What pleasure to find unexpected little gems on You Tube (or elsewhere). Agreed, the 'gift wrapping' is probably a mistake. Not just the noise but it creates an awkwardness later when the singer seeks to retreat and is forced to look around. But what a notable surprise when the singer first opens his mouth! You could hardly be more astonished than if a woolly mammoth had popped out! The youthfulness of the singer is perfect - for what can be 'older' than what is faultlessly preserved!
This is a noble interpretation of the famous song. The great Purcell wrote it for a bass voice, and here is an equally noble voice to do it justice. Nobody knows what tempo Purcell had in mind, so, fast or slow, so it doesn't matter as long as the music comes from the heart. Cheers.
I agree with you peteacher. This is truly a "noble" voice. The singer is a natural musician with a fine bass baritone instrument. I love this interpretation of the aria but my problem with it is that I can't understand a word he says. This is the perennial difficulty that all classical singers must face - they are often obliged to perform in languages they do not speak. The natural ability of this amazing young man shines through anyway! Thanks to Cupids77 for posting.
Truly amazing theatrical production. The singer has an incredibly deep, spine-chilling voice and does justice to the very difficult piece. The athletic body helps too (even though it does not quite fit the supposedly old cold genius). Opera theatres everywhere, take note! Definitely 5 stars.
I totally respect your choice, the bass singer is wonderful. I confess that I am partial to Klaus Nomi. And for that particular song, he has a weirdness that suits a "genius" so well.
No no no! It's a song for a bass, not for a countertenor! (yes, it's subjective too...) But the Cold Genius has to be a bass for the duos with the soprano Cupid!
Thank you!

The plastic bag was a mistake and a noisy one but once the singer shed his gift wrapping his voice and torso made up for it.

That's a point of view. My choice goes to the bass singer who reflects better the Opera frozen needs !

yeah,
Not only did Klaus Nomi bring castrato to space opera but his death and purcell's are eerily similar in the nature of their tragedy.

Beautifully sung and a great production. This is so much better with a bass than with a countertenor, and especially with a bass who sings so well.

Wow, great interpretation, the wrap was a bit loud, but I get the gritty sound they were trying to add.

The plastic wrap was way too loud and way too cheesy.

you was not thirst ho told me about "Lestat" I think it is the best modern movee about vimpires,
I tried to find that style absolutly cold, soulles (without soul) and hopeless with much pain.
and what you thing about clip Cold Genius II ?

What power art thou, who from below
Hast made me rise unwillingly and slow
From beds of everlasting snow?
See'st thou not how stiff and wondrous old
Far unfit to bear the bitter cold,
I can scarcely move or draw my breath?
Let me, let me freeze again to death.
