  • So this is what Conner Oberst has been doing

  • looks like flin

  • The Social Network - It catches up with you... just saying

  • holy shit dude, theres a ghost playing your piano!!!! is this paranormal 3?

  • plinky plonky

  • jeezuz thats some money in that there room!

  • ...and that's why Trent Reznor is the fucking man!!!!! Keep up the kick ass music!! And if you could, please try to maintain NIN while working with Mariqueen in HTDA.

  • ipad2

  • this is fuckin ridiculous

  • Nice equipment, It's a real fucking shame they discontinued the lemur. Anyhow, this might come off looking stupid but, NINOficcal = trent reznors youtube?

  • <3 disklavier

  • never understad why this thing existed...that sound horrible. and people always uses this high priced "instruments" to feel they have any kind of talent.

  • @Ariel1Dominguez lol /watch?v=Z_zIvFYQWig

  • @Ariel1Dominguez its experimental, if anyone had experimented whit their intruments.....

  • It's like the matrix...

  • nice glimpse of the buchla 200e

  • Isn't that the same device they used to communicate with the mothership in Close Encounters?

  • i wish you posted more videos like this

  • hey it's Alessandro! man i'd love to have all those toys. i bet him and Trent smoke up and play with these things all day haha.

  • @windowlicker1 Trent is sober.

  • its look like the mau5trape here...

  • lol Monomes are really cool.

  • more buff pls

  • Cool,

Can you play tetris with it?

  • Time signature made out of triplets or quintuplet our septuplets (don't know if I'm writing that right, English is not the language I learnt music in) are do not correspond to a different number they are just composite of time signatures with multiples of 2. I guarantee you that in standard western music 30:5 cannot be a time signature, but if you then say that they made a new one up, then it kind of becomes meaningless since we cannot understand without it being explained to us.

  • ahahahah futile.

  • INSANE

  • what a KOOL toy! expensive toy! *eek* looks like a ghost was playing the piano. lol

    hmmm ... 46 dislike. strange.

  • very nice music !!!!

where can i buy the lp ?

  • i believe thats allessandro cortini there

  • @V19torrent i believe you're correct

    this is quite amazing

  • I was about to comment on how amazing that set up is... Then saw it was Trent Reznor's. bastard

  • Trent Reznor is somehow The Highest Grand Master of technology, being the best at using the newest techno-gadgets , like a year before they even come on the market.

GENIUS. OH, and 30:5 , I mean WOW!!!! That is a crazy time signature, Only Trent could pull that off!

  • @fartmagnet 30:5 isn't a time signature, I don't know what it is, but it can't be a time signature since there's no rythmic figure which corresponds to 5.

  • @HannibaltheCanibal Rhythms can be expressed in any way imaginable. Just because it's not common doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The same way there are triplets, there are 5-lets, 7-lets and anything else you can imagine.

  • @aldaraia0official Time signature made out of triplets or quintuplet (don't know if I'm writing that right, English is not the language I learnt music in) are do not correspond to a different number they are just composite of time signatures with multiples of 2. I guarantee you that in standard western music 30:5 cannot be a time signature, but if you then say that they made a new one up, then it kind of becomes meaningless since we cannot understand without it being explained to us.

  • what is that thing?

  • Damn you Trent, you killed everyone innovation-wise.

  • HEY! It's a Trent Reznor lookalike acting like Jhonny Greenwood!!!!

  • Is this Tetris:Reznor Edition?

    =p

  • I just don't understand how the piano's keys can be moving ... With or without all those midi/synth stuffs it seems impossible to me.

  • @ifidolby Funny thing with technology...

  • @ifidolby Have you never seen a Player Piano?

  • putting a monkey on piano will be less expensive...

  • i want one!

  • WAT

  • inventive way to ruin your piano...

  • the piano keys were moving!

  • There's something by Jomox off to the left, too...

  • @RhythmDroid It's a Sunsyn

  • It's a Lemur. They cost like 1-2k I think.

  • what the fuck is it tetris?

  • that thing is so cool

  • how does he control the piano with the monome? i want to do that with the nord is this possible? Alessandro?

  • Moog Piano Bar

  • It's not a Piano Bar, i think it's just a player piano with a midi input, because you can see the keys moving.

  • yes. you can do anything with a monome if you have the right software. there are a lot of free monome apps out there. alternatively, you could also make your own apps with max msp. and your going to need some sort of usb midi inetrface to go to the nord.

  • THAT IS SO FUKN SICK

  • *Gasp* I've got a Lemur too!

    *Gasp*And A Monome!

*Groan*I don't have and Alessandro though.

  • I spot a Lemur, 2 Monomes, a Buchla. a some effects pedals. I want them all.

...But if I could only choose one, I would go for the Buchla 200e for sure. That machine is amazing.

  • @Cuberonix93 Well YEah!

