  • My God the TONE! Why doesn't he play that axe any more?

  • @tsuei05 Because he now endorses, and has signature models, with Suhr.

  • is there a studio version of this song?

  • @BrantFortunate Sure, it's on his album 'Erotic Cakes'

  • ive just spent half an hour watching the end solo over and over again, saying out loud while im sat at my desk on my own "wow that is just perfect"

  • Feck! He's just too good, man. That last solo - I'm speechless or typeless or what have you.

    Awesome stuff!

  • sweet

  • Is he actually playing on a PRS there? Kind of hard to see, but based on the head-stock especially, I would say he is!

  • @WimpyPotato yeah, he used to play them before he changed to suhr. as you can see the video is from '04.

  • dude it looks like he was seriously possessed at 2:47 and then hit some notes and stuff out of this world. like real alien stuff. lol. then after was like "like that?"

  • 5:39 - 5:50. Wonderful bending and note choice, esp with that mixolydian chord progression

  • I've seen this at least a thousand times.. and I still can't get over how amazing the solo at the end is. Definitely the best solo he's played with this song. What a beast.

  • Steve Vai, Yingwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Michale Angelo Batio, Slash, Joe Satrianni and Zack Wylde disliked this awesome video

  • i really dont know what to say...i am a guitar student and right now i feel like crap U_U

  • Is Guthrie some "Test tube splice" or bastard love child of Alan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, John Mclaughlin and Frank Gambali ...but only the best bits genetically engineered to be better !!! ...how can someone be that good ?

  • this is kind of similar to Fives!!! :-)

  • it`s weird that this guy isn´t more famous. I´ve shown this to other kids at my age(12 years), but they really don´t understand it. I think this music is way to advanced and awesome for the mainstream to understand. I told my dad to check out his song Waves, and even HE didn´t understand the main melody! He´s a professional musician fulltime and knows more music theory than any people I know about!

It´s cool for us though, to be one of the few to love and understand this kinda music.

  • @IverDaBest obviously he doesn't know more than Guthrie Govan :D Although it isn't just knowing the theory, it is also about the creative mind.

  • i will implant a guthrie govan playlist inside my ear so i can always hear his music

  • try that on my old Les Paul Jr.

  • 2:45 And Guthrie saw the devil tempting him and Guthrie said,"Though sucketh' on this Satan"

    *plays humane notes*

  • did guthrie have reall hardcore sex after thinking and making this song or what?

  • Such a brilliant guitar player. It's ridiculous how good he is. And then you hear him actually play music, and you just die.

  • gets a little behind the beat during the tapping part but who cares. still my favorite fucking guitarist.

  • I'm clearly not doing it right, but when I 'try' and play the tapping part, I only use 4 fingers, the 7 fingers just aren't important!

  • @kiaranjay Me too, the middle and 3rd finger from the right hand and the third and index finger from the left hand. Still, very nice impressionistic piece of art by Mr Govan!

  • @jareds1007 go f*ck urself

  • @IverDaBest ....i don't think that one comment was meant for this video...the one about moron....so......a well deserved go f#$ myself

  • @jareds1007 then go watch hiromi don't hate on Govan. Dumb ass.

  • @rckr68 dude! i was watching like 5 videos at once, i commented on the wrong one. i just got an idea! i can remove it!

  • it's sad that this video of sevens sounds like shit and is the most popular...

  • What appeals about this guy is that in a very short time he will bend and tap and change phrasings and his timng, throwing in all kinds of styles just to colour the mix. For me at least, he does this so well its awe inspiring. There maybe better specialists out there, better speed, better whatever, but this guy brings the ingredients together in the mix soo well overall he might just be the best of them all overall.

  • FUCKIN RIP NASTY !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He is the most amazing

  • Pillate a este man @Andres Lopez

  • What Prs model is that guitar?

  • It takes a lot of skill to be able to play in an odd time signature for that long, and to be able to write a song this good in the time signature. Much respect to Guthrie Govan.

