subtitles.

  • i love how understated he is. He doesnt need loads of hand gestures or to belt it out at full force all the way through because he has such a strong presence that you hang off every word anyway. Amazing

  • Music is one of my passions, and I listen to all varieties of it. Yet, I've never been as affected by a voice as I am by Colm's. He's truly special.

  • I agree, ednorton. I searched all over the place to find a recording of this cast with Colm in it. While searching I came across the video with Ted Neeley doing Gethsemane. If you haven't heard him you're in for a treat. ntrimm

  • they are both just AMAZING! les miserables is AMAZING! love it! x

  • Nice! Truely awesome!

  • absolutly awesome! colm and ruthie are the best!

  • Amazing! They really did assemble the perfect cast for this Les Miserables production.

  • I can think of a couple people that I would like to have replaced.

  • Regarding the first performance!

  • I can't tell whether that ending note is a C or B...a little help please?

  • It's a B flat.

  • It's a B. Not B flat.

  • picky picky picky, crevoska was half right, bronx43. His piano may just need tuning. he he

  • Chills! I get chills EVERY time!

  • whoa. they don't make em like colm wilkinson anymore.

  • I love "who am I". It is an amazing expression of the character Valjean's integrity and morality. And Colm's voice is nothing short of spectacular. Ruthie is amazing too. There is not one thing about this cast I would alter.

  • Everytime I listen to Colm singing Les Mis it always reminds me of Phantom.

  • I love the little scream at the end when he is saying "onneeeeee..." I still feel this was the best cast EVER!!!

  • Wonderful! None can take that last like like Colm

  • colm wilkinson is the sexiest person in the world. les miserables is immense

  • thanks for posting it

  • i love les mis!!! it's only the best musical in the world!!!
