AS brilliant of a musician/ Juliard-trained guitarist John is, he never did anything about his nasally, breathy, raspy sound of his voice. I'm wondering if he spent anytime with a voice coach that could have helped him improve his voice tone quality?? Kinda like Dave matthews. Problem with both artists - they have this head-cold quality voice tones that hasn't gotten any better as the years have gone on.

But he keeps coming up with original, jazz-influenced chord structure songs that rock!

He didn't have voice control back then, so to get certain tones he forced them out (such as doing the weird tounge thing) this is something he has told in several interviews, it was first after the release of Continuum he actually started getting the hang of controlling his voice and learning to sing from the stomarch - this is also the reason for why his voice isn't so smoky today