  • that's some impressive kit... it seems like a bit of overkill though. I mean, anybody with opposable thumbs could make the same thing by playing Super Mario Bros. and grabbing a bunch of coins real fast.

  • Love the Buchla 200e synth at 0:28... wishing had one

  • programming a real piano. excellent.

  • cortini is 1 crazy son of a bitch crazy machines

  • Now that's one complicated game of tetris...

  • @churchy99 i lolled so hard at this comment

  • Gahhh I really want funky equipment like that. I'll start with a keyboard first :-j

  • Lemur!!! I want one so bad! it's nice with the KSD activator attached

  • I don't think that is trent

  • alessandro cortini.

  • DU1E3 or DU1A?

Also anybody spot any of the other gear he's using?

  • This is excellent.

  • when I saw you had a Buchla as well I was like "you motherfu***r". In a good way.

  • Thats some cool software.

  • Monome 256 and a lemur fuck you!!! lol

    jk but damn

  • I concur.

  • whaaaat is thiiis?

  • At the end seems like the god damned machine is going crazy !! xD

    LOVE this !

It sounds a lot like what I write myself actually ^^

  • is trent playing the piano but as a ghost? COOL!!!!!!!!

  • lmfao its called midi you pleb

  • it's called a monome you turd

  • WOAH! That is fucking cool!

  • SPOTTED A BUCHLA

  • I would be a kid in a candy store in that room.

  • oh, totally :D

  • Totally <3

  • Same...I wouldn't Even Know What To Do...Except Push Buttons, LOL

  • Agree.... ??????????

  • i heard it from my friends

    about the things you said....

  • so is the monome hooked on to the piano? and what kind of monome is that?

  • Piano Tetris? I want one

  • TENORON!!!! OMFGGG I'm so sickly jealous now!

  • this is a monome 256

  • lots of nice toys!! lots of potential!

  • thats how he writes his song dipshit lol on the new cd the dvd with the vid clips shows it being used in one of the vids its purdddy cool

  • Trent will never make another Downward Spiral. Get over it, stop complaining and hoping for one, and enjoy the rest of his music because it is still fucking good.

As for the monome sounding like shit, yes. Maybe here it does, but that's just because of the sound he put in it; monome's don't have pre-installed sound, they're MIDI controllers.

  • I agree with you Cyber, I hate it when stupid semi-fans all complain about him not putting out something like DS or The Fragile. They were 2 GREAT albums, true, but what do the ppl like TheHeadHunter824 (LOL) want? Do the want Trent to sound the same always and sell himself and the fans short? It's called the evolution of a TRUE artist. I don't understand why HeadHunter doesn't get it being a "Metal song writer" himself, HAHAHA (Sarcasm)

  • Yes I agree.

    We've heard a cry

    we've come to intervene

you will change your ways, and you will make amends

or we will wipe this place clean

  • In your opinion then, in order to be a true fan you have love something an artist produces unquestioningly? Im not a Rolling Stones fan because I dont think they've put out a good album in 25 years? Im not a real Nails fan because I don't adore the alst two albums even though I've never missed a concert and listen to everything up to and including With Teeth incessantly?I find your logic a bit baffling. While I enjoy the more recent work,I think its foolish to say its on par with previous works.

  • Yea I agree. It's called growing and capturing emotion. Who wants to make the same shit all the time? lol.... Ive probably produced like 200 songs and I just capture whatever emotion Im feeling and try to grow musically... Trent has ALWAYS done this... grown through ... anger .. rage .. etc etc and molded into something unexplainable.... fucking amazing artist... thats a TRUE artist.... always growing .... OH LETS FIND A GENRE... STAY HERE AND SELL.. fuck that .... he makes TRUE art ... amazing

  • I NEED YOUR DISCIPLINE!:)

  • He's using it to control a MIDI piano. None of the sounds are coming from the "expensive toy."

  • Looks something like in the movie 'Close Encounters Of Third Kind'.

  • Just gotta love that monome! Can't wait till I get mine!

  • where do you actually get one of those?

  • thats Cortini messing with a very more complex/expensive version of an EMX electribe synth/drum sequencer "i think" Love that Buchla I think thats how its spelled analog module synthesizer in there you see with all the wires..lovely sounds, just compare keyboard sounds from The Fragility Tour to the With Teeth Tour. not the players just the sounds in the keyboard sounds in the songs.

  • now how the fuck is he doing that?

  • 30:5? By the sounds of it, that was the time signatutre?

  • 30 ghosts songs were recorded. 5 (or 6) to go.

at least i think it's that way.

  • I'm going to stick with my time signature idea.

  • 30/5 isnt a time signature.lol

  • Not one that's used that often, but why can't it be? That's like saying 10,538,288 isn't a number.

  • because u cant have 5th notes

  • WRONG

  • example please

  • I don't have a specific example, but it's not impossible. Instead of dividing a measure by 4, you divide by 5. Also see the wikipedia page on time signatures, because i suck at explaining.

