I adore the GG. To those who criticize her appointment as being media, Adrienne Clark was too. I think it is wonderful that Canada recognizes the contribution and changing face of Canada. As Head of State I think she represents all Canadian, in a non-partisan way. She is a credit to us all!

i dont think canada should have a president, cuz if we had one we'd just be seen as america's little brother or puppet even more than now. the monarchy just gives canada a uniqueness on the international front. and as for electing a head of state, well we do elect the prime minister and he controls the country more than the monarch so it works out, even if the queen does have some reserve powers that could be used without the prime ministers approval.

The Governor General is the head of state while the prime minister is the head of government.

Unlike the US where the head of government and head of state are merged.

She is basically the "consort" of the Queen who basically signs the acts of parliament into law that is passed by parliament. She has no real power but merely symbolic of the separation of duties by the head of state and the head of the government.

In theory she can "refuse" to enact a bill (as this has happened with the Australian governor general) into law so in theory - the parliament can summit a vote of no Confidence OR have the Queen summon her governor general obviously with the recommendations of the Prime Minister (who has the real power) and have the Queen reelect a new governor general (with the prime minister's recommendations) to the position.

True Kiara, also worth mentioning, all Commonwealth countries are ones that were one british colonies and gained independence. The traditions remained however, to symbolize our ties to Britain. Every commonwealth country is the same as Canada... Australia, New Zealand, The Bahamas, ect. All those countries also have governor generals.