  • @acosebede you could venture into Mclaughlin, De Lucia, and Lagrene.... Nothing wrong with Howe Govan and lane tho, some of the finest players ever.

  • @acosebede lol thats pretty much the exact same order i followed

  • it will take me forever to learn this unbelievable music.

  • just found out he teaches at BIMM. OMFG! If BIMM didnt already sound awesome its just got infinitely better!!!

  • Anyone who click dislike was going immediately to click like but creamed themselves and misclicked.

  • The phrasing from 5:00 onwards is amazingly gorgeous.

  • I will seriously suck anyone's dick who will tab out the tapping part.

  • @nickheck ROTFL!!! XD

  • Is this in 7/8? And it's the seventh track of the album? 7s all around :) God, such a brilliant player, he needs more recognition. @deadhead3691 Yes, I also creamed at the tapping.

  • @Arachnidius It's also 7 finger tapping I believe. Not 8.

  • i will seriously suck anyone's dick who can tab out the tapping for me.

  • @nickheck Get ready to suck cock you faggot

  • @SocalDNM

still waiting for a tab rofl.

  • @nickheck Done, it's in your inbox....where do you live? LOL ....don't you guys have something better to do?

  • Allan Holdsworth is Buddha of guitar and Guthrie Govan is Jezus of guitar. A watch him play, and tears are falling from my eyes, this is absolutely fantastic. Last time that someone was making me so stunned (beside Holsworth) was master Shawn Lane.

  • Dude he gives lessons- where can I sign up?

  • @BlikeNave

He also authored some tuition books.

Creative Guitar Volume 1: Cutting Edge Techniques

    and

Creative Guitar Volume 2: Advanced Techniques

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Damn.. that tapping is so flawless.. with the use of his fingers..!!!

  • at 2:33 he(the guy in red) came back from the time warp induced by that 8 finger tapping, though side effects are gonna appear, such as: Govanish Type C (the subject falls in love with Guthrie Govan inmediately).

lol, just messing with the john petrucci style comments.

  • So amazing.

  • is it me.. or is my brain slowly melting by watching this..

    guthrie is the man!

  • men. Have anyone the sevens tab, but, COMPLETE!!!!

  • such a shame probley on ly 30 people there when Guthire is clearly WORLD CLASS, there should be 10,000 ppl there to witness this master

  • That's why Guthrie is the man ;)

  • Wow this is amasdn/sdn.zdcvb.... sorry I was trying to wipe the brains off my keyboard because he just blew my mind lol

  • Is the best

  • @hendrixboogie patrickkkk murrrrr!

  • How is that guy just sitting there!!

Not even bobbing his head a bit.... I wouldve been getting down to this

Guthrie is a master! SOOOO beautiful!!

    <3<3<3

  • @mattimus5460 I think Guthries playing melted his brain. :) It's really funny - he doesn't move one bit!?!

  • He's a good as anybody on the planet right now.

It's impossible to say any one of the great shredders is best, IMO.

But there is a top group of world-ruling Godlike talents, and Govan is right there in the middle of 'em, at least!

  • Guthrie Govan is freaking awesome!!!

That melodic tapping is beautiful, I love this song, is mind blowing.

I think the same as @Blade686 you're not alone pal.

  • Something in Guthrie's playing takes over my brain and gives my hands a command to throw my guitar out of the window.

  • 1:10 to 1:38 is one of the best things ive ever heard

  • I can't comment, my brain melted....

  • @TFBCountryBoy i thought your brain melted?

  • seams easy when he plays ....

I thing he is not 100 % human.

  • Never mind beating around the bush.. This man is a guitar GOD!!!!!!

  • we're not worthy! we're not worthy!

  • Guthrie Govan & the Ghosts

  • This is an amazing piece. The thing I dislike about a lot of tapping is that it's so often thrown in purely to show off and sounds out of place, but in this song it's perfectly suited. I love the section from 4:58 onwards, especially how he does that tapping trill at 5:04.

  • @shorberm In his Creative Guitar 2 book.. he talks about that idea. He demonstrates as a harmonica-type trill. Genius.