  • Trent Reznor = Albert Einstein of the 21st Century

  • HI H.A.L.

  • Trent Reznor > Tetris.

  • LOL

  • FUCK YHEA

  • I want one of those :(

  • The star trek lookin' thingy, The Lemur, is$800

  • Jazzmutant Lemur = $1,999USD/1,531EUR

  • can it make the piano sound like a bowed synth sound?? An artist can make music with anything, but when the given the choice to play this would not be the first thing to cross my mind. What is it some kind of un-sampler with midi??

  • acoustic pianos can't be made into synth sounds directly seeing as how they'd have to be pre-recorded, then processed through a synth device.

  • That's quite a mindfuck.

  • This is so interesting, but it looks too complex.

  • ditto

  • Love the Monome so incredibly much. He's got the 40h and the 256 here, as well as the Lemur, and Cortini also has a 128 in his studio! So jealous! I have a Monome 64, and I'm definitely going to be picking up a 256 next time they're available. I'll likely get a Lemur in the future, too, when I can afford it, haha.

  • haha jack! i want a 256 so baaaad

  • The most complicated game of tetris ever..

  • I thought so!

    That's gotta be like, level 100 =O

  • I still want one of those!

  • What actually is that thing?

  • Looks like a gazillon dollars sequencer, one of those but in greater scale was used in the 08 lights in the sky tour on stage mounted in a plastic wall screen of some sort.. I'm not an expert in the matter but it works like the Reactable. Another amazing device. You simply select the slots in the "Tempo" you want to be activated and then when the time line hit's the selected slot an action occurs, in this case a piano key is activated

  • awesome!. i know daft punk also use lemurs too

  • and also stephan bodzin :)

  • robot rock is a awesome song

  • ooooook. that looks like fun.

  • The thing about Monome it's actually physical, many people who make music on laptops seem to want to have some more material level to their hobby, additional touchscreen don't really provide that. Personally I would choose the Momome, not the Lemur but that's just me

  • Now I want a lemur more than ever lol but they're so expensive! NIN is this best.

  • it's just too much man, :p nice gear

  • LOL!

Seriously though, that's pretty cool. Wouldn't mind a Monome, they look pretty versatile. & I've heard that they feel pretty good, too.

  • lol

  • lol The piano looks lonely.

  • Well isn't that Nancarrownian!

  • his names Alessandro Cortini. he's NIN's keyboard guy. It's a Monome and a Lemur. Now STFU.

  • I hope you aren't saying the person in the video is Trent.

  • wtf is THAT?!?!?!? ok, i've seen some strange looking instruments (just go to a legendary pink dot show & you'll know what i mean!!)... can i have one for x-mas?!?!

  • looks like theyve rigged a midi sequencer into the player function of a player piano. very very good idea.

  • It's called a monome. It looks pretty cool like some wired up set of Lights Out puzzle games. It will set you back about $500 to $1400 depending on which one you order from the Monome website. Of course, Nintendo has this video game simulation called Korg DS-10 which is like a simulator of the Korg MS-10 with some modern features like the monome which may set you back about $40.

  • its a Lemur

  • the one on top is the lemur , the one on bottom is the monome

  • ha, i saw a demo on the lemur awhile back. to see it being used in something you guys are doing makes me look at it a second and third time. it would be great to note in future songs when this is used in the creative process.

  • And you have something better to show?

  • Actually that wasn't a song.

  • Don't be silly, this is just experimentation. NIN has proved to be one of the most innovative bands. Just watch one of their shows and you will see.

  • trent, you're a cool as hell, and real as fuck....

thankyou for being true to your people.

  • cool

  • It's the new musical trend!

  • Alessandro is controlling the Matrix^^

  • keyboards + some kind of tetris... he's obviously playing

  • A day in the life of NIN

  • why the lemur and the monome are so expensive...

  • I don't know. Moog synths (some of the ones NIN uses in their records) are really expensive too (actually, all their equipment). Maybe the Lemur and the Monome are expensive because of the technology and cause they're for pro musicians. Remember this guys are pros.

  • actually , that was a retoric question xD .. my thoughts are more directed to think that those things are expensive because they are made for specific uses ... so its easy to charge so many bucks on something that is not produced by any other brand

  • Right, I was drooling over a Tenori-On at a shop the other day, I could really get into one of those machines, but then who'll play my guitar, guitar synths and so on... I've come to the conclusion that the Monomes and Tenori-Ons of the world are for musicians' girlfriends to play, so that they don't go out and find another non-muso boyfriend while we're programming these things :)

  • I'm not going to read through these comments..

the equipment looks fucking awesome, the sounds remind me of being inside of a casino.

    club extraction looks it up!

  • que te haces el brian eno puto blanco

  • brian eno era blanco pendejo

  • puto hijo de puta chupa la garcha

  • que acaso eso es lo mejor ke puedes contestar

    que patetico eres
