While I like that a Republican is talking reasonably, my understanding is that Voinovich is a politician, like Chuck Hagel, who is always aware of where the closest camera is.

Basically he did nothing but yell at the Ambassador and the General for not pulling the troops out yesterday. One, they don't have that authority, and two, they didn't get us into this in the first place. He has himself and his party's leadership to blame. One wonders if he lectures them in the same manner. I doubt it.

I think there's real frustration and grief in places like Ohio, as demonstrated by Voinovich stating right out that "we're in a recession and God only knows how long we're gonna be in it." I'll take acknowledgment of the cost of the war and the pitiful economic situation any way I can get it.

I thought all his statements were realistic and coherent and that their tenor was to give Crocker and Petraeus the impetus to push for a democratic surge that is cohesive and symmetrical to the military surge. I don't think he could've made those statements with more passion or sincerity. I don't think there's anything wrong with him impressing on everyone his take on things in a tone that appropriately echoes MLK and Obama's view on "the fierce urgency of now."