  • does anyone know what he is doing around 2:56 to get that sound?

  • he's lightly resting his right pinky on the 12th fret, doing a harmonic, while hammering away using the left hand

  • man....this guy is sick!! :p

  • OMG !! Such skill & creativity. Words cannot express his brilliance. I feel privileged that I m alive now to hear & see his music. He will undoubtedly be remembered in the future as one of the greatest guitarists in modern history. Bravo Guthrie!!

  • enorme

  • IMO this is the best version of the ending solo of this song :D

  • 2:45 what is it a ghost?

  • figure out the code yourself..........but if you bar a fret with you picking hand and hammer/pull off notes with the fret hand you can get some really sweet harmonics...................first guitarist i've ever seen to do this........and guthrie govan deserves the credit for it.,,,

  • i suppose the frozen guy on the front was a huge Guthrie fan so they gave him sleeping pills so that he woud let Guthrie play..

  • a clinic, indeed

  • What I would give to see him live. The man in front is zoned out, indifferent, seems as if hed rather be anywhere else. Bow in the presence of Greatness!!!!

  • Amazing!

But what the hell happens at 2:46?

  • This guy is definately ripping fusion a new asshole . I remember he was in the spotlight colum in a guitar mag he said he was influenced by Zappa . H e shows that kind of writing ability really really good . i'd like to buy a CD of this

  • i bet you say that about all the boys

  • It does. But that's how you recognize a great guitarist.

  • a very hairy glans

  • Is that guy in the red real? Or is he just a dummie? He's not moving !

  • Listening to hismusic it becomes so apparent hes such an 'out the box' thinker

  • 2:55

    Mind blown. Holy shit.

  • its called sevens because of the time signiture the tapping is played in. you count to seven, then its a new bar.

  • the whole piece is in 7/4

  • lol, exactly! I don't understand why it's so hard for people to figure that out...and guess what time signature fives is in??? 5/4?? omg wow! Lol, anyway GG is probably my favorite guitarist at the moment. Gotta love him.

  • This is the best Sevens version because the end solo is AMAZING!

  • the 8 finger tapping makes me cream.

  • I think it's 7 finger tapping, if you look he holds the pick in his 1 finger... so he can't use it to play.

  • whoops, that is what I meant to say.

  • hey its deadhead no one except me knows who you are on this video lol

  • I do =)

  • lol that makes 2 of us then

  • me too ;)

  • @deadhead6391 7 ;)

  • This man is a beast!

  • Have you seen hairdresser's prices lately?

  • Actually thumbs up for that comment, showing that it's cheaper and cooler to ignore the hairdressers and grow a rock and roll hairstyle like Govans'

  • Been a while since i watched this video, forgot how amazing the outro solo is, full of passion and taste! 5s

  • 3:18 yummmmy :)

  • imagine how good he's gonna be with a couple more years under his belt. He's not an old guy, he's got many more years of guitar ahead of him that we can look forward to XD

  • Oh yeah he's going to grow towards a Greg Howe or Frank Gambale like carreer for sure! I can't wait to see him in several combo's with Dennis Chambers or Steve Smith or Victor Wooten :) The guy can play with the very best of the best!

  • the odd thing is he has alot of years under his belt allready nearly 31aprox

  • whoops hes been playing since 3 not six ok then he has had 34 years :S of experience

  • totally he's going to grow in a few years to be better than Britney spears and even justin timberlake

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    dude that was PERFECT

  • by better, do you mean 'bigger'? he's already better than both, not that they're comparible

  • lol. 2:47 hes like WTF?!

  • Man guthrie's good huh? I wanna see this guy live, he deserves a Major Project with the High Rollers

  • If Guthrie got any better he is with no doubt the incarnation of Jesus.

  • didnt know jesus could shred.

  • this is better than shred

  • If this guy got any better the world would implode.

  • This was half a decade ago too so he did get better, which is probably why the world is going to shit! Damn you Guthrie, not again!

  • if this guy got any better then evolution took another step and he's a from a new species.

  • THE MONSTER!

  • I basically tried what you described and it sorta works, it's just weird trying to barre it just right, without the fundamental being played

  • you can cheat and use a scrunchie on the neck while doing those harmonics. just barre over the 12 fret while keeping the index finger anchored on the 5th fret and hammering on the 7th, 8th, and 9th frets of all the strings. hope that helps! :D

  • guthrie is way too good

  • the part a 1:13 is beautyful.

    fast but still so soulful.

  • Anyone know what chords he is using when he comes in on the intro? I got the low octave but I can't quite make out what chords he uses afterwards and it's killing me!

  • el guitarrista definitivo se acabo la espera

  • so is this guy touring or what? I'd pay to see him.

  • He's doing a clinic tour of the US east coast with Suhr Guitars in July. Check out his forum and you can get more info.

  • I'm still not 100% sure what he's doing at 2:54 - 3:03

  • he is doing harmonics, he explain it in his book..

  • excellent ....embraces & much music of your friend rafael of the Brazil

  • I don't see how you could really compare the sounds of clips done on cheap camcorders to judge how guitars sound.

  • Very true. And yet.. it sounds quite amazing.

  • PRS isn't even in the same league of the Suhrs. That being said, Guthrie will sound great through a Squier because tone is ultimately in the hands.

To PRS: You snooze, you lose. LOL

  • obviously tone is subjective-i prefer the tone on these GG PRS vids to his Suhrs because it is more "guitary" LOL!! What i mean is it sounds like the summation of tone so far-or its closer to "traditional" tone or something like that. Every Suhr vid he seems to have come up with a new tone noones ever done before!

  • Guthrie has said that he much prefers the Suhrs and that his playing and sound improved a great deal after switching to Suhrs from the PRS. He had more to gain by going with PRS for publicity/promotion sake as PRS is a much larger company than Suhr. He went with the better guitars.

  • *sigh* That's just too good, hehe.

  • does anyone know what prs model hes got there?

  • yeh a Custom 24.

  • looks like a custom 24

  • 1:13-1:39 is just amazing.

  • ah this is pre "suhr" days, great song.

  • Do you mean Steve Vai? Cause in that case, I believe you, I didnt know that at all, and I guess you are right :)

  • alien ?

    good

  • hes a machine....

  • he is great !!!!

  • just once in my life i want to meet him...it's like Mekka for the muslims lol

  • mwa ha ha ha i have met him...

he is the single most humble person ever lol, he's like the opposite of steve vai...

disappointingly when i met him i didnt really have a clue just how good he was, because, although it as just after a show at the LGS '08, i had never previously heard of him...

  • i hate you :P

but i can imagine his simple character, he has no conspicuous outfit like vai on his shows...................................and he doesn't use ventilators to make his hair blow, omg! -.-

he's Mr. Humble Jesus Genious! ^^

  • *genius

  • why you dissin vai man? Hes a great (weird however) musician. He has his own thing, and his fans dig it. I think thats pretty immature to bring steve into this outta nowhere.

  • The reason he brought Vai in, is because Vai worships himself :) Not to the same degree as Malmsteen, but he still do it - they all do... Except Guthrie Govan :D

  • As far as Vai goes, the superficial facade of self worship has a deeper meaning.

He feels he's communing with god when he plays guitar. He feels it, he breaths it and it is something that most people can't see. It's truly a higher plane of existence beyond anything you may realize.

Don't slight him for it. And honestly, if you were that good, wouldn't you be proud of yourself?

  • Ofcourse I would :) Even though I might not go as far as worshipping myself, I will be proud when I get that good :D

  • except paul gilbert and andy timmons also

  • You're right, its wrong to say "They all are", because some are rather humble - Including Paul, who is probably my favourite shred artist along with Guthrie :D He gave me his pick back when he had a concert here in Norway (Paul, that is) :))

  • and Paul Gilbert, hes humble

  • which means only one thing...he's a cyborg genius

  • It was in another world from the beginning but in Heaven from 4:58 onwards...
